Extractions: NFL Insider SAN DIEGO (Jan. 23, 2003) For the first 15 seasons of his 18-year NFL career, the only way Lomas Brown was going to the Super Bowl was as a spectator. However, for the second time in three years, the veteran Pro Bowl tackle is in the NFL championship game. Brown was a starting offensive tackle in Super Bowl XXXV for the New York Giants, who lost to the Baltimore Ravens 34-7. He signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before this season, and will do his best to help them win a ring as a reserve in Super Bowl XXXVII. Press conference video

FAQ 2002 Previews - Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2001 REVIEW -The Tony Dungy era in Tampa ended quickly after the Eagles disposed of the Bucs in the playoffs. When the coaching merry-go-round finally stopped, the Buccaneers had landed Jon Gruden to take over the helm. Gruden brings a workaholic ethic and fiery personality to the team. And to make his job that much easier, the Bucs are no longer saddled with playing the Bears and Packers twice a season. Instead, they inhabit the NFC South with the Saints, Panthers and Falcons. Anyone who doesn't think that is a major plus hasn't been watching the NFL much. OFFENSE -Brad Johnson will be the starter. Rob Johnson has been too inconsistent to wrestle the job away from him.. Warrick Dunn is gone, but the Bucs reloaded and landed Michael Pittman. If Pittman can stay healthy, he can be more of an every down back for the Bucs. Mike Alstott returns, but he may not have as much pressure on him if Pittman holds up. The Bucs wasted little time in snatching up some wideouts to complement Keyshawn Johnson. They signed Keenan McCardell and Joe Jurevicius and drafted Marquise Walker and Aaron Lockett. Gruden will find exactly what suits his offense from this group. The Bucs also worked some on their offensive line. They added Kerry Jenkins, Lomas Brown and Roman Oben. Kenyatta Walker looks to have one tackle spot nailed down, which leaves Oben and Brown to battle for the other tackle position. Jeff Christy, Jenkins and Casey Coleman man the interior of the line.
Extractions: UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER January 26, 2003 T ampa Bay backup quarterback Rob Johnson may not get much playing time, but that doesn't stop the Disney folks from signing him to an agreement just in case fate makes him the Super Bowl MVP. Backup quarterbacks have to be prepared in case of an injury to the starter, and so do advertisers who produce commercials. Johnson made two starts and played in six games in the regular season. He's 57-of-88 for 536 yards and one touchdown, with two interceptions and a quarterback rating of 75.8. Johnson's problem is he was sacked 19 times in his limited playing time. Starter Brad Johnson was sacked 21 times in 451 pass attempts. Rob Johnson's value as an NFL quarterback has fluctuated since his days as a promising backup behind Mark Brunell in Jacksonville (1995-97), his acrimonious years with Doug Flutie competing for playing time in Buffalo (1998-2000) and his post-Flutie season as the Bills' starter (2001). In a couple of the offseasons, the USC alum who keeps a home in Laguna Beach had hoped to land in San Diego.
