Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER On offensive: Ex-Giant Lomas Brown says Sean Payton didn't alter plans after Super Bowl run. SAN DIEGO - Lomas Brown, the former Giants left tackle, wasn't surprised back in October when he heard Jim Fassel took over the play-calling from offensive coordinator Sean Payton. He just thinks Fassel did it one year too late. Brown, now a reserve tackle with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said Payton's problems dated back to the beginning of the 2001 season when the Giants came out with the same offense that got them to the Super Bowl the year before. By then, other teams had adjusted to Payton's scheme, Brown said, and it was clear opposing defenses knew what the Giants were going to run. "We kept trying to tell coach that some games, especially when we played Philly last year, they would be calling out where we were going," Brown said. "And we would tell coach, 'Coach, it's almost like they know where we're going.' You can't put any part of your team in a situation like that. We tried to tell him that. "I guess Coach Fassel got the message this year."

When the New York Giants brought seven-time Pro Bowl player Lomas Brown aboard last March, his ability to pummel opposing defensive linemen in the trenches was only part of the reason they were so quietly excited. In Brown, 6-feet-4, 280 pounds and one of the best and most durable offensive tackles in the NFL for 15 years, the Giants were getting not only a man of the highest character but someone who had comprehensive knowledge of his profession.

Extractions: Original publication: "I saw this kid about 6-3, 250, and he's carrying a trombone," Alex Bromir recalled yesterday. Bromir was the principal at Miami Springs High nearly a quarter century back, when a freshman named Lomas Brown was fixing to get to the Super Bowl for the pleasure of playing in the halftime show. "Son, you play that instrument?" Bromir asked Brown. "Yes, sir. I'm gonna be in the band," Brown told Bromir. "You ever play any sports?" the principal asked. "A little basketball, but I was always over the weight limit for football," the freshman answered. "Why don't you come with me?" the principal said. They had no idea they were taking their first steps down the Super Bowl XXXV tunnel, the trombone about to be traded in for a helmet and pads. "He just grabbed my arms and took me back to the auditorium," Brown said. "He signed me up for varsity sports and didn't tell me what they were. This was the principal, and that was my first day of school. I wasn't going to argue with the principal." But oh did he ever want to argue. It wasn't until the day's last class that Brown realized his worst fear had been confirmed, a fear that had nothing to do with an ill-timed zit.

Extractions: This is a research effort I took on a few years ago and continue to delve back into from time-to-time. While looking through this list of players, keep in mind that this is completely an inexact science. I have found that locating uniform numbers for some of the pre-World War II players is a real challenge - particularly the numbers for players on the many now-defunct franchises of the 1920s and 30s. Note that this list also includes players from the old All American Football Conference (AAFC), the original AFL and the AFL of the 1960s. Also note that many players have a star by their name, this indicates players who wore more than one jersey number. In cases of players who did wear more than one number, I have generally tried to associate that player with the number he wore for the longest tenure or the number he wore during his greatest success. During the early days of professional football, uniform numbers meant very little to players and spectators. In fact, during the 1920s, very few teams even assigned jersey numbers. Those teams who did use numbers paid very little attention to them. Players, during that time, often switched numbers from year-to-year and even game-to-game. I have, for example, no less than five or six numbers listed for many early greats like Ernie Nevers, Ray Flaherty, Mike Michalske and Cal Hubbard - only to name a few. If you notice the obvious omission of some of these plyers, it is probably due to the fact that I haven't been able to accurately determine a number to list him with.
