Schneider Wins Biletnikoff Award; Olson Top QB In State from Piedmont head coach Pat George informed Schneider that he had been picked bynational football League Hall of Fame receiver fred biletnikoff to receive http://eastbaysports.com/localnews/ppost/010109/cathrall/schneider.html
Extractions: This Week's Editorial parents speak local news features ... about January 9, 2001 All in all, it's been quite a year for Piedmont High School's football team, starting - and perhaps ending - with its dynamic duo, wide receiver Pete Schneider and quarterback Drew Olson. Schneider, a senior, was just named as the winner of the 2000 Fred Biletnikoff Award as the top wide receiver in the Bay Area. And Olson, nearly at the same time, learned he had been picked by Cal-Hi Sports as the top quarterback in the state among small schools. All of which makes Highlander coach Pat George sit back and smile. Schneider, who was selected Dec. 19 by Alameda Newspaper Group for the All-East Bay 1st Team and its Offensive Player of the Year, and a week later was named to the San Francisco Examiner's 2nd Team for the Bay Area, received some more good news last week. A call from Piedmont head coach Pat George informed Schneider that he had been picked by national Football League Hall of Fame receiver Fred Biletnikoff to receive the 2000 Biletnikoff Award - as the top high school wide receiver in the Bay Area. Elevating Schneider to new heights, the award also is presented each year to the top collegiate receiver and the top professional receiver.

ESPN.com - Page2 - Part 6: Al Davis, The Awkward Genius It created a bond between players and owner that existed nowhere else in football. Ofall the Raiders, the most profligate offender was fred biletnikoff. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/toomay/021007.html
Extractions: Editor's Note: In last week's episode , Pat Toomay experienced first-hand the blood feud between the Silver and Black and the hated Pittsburgh Steelers, and tried to come to grips with the near-fatal accident of his friend and former roommate, Duane Benson. Moving to the Raiders and playing for John Madden was the career boost Pat Toomay needed. Duane's accident never became a topic of conversation around the locker room. I know I wasn't comfortable enough with my own anxiety to talk about it with anyone. Nor was Al Davis, evidently, because the people he might have mentioned it to older players, coaches, trusted administrators never breathed a word about it. In retrospect, this wasn't surprising. Generally, clubs tended to keep disturbing news at a distance, if at all possible. A team's psyche was fragile enough without the added burden of a tragedy like this one. Bad news could break concentration, destroy momentum. It could wreak havoc with an otherwise successful season. While one can debate the virtues of ignoring bad news, in football it's the rule. You play through adversity. You rise above it. And that's what we did.

They were amazing hands, ball-attracting magnets that pulled in any pass within the time zone of his pattern. If Biletnikoff could touch a ball, he could catch it a fact he proved over and over during a 14-year AFL/NFL journey that started in Oakland and ended in the Hall of Fame. Biletnikoff wasn't fast and his narrow-shouldered, 190-pound frame should by all rights have disintegrated with the heavy pounding it absorbed from 1965 to '78, when Biletnikoff turned sideline and over-the-middle pass catching into an art form. He couldn't beat the faster defensive backs physically, but he could outwork and outthink them. Biletnikoff's precise, perfectly timed, sleight-of-foot patterns became legendary, as did his ability to make the difficult catch at the crucial point of a game.
