Extractions: WEEK 12 FOOTBALL NOTES EMU DROPS DECISION IN SEASON FINALE AT CENTRAL FLORIDA ORLANDO, FLA.The Eastern Michigan University football team closed out its 1997 season with a 38-10 non-conference loss here Saturday (Nov. 15). The Eagles finished the 1997 campaign with a disappointing 4-7 overall record and a 3-5 Mid-American Conference West Division record. Playing before 39,433 fans in 71 degree weather here Saturday, the pregame expectation of a shootout between two potent offenses did not materialize as the defenses dominated most of the action. After a scoreless first quarter, Central Florida got on the board with 13:17 left in the second quarter on a 7-yard pass. Eastern came right back to score when junior placekicker Justin Ventura (Claremont, California-Claremont) booted a 24-yard field goal. After UCF added a 28-yard field goal the Eagles had a chance to tie the game in the last stage of the first half when quarterback Charlie Batch (Homestead, Pennsylvania-Steel Valley) found tight end Joe Carroll (Chicago, Illinois-Brother Rice) with a pass to the UCF one-yard line with just seconds remaining. Eastern did not have a time-out available and were not able to stop the clock in time for the potential tying score. That breakdown cost the Eagles as UCF came out in the second half and went up 17-3 on its first offensive drive.

Steelers Steelers stir the quarterback pot Show willingness to sign Batch to 1-year contract as a backup Saturday, June 15, 2002 By Ed Bouchette, Post-Gazette Sports Writer Absent a clear opportunity to land a starting job elsewhere in the NFL this late in the year, quarterback Charlie Batch wants to return home, play a backup role for one year with the Steelers and then become a free agent in March. Charlie Batch - "This is where I'd like to be." (Lake Fong, Post-Gazette) Stan Savran Steelers' Rooney good to his word And since the Steelers seem more than happy to have him do that, it might be a matter of days before they have a 27-year-old quarterback who has been Detroit's starter the past four seasons. "If I had my preference, then this is where I'd like to be," Batch said yesterday from the Steelers' offices on the South Side, a deep pass down Route 837 from his native Homestead.
Extractions: there.By DANIEL LEACH Echo Columnist Charlie Batch's name will be called on this weekend during the NFL's annual college draft. No one knows exactly when, but the way that he has handled his last five months since the end of EMU's football season, it figures that his name will be called sooner than later. Batch has spent six years at Eastern and has virtually broken every record possible for a quarterback to break, including the Mid-American Conference passing record for one season when he threw for 3,280 yards in 1997. Ever since his last game in an Eastern uniform against Central Florida November 15, 1997, Batch has spent every waking moment preparing for the NFL draft. "I started playing when I was seven years old, it was the thing for kids to do" Batch said about his younger days playing ball. Batch grew up in the very football competitive town of Homestead, Pa., which is a mere five mintes away from an even richer football city in Pittsburgh played football and basketball all through high school . At first Batch had to convince his mother to let him play football at age seven "My mother was always behind me, she is the most influential person in my life," Batch said. "At first she was worried that I wasn't big enough to play football, I had to win her over." Batch had struggles growing up other than convincing his mother to let him play football. His father, Charlie Batch Sr., left his family when Charlie was very young. So he grew up with his mother, Lynn Settles. Batch' s sister Danyl was killed in drive-by shooting in 1996. Batch also has a 17-year-old brother whom he adores . "Vernon plays QB just like me and whenever I'm around I help him with his drills," Batch said. Vernon is thinking of going to the University of Pittsburgh. The rest as they say is history and a bright one in that. Batch was the heart of an Eastern Michigan program that was anything but spectacular. Batch has made the best of every situation he has been in. Coming out of Steel Valley High School in 1992, Batch had aspirations of playing at Pittsburgh. "I wanted to be close to home and play in a good program," he said. The road block for Batch was that he didn't pass his SAT's and could not get admitted to Pittsburgh. After looking at various junior colleges, Batch found Eastern. "They had a scholarship left and wanted me to play for them right away," Batch said about Eastern pursuing him. The Eahgles admitted Batch despite the test score and made him a Prop 48, which meant he couldn't participate in any team activities his freshman year. Batch blossomed in Eastern's pro-style system under then-coach Ron Cooper. In his first two seasons at EMU he threw for more than 3,700 yards in 19 games. He then suffered a knee injury which shortened his '96 campaign. "It was tough to be out, but you can never give up," he said And never give up he did, Batch came storming back in 1997 to throw for a school and MAC record 3,280 yards and 23 touchdowns. Batch is a very passionate individual and takes life for what it is and knows he is something special. "I'll be happy wherever I go in the draft, I just want a shot to play," he said. There are many teams that are interested in Batch. Some analysts are putting him as high as late in the first round. "There are a lot of teams that need a quarterback, I want to be in someone's plans," Batch said about the possibility of being drafted by a team that would need him to fill in right away and have an immediate impact. Batch said the Lions, Dolphins, and defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Bronco's all have shown interest in him, but he wouldn't mind playing for a team like Green Bay, wouldn't we all. The Broncos' scenario seems like the best to me. You have John (Superman) Elway who is about to retire and Bubby (CFL here I come) Brister as the perennial backup. If Batch was to come in as the No. 3 quarterback he would battle Brister for the starting job if Elway was to get hurt, and then for sure once he retired. Of course this is all based on crazy star-gazing predictions, but why not make them anyway. What I do know is that Charlie Batch is one of the nicest people I have ever met and when you are a journalist it can be tough to say that about an athlete. He is all about class and honesty and has worked his tail offto get to the position he is in now. Wherever he goes he will make a difference. An example of what Charlie is all about is, when asked what the first thing he will buy once he signs the dotted line on his check, "A car for my mother and to make sure she is financially set for life," Batch said. Charlie if you are reading, this pinch yourself, because this is not a dream. You will be drafted shortly, the first player in 11 years to be drafted from Eastern. I can only imagine both the anxiety and excitement a player goes through in the tumultuous time before draft day. What is truly amazing is the sheer power Batch has had on Eastern. Although the Eagles only won four games last season, it could have been none if Batch wasn't here. Many times people don't realize how much of an impact a player can have. Batch's has been nothing short of incredible. So as Batch sits at home with his supporting family by his side on Saturday, waiting to see where the nest stage of his already spectacular life will start off, I hope he will feel peace within himself. That he has come so far and under such great odds to become one of the best in the land. The Detroit Lions do play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thanksgiving this year Charlie, hopefully I will see you
