Extractions: Posted: Wednesday October 06, 1999 03:30 PM By Ivan Maisel Close your eyes and envision a college football dream team on which John Elway could hand off to Earl Campbell or Barry Sanders or rifle a pass to Ozzie Newsome or Randy Moss. A team on which Doug Atkins and Billy Ray Smith would knock offensive tackles into the quarterback while coach Tom Osborne watched intently from the sideline. A team for the ages, yes but a two-touchdown underdog to the squad you are about to meet. SI molded its Team of the Century by employing the methods current coaches use. Not only did we adhere to the 85-scholarship limit, but we also selected more offensive players than defensive ones. We took transfers ( Doc Blanchard, from North Carolina to Army; George Connor, Holy Cross to Notre Dame; and O.J. Simpson, City College of San Francisco to USC). We even suspended a player, having caught George Gipp in the poolroom more often than the classroom. Because passing styles have changed over the course of the century, we threw tight ends, flankers and wide receivers into a single pool and made our selections without regard to exactly what receiver's position they played. We took quarterbacks who had winning records and a flair for the unexpected: Tommie Frazier overcame career-threatening blood clots in his right leg to win two national championships;

Extractions: April 3, 2002 O ne of the most revered members of the NFL Hall of Fame has fallen on hard times,without even falling at all. Doug Atkins of Knoxville brokehis left hip three months ago in Canton, Ohio. He lost about 40 pounds and has endured numerous complications that include an irregular heartbeat, 103-degree fever and serious infection. "I'm finally getting better," he said."If things had continued like those first two months, I would have been long gone by now. It got to the point where I looked at one of my doctors and said, 'I think I am dying. What are you going to do?' " Atkins, who was listed as being 6-foot-8 during his legendary 17-year pro career (1953-69), suffered the injury while trying to get up from a couch at the house of former teammate Tommy James . They had been in Canton for a three-hour autograph session, and Atkins had surgery on New Year's Eve.

Extractions: February 9, 2003 Dear AskChuck@knews.com: Do you think the University of Tennessee has the guts to hire someone like Bill Schmidt? He appears to be extremely qualified for today's needs in a major university program. He is aggressive, imaginative and very talented regarding sports promotion, generation of money and support in many areas. Schmidt (who was featured in a recent article by Gary Lundy) also appears to have a great "entrepreneurial" attitude and skills. The changes in the last decade at UT have been tremendous and it will change even more in the next decade. As great as Doug Dickey has been - and he has been the best - I am just not sure he could perform as well in today's environment for college athletics. Wouldn't it be refreshing to see UT take the leading-edge role in major college athletics as we start into this new century? DAVE WILLIAMS It could be well into the spring before this process is resolved.
