Jessie Armstead, king of the world, leans back in his chair and grins for the cameras, and it is difficult to tell whether the light bounces brighter off his diamonds or off his smile. And why not? Extractions: MSNBC contributor The Giants don't lionize quarterbacks and receivers. They hunt them. For nearly 50 years, the king of beasts in New York football lore hasn't been the guy who skillfully passed or caught the ball but rather the guy who relentlessly pursued it. From Sam Huff and the Fearsome Foursome, to Lawrence Taylor and the Big Blue Wrecking Crew, to today's group of less-heralded but equally fierce stalkers, this is a basic truth: The Giants and their fans know the word championship starts with the letter 'D.' No wonder, then, that it was in the stands at venerable Yankee Stadium, during the Fabulous Fifties, that Giants fans first began to chant "dee-fense! dee-fense!" The chant has echoed through the years and remains the signature roar at Giants Stadium today, a tribute to latest group of defensive lions. It is known as "Giants Football." The style is blue-collar. The offense is gray: conservative and efficient. The defense is red: reckless and destructive. This year's team, which earned the franchise's third trip to a Super Bowl by beating the Vikings 41-0 on Sunday in the Meadowlands, upholds the Giants' tradition.
Extractions: ASHBURN, Va. This should be a week of bitter reflection for Washington Redskins linebacker Jessie Armstead. The football team he accused of a cowardly act when it released him without the courtesy of a face-to-face meeting last offseason is next on the Redskins schedule. But try as he might, Armstead cant feel animosity for the New York Giants. In fact, the more Armstead talks, the more you understand why practically every professional athlete wants to play in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. Im probably the person that New York treated the best, the fans, the media and the players, Armstead said. Its not like youre dealing with a guy who got sent away from a team that the fans or the players didnt like him. The fans loved me I had so many wonderful years in New York that its hard to for me to knock them for anything. This will be something that I never thought I could do. My veins bled red and blue. When youre a Giant, you always say youre a Giant for life. After nine seasons, five of which Armstead played at Pro Bowl-form, the Giants fired him. For the first time in six seasons, he had finished with less than 100 tackles. Although Armstead didnt miss a game for the sixth year in a row, nagging injuries caused the Giants to believe that his best days were behind him.

Accorsi's Not Young the fate of the New York Giants rests in the hands of talented professional footballplayers like Kerry Collins, Michael Strahan, jessie armstead, and Tiki http://www.bigblueinteractive.com/thoughts/bbr02.htm
Extractions: by Greg Efthimiou Throughout the course of the regular season and playoffs, the fate of the New York Giants rests in the hands of talented professional football players like Kerry Collins, Michael Strahan, Jessie Armstead, and Tiki Barber. How the Giants fare in the off-season can be gauged largely on the performance of another key franchise player: General Manager Ernie Accorsi. For more than half of each year, the focus turns to the Giants GM as he negotiates and renegotiates multi-million dollar contracts, evaluates college talent, and fortifies the team's roster with seasoned veterans and promising rookies. Accorsi sleeps little and worries a lot, all in the name of assembling the best 53 men he can find players who are capable of delivering championship football to fans of the New York Giants. Accorsi's ascension to the top front-office post was the result of a smooth handoff from former Giants GM George Young, who orchestrated the construction of Superbowl teams during the 1986 and 1990 seasons. While Accorsi was groomed by Young to pilot the franchise into the 21st century, this does not mean that he was a stranger to the world of football administration. A native of Hershey, Pa., Accorsi steadily moved up the ranks of NFL front offices after serving time as a newspaper sportswriter and apprentice under commissioner Pete Rozelle. After beginning in the public relations department, Accorsi's career with his childhood favorite Baltimore Colts culminated in his rise to general manager in 1983. Accorsi also worked as GM for Art Modell's Cleveland Browns, and even had a brief stint in the Baltimore Orioles' front office before joining the Giants organization as Young's assistant in 1994.
