Chapters: Natural History Museums in Wisconsin, Milwaukee Public Museum, Uw-madison Geology Museum, Barlow Planetarium, Thomas A. Greene Memorial Museum, Camp Five Museum, Discovery World, Logan Museum of Anthropology, Dinosaur Discovery Museum, Tommy Bartlett Exploratory. Excerpt: The Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM) is a natural and human history museum located in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. The museum was chartered in 1882 and opened to the public in 1884; it is a not-for-profit organization operated by the Milwaukee Public Museum, Inc. MPM has three floors of exhibits and the first IMAX Theater in Wisconsin. Admission is free to residents of Milwaukee County on Mondays and to Milwaukee County jurors at all times. The current museum president is Daniel Finley. The museum hosts about one million visitors each year. MPM was among a half-a-dozen major American museums that were established in the late nineteenth century. Although it was officially chartered in 1882, its existence reaches back to 1851, to the founding of the German-English Academy in Milwaukee. The Academy's principal, Peter Engelmann encouraged student field trips, many of which collected various specimensorganic, geological and archaeological in naturewhich were kept at the Academy. Later, alumni and others donated various specimens of historical and ethnological interest to the collection. By 1857, interest in the Academy's collection had grown to such an extent that Englemann organized a natural history society to manage and expand the collection. Eventually, the collection, which had come to be informally called "The Museum", grew to exceed the Academy's ability to accommodate it. August Stirn, a city alderman and member of the national history society, obtained legislation ... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4369916 ... Read more

Excerpt:Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It is one of the oldest and largest planetariums in the United States having welcomed over 7 million visitors by its 60th anniversary in 2009. As a unit of the university, Morehead receives about one-third of its funding through state sources, one-third through ticket and gift sales, and one-third through gifts and grants. First opened in 1949, the planetarium was used to train Gemini and Apollo program astronauts in celestial navigation. Until the late 1990s, it contained one of the largest working Copernican orreries in the world. The facility was donated to the university by alumnus John Motley Morehead III who invested over $3 million in the facility. Morehead Planetarium opened on May 10, 1949 after seventeen months of construction. The first planetarium in the South, it was only the sixth to be built in the United States. Designed by the same architects who planned the Jefferson Memorial, the cost of its construction, more than $23,000,000 in todays dollars, made it the most expensive building ever built in North Carolina at the time. Morehead Planetarium was officially dedicated during a ceremony held on May 10, 1949. The sundial in front of Morehead Planetarium.Since Zeiss, the German firm that produced planetarium projectors, had lost most of its factories during World War II, there were very few projectors available at the time. Morehead had to travel to Sweden, where he had previously served as American ambassador, to purchase a Zeiss Model II to serve as the heart of North Carolinas new planetarium. While Let There Be Light was the Planetarium's first show, it would be followed later in 1949 by ano... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=496494 ... Read more

Excerpt: Butler University is a private liberal arts university in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It was founded by abolitionist and attorney Ovid Butler in 1855. It serves over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students in 60 degree programs through five colleges: Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Jordan College of Fine Arts. Butler's tuition, room and board total $41,500 annually, and over two-thirds of students receive some form of need-based aid. On November 1, 1855, Butler was opened and was originally known as the North Western Christian University. The original location of the school was 13th Street and College Avenue on the near-northside of Indianapolis. In 1875, the university moved to a 25-acre (10 ha) campus in Irvington. It was there that the school was renamed Butler University "in recognition of Ovid Butler's inspirational vision, determined leadership, and financial support." In 1922, Butler purchased Fairview Park, and in 1928, moved its campus to the current Fairview location. The campus consists of 16 major buildings covering an area of 290 acres (120 ha). The University master plan for 2006-2014 calls for the construction of the new Fairbanks (journalism) Building, the new Student (housing) Apartments, the new Health and Recreation Complex (HRC), renovations to the Butler Bowl (football), an addition to the Atherton (student) Union, a renovated business building (Robertson Hall), a renovated concert hall (Lilly Hall), an addition between the Lilly and Clowes Memorial Hall, an addition to the Pharmacy Building, and renovations of Gallahue (science) Hall, the Ho...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=778928 ... Excerpt: The Gray Fossil Site is a Late Miocene-epoch assemblage of fossils located near the unincorporated town of Gray in Washington County, Northeast Tennessee, and dates from 7 to 4.5 million years BCE). The Gray Fossil Site was discovered by geologists in May 2000. They were investigating unusual clay deposits turned up during the course of a Tennessee Department of Transportation highway project to widen State Route 75 south of its intersection with Interstate 26. State Route 75 was realigned to protect the find by order of Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist, and a museum and research center at the dig operated by East Tennessee State University opened in August 2007. The current dig at the Gray Fossil Site was determined to have been the location of a semi-circular sinkhole that once harbored a pond environment over a long period of time and is now yielding the remains of the ancient plants and animals that lived, watered, and died within the then watery sinkhole. Among the many vertebrate fossils found at the Gray Fossil Site are the those of frogs, turtles and tapirs and recovered fossil records represent finds from approximately one percent of the total area of the Gray Fossil Site that has been explored --- and future fossil recovery from the entire site is projected to continue on for one hundred years. The Gray Fossil Site is also the world's largest tapir fossil find and is yielding new and rare discoveries such as the most complete skeleton of Teleoceras (an ancient rhinoceros) yet found in eastern North America, the tooth of a new species of red...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3599394 ... Historic Franklin Street is considered the center of social life for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as the town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and it is home to numerous coffee shops, restaurants, museums, music stores and bars. The street in downtown Chapel Hill is notable for its festivities, nightlife, and culture. The stretch of college-oriented businesses continues west into neighboring Carrboro. West Franklin begins at the intersection of South Merrit Mill Road where Carrboro's East Main Street ends. West Franklin moves east-northeast through the town's historic business district to Columbia Street, where it becomes East Franklin. East Franklin continues the straight path through the business district, passing campus and then curving north "down the hill" through some of Chapel Hill's historic neighborhoods. Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Yorkshire Planetarium was a planetarium in the grounds of Harewood House, near Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, from May 2007 until October 2008. The Yorkshire Planetarium organisation has announced that it is laying plans for a permanent base in Bradford and until that is developed it will be touring various locations during International Year of Astronomy 2009. The planetarium at Harewood consisted of three linked geodesic domes of which one was dedicated to the planetarium itself while the others were used as the main entrance with an 8m climbing frame and a theatre to provide further information about space. The main attraction was the planetarium dome. There were guided tours of the sky by a live presenter in the dark dome. Stars and planets were projected onto the inside of the dome by a Carl Zeiss Skymaster star projector. This enabled visitors to gaze into the sky at the stars without the hindrance of light pollution and cloud cover while they lay on comfortable mats or deck chairs. ... Read more

Excerpt:Tynan AbbeyTynan Abbey, County Armagh, Northern Ireland was the home of the Stronge family until 1981. It was a large neo-gothic-romantic country house built circa 1750 (later renovated circa 1815) and situated outside the village of Tynan. It was bombed in 1981 and its ruin finally demolished in 1998, having stood for 249 years. The original house on this site was called Fairview and was the home of the Manson family, it was acquired by the Stronges through the marriage of Dr. John Stronge and Elinor Manson. At this time Fairview was described by Thomas Ashe as a "very pretty house, well timbered and regularly built. It is two stories high. There are good chambers and garrets above staires, a hansome parlour, a common Hall, a Kitchen Sellars and their Convenient Offices a Good Stable Barne and Cow house a Good Garden and Orchard". The library, in which the last of the Stronges were killed, was believed to have dated to this original house. The building of Tynan Abbey itself (as Fairview would become) took place under the ownership of the Stronges. By 1816 Mrs Calvert, Sir James Stronge, 1st Baronet's mother-in-law, described the house, which was under construction, as "very ugly...I don't think I shall ever like the house...I have a comfortable enough room...all the other rooms are unfinished and even without windows...the staircase without banisters and all about unfinished". By 1822 Mrs Calvert thought Tynan Abbey "very pretty and the place very nice, but somewhat exposed". By 1838 George Petrie of the Ordnance Survey desc...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5209139 ...
