Product Description
In spite of the Challenger and Columbia disasters, the US Space Shuttle, which entered service in 1981, remains the most successful spacecraft ever developed. Conceived and designed as a reusable spacecraft to provide cheap access to low Earth orbit, and to supersede expendable launch vehicles, serving as the National Space Transportation System, it now coexists with a new range of commercial rockets. David Harland’s definitive work on the Space Shuttle explains the scientific contribution the Space Shuttle has made to the international space programme, detailing missions to Mir, Hubble and more recently its role in the assembly of the International Space Station. This substantial revision to existing chapters and extension of ‘The Space Shuttle’, following the loss of Columbia, will include a comprehensive account of the run-up to resumption of operations and conclude with a chapter beyond the Shuttle, looking at possible future concepts for a partly or totally reusable space vehicle which are being considered to replace the Shuttle. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Readable details about today's space program
Pick up any of the Praxis-Springer books and you'll think it's a textbook. And that is partly a correct assumption. This book is different in its narrative, however. It's not just dry facts, but an interesting collection of accomplishments.
David M. Harland's Story of the Space Shuttle is very well written and anybody who has the slightest passing interest in America's space program will enjoy it.
It's really broken down into three or four sections. The first 200 pages or so deals with a chronological highlight of every shuttle mission. You could stop reading there and have enjoyed a book on the shuttle program and learned quite a bit about what the shuttle's science and engineering accomplishments were (which are myriad and too many to list even though many people would have you believe the shuttle never did much of anything).
The next 200 pages deals with detailed discussions about spacewalks, science performed on the shuttle and its contributions to the Russian Mir Space Station and the International Space Station.
At the end, there is list of every shuttle flight that includes: orbiter information, cargo manifest, crew list, launch dates and major achievements for each flight.
This is a great, interesting work that I would advise anybody over the age of 10 to read. ... Read more

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Astronomy," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Astronomy in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Astronomy when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Astronomy, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Vacuum science and technology are currently of central importance to much scientific research and industrial activity. Vacuum science is rooted in physics, and finds its application in a wide range of activities ranging from experimental physics and materials science through to semiconductor microelectronics. This text sets out the fundamental principles and practice at a level suitable for an undergraduate physicist. It then presents a selection of applications of vacuum technology in scientific research and industrial production, along with an examination of the whys and wherefores of each. It should help the understanding and analysis of the behaviour of several modern vacuum systems, and should enable an appreciation of their use in the workplace and the design of some simple systems for specific laboratory purposes. ... Product Description

Recent surveys have provided new and updated information into public insights of the nascent space tourism industry. Erik Seedhouse uniquely explores in detail the cutting-edge technologies, spacecraft capabilities, launch vehicles and the training that will define this commercial enterprise and also provides a manual for future suborbital and orbital private space explorers. This overview of the space tourism market is based upon choices the spaceflight participant must make, such as choice of agency, mode and spaceport. A detailed explanation is given of the medical requirements for spaceflight participants, with special reference to potential waiver criteria. Over half of the book is a comprehensive astronaut training/instructional manual that addresses each of the 15 subjects required for suborbital and orbital flight.

Following an Introduction examining the commercial potential for space tourism, Section 1 covers Suborbital Flight. Chapter 1 opens with a description and analysis of the significance of SpaceShipOne. Chapter 2 gives the Suborbital frontrunner profiles, mission architectures and technical aspects from launch to landing while the following chapter details the training and medical requirements for space tourists. Section 2 covers the same aspects for Orbital Flight, including a civilian astronaut training manual, enabling technologies, capabilities and personnel. A description is given of the anticipated on-orbit phases that will introduce the potential spaceflight participant or reader to the capsule, rendezvous, medical support, mission events and de-orbit phase. Section 3 gives a detailed assessment of the future of space tourism based on current technologies, commercial applications, military use and Lunar and Mars missions. Countries without space programs are also included.

Erik Seedhouse provides a much needed, well-rounded understanding of what promises to be the most dynamic, multi-faceted and exciting industry in the world. He shows how seemingly innocuous players are disproving long held beliefs about what can be achieved in space despite the inherent complexities, and why this industry may soon define the new norm in space travel.

5-0 out of 5 stars The must-have guide for space explorers
For those considering signing up for a ride into space, this is the book you must buy. The author, Erik Seedhouse, sports impressive credentials: not only does he have a Ph.D. and a post-doc, he was an astronaut training consultant to Bigelow Aerospace, and was a world-class professional athlete (a 3-time world champion no less). You have to wonder why the Canadian Space Agency didn't select him as an astronaut the last time round?

Given his background, it's not surprising much of the book examines human factors issues associated with spaceflight, but the book also provides a valuable insight into the background and history of space tourism, and profiles some of the leading developers and operators of commercial orbital and suborbital flights. The end of the book examines the future of space tourism in the form of journeys to Mars and other solar system destinations.

The real treat however, is a detailed description of the training prospective spaceflight participants will undergo, and why. 'Tourists' goes beyond describing the training process: it includes detailed training schedules for suborbital and orbital spaceflights. For suborbital flights, a five-day training syllabus is described that includes classroom instruction, centrifuge and hyperbaric training, and a zero-g aircraft flight, concluding on the fifth day with the actual suborbital spaceflight. The orbital training syllabus lasts five weeks, and includes additional classroom work, simulator runs, and survival training.

For those particularly curious about space tourism, 'Tourists in Space: A Practical Guide' is a great investment and an entertaining read.

Product Description
Launch activities performed by private entities deal with acomplex legal environment. The Space Treaties provide a generalliability framework. Launch participants are subject to regulatory orinstitutional control, and to domestic liability laws. Specificcontractual practice has developed due to insurance limitations, theinter-participants' waivers of liability and claims. This book synthesizes information on the norms of play, to allow thegrasp of their relative weight and interactions in the assessment ofliability risk for launch activities. It reveals a legal frameworkpresently lacking sufficient predictability for an efficient liabilityrisk management:- the waivers of liability sufferweaknesses as do all such clauses, and lack uniformity andreliability; and- the Space Treaties contain ambiguous termspreventing predictable determination of the States responsible forauthorizing and supervising launch activities and for damagecompensation, and do not reflect the liability of launch operators. This book offers suggestions of new approaches for:- harmonizing waivers of liability to improve their consistency, validity and flow-down; and- improving the Space Treaties fortheir implementation to non-governmental launch activities. In the launch community, the need for lawmaking is less compellingthan in fields such as aviation. Nevertheless, adjustments to thepresent framework are proposed through model clauses and aninternational instrument, for further thinking and contribution bythose sharing the opinion that creative lawmaking is needed now toprepare for tomorrow's endeavors. ... Product Description
This book explores the issues brought about by the reliance in recent decades on scientists to provide new information on health and environmental risks to policymakers in assisting them to make regulatory decisions. A new role has been created for scientists as a result of the increased demand for advisors to the government. As a result, the transition from basic research to research-on-demand has not always been smooth. On the basis of first-hand experience, the authors analyze and provide keys to improving the flow of scientific information into the policymaking arena through the selection of the "right kind of people" to manage and translate the research. The book provides a list of criteria for selecting such managers and analysts. Co-published with Abt Books. ... Read more

Product Description

This is the first political history to emerge since the end of the Cold War that analyzes the development and interactions of the U.S. and Soviet/Russian space programs throughout the Space Age. Taking advantage of American and Russian sources previously unavailable, the author shows how U.S. and Soviet space policies intertwined with other, broader policy interests—interests that coalesced both in a frenzied “space race” and in surprisingly persistent attempts at cooperation. This ambivalent interaction did not end with the demise of the USSR. Von Bencke traces history through to the present, exploring the most recent opportunities that the two great space rivals have found to work together—and the new challenges they must yet surmount.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book to Understand Asteroid Impact Consequences
The Bobrowsky edited book is an excellent must-read book for anyone conducting serious intellectual inquiry into a potential asteroid impact with the Earth. The articles are a wonderful collection on a very serious topic. The reader gains multiple insights on the varied interdisciplinary issues related to asteroids. This is a fine contribution to the current state of knowledge. The book would make for an excellent university text in either astronomy or public policy agenda-setting and formulation. I highly recommend the investment in this book if you have serious interest in the history of asteroid/comet impacts as well as what humans may do to mitigate such a disaster in the future. I believe this book to be the best I have read on the topic of asteroids impacts. I am pleased to have added it to my personal library. ... Read more

Product Description
Rather than examining only the civil or military side of the US space program, as have many books in the past, Space, the Dormant Frontier takes a unique look at the space program as a whole. Part of the book's treatise is that the two communities must stop ignoring each other if the US space program is to move forward beyond being a science project, jobs program, or political football. How the program got into its current, semi-desperate state is also examined, as history has given space a legacy once glorious, now an albatross. The authors include information and analysis on the military and civil space programs, challenge the perspective of the Washington Beltway analyst with vested interests in the status quo, and make policy recommendations based on realism, rather than idealism. ... The people of Israel, its learned men and its scientific knowledge.- Nature and poetry. - General view of the physical world as given in the Book of Job. - Criticism of the sources.
I. It did not fall to the lot of the Hebrew people to have the glory of creating the beginnings of the sciences, or even to raise to a high level of perfection the exercise of the fine arts: both these achievements belong to the great and imperishable honours of the Greeks. The Jews were not a nation of conquerors; they had little or no knowledge of profound political problems, or of the administrative science which has brought such distinction to the name of Rome. Their natural gifts, as well as the course of events, carried them to a different mission of no smaller importance-that of purifying the religious sentiment and of preparing the way for monotheism. Of this way they marked the first clear traces. In the laborious accomplishment of this great task Israel lived, suffered, and completely

A fantastic and well written book. Prof. Schiaparelli provides clairvoyant writing and excellent research. This book is filled with meaty treats - a must have for any student of Archaeoastronomy.

My only disagreements with the book were some of his literal interpretations of biblical characters and some of his inferences maybe be outdated - to be expected for a book written 101 years ago.
