Canzone. He dwells on his Condition through Love. ALL the whole world is living without war, And yet I cannot find out any peace. O God ! that this should be! O God ! what does the earth sustain me for ? My life seems made for other lives' ill-ease: All men look strange to me; Nor are the wood-flowers now As once, when up above The happy birds in love Made such sweet verses, going from bough to bough. And if I come where other gentlemenBear arms, or say of love some joyful thing, -- Then is my grief most sore, And all my soul turns round upon me then : Folk also gaze upon me, whispering, Because I am not what I was before.14 FOLCACHIERO DE' FOLCACHIERI.I know not what I am.I know how wearisomeMy life is now become, And that the days I pass seem all the same. I think that I shall die; yea, death begins; Though 'tis no sot down sickness that I have, Nor are my pains set down. But to wear raiment seems a burden sinceThis came, nor ever any food I crave ;Not any cure is known To me, nor unto whomI might commend my case:This evil therefore stays Still where it is, and hope can find no room. I know that it must certainly be Love: No other Lord, being thus set over me, Had judged me to this curse; With such high hand he rules, sitting above,That of myself he takes two parts in fee, ... ... Product Description
A cofounder of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) has become well known to many through the widespread reproduction of his work on posters, cards, and prints.

This sumptuous survey of his colorful, romantic art includes major works from all periods of his life in every media including watercolors from the 1850s; paintings of the female figure from 1859 on; representations of artists and their models; studies of Elizabeth Siddall, his wife; late paintings on themes from Dante and the Arthurian legends; the monumental decorative projects at Llandaff Cathedral and at the Oxford Union; and his contributions to the decorative arts (book bindings and illustrations, stained glass, furniture, and picture frames).

Published to accompany an exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Van Gogh Museum, the book complements recent scholarship and will stimulate further research on Rossetti. The book and exhibition mark a landmark in Rossetti studies, providing an unprecedented opportunity to view the entire range of his achievement. The contributors include Edwin Becker, exhibition curator at the Van Gogh Museum; Liz Prettejohn, Professor of Art History at Plymouth University; and Julian Treuherz of the National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside. 330 illustrations, 130 in color. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Muddy and tiny reproductions ruin this book
I was very annoyed when I got this book and after looking through it, see that the images are about greeting card sized, and poorly reproduced. I have better Rossetti work as desktop wallpaper, honestly. This book also is very repetitive. Plug the name 'Rossetti' into Google or any search engine of your choice. Hm? You see what I mean. It's the same girl over and over and over and-

I should be more careful with Pre-Raphaelites. They tended to depict their girlfriends to the exclusion of everything else. This book, sadly is mostly images of the same woman/girl/guy? to the point it gets boring. And for what it's worth, I love the samples of Rossetti's work I have from other books.

Just be warned not to expect one of those nice coffee table books loaded with huge full page images. This sure isn't it. I'm not sure it's even a good representation of Rossetti's works. I like what I have for wallpaper, but those paintings weren't included here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rossetti
Gorgeous book, if you are a Rossettti fan BUY THIS! The book has the most detailed biography of Rossetti to be found and most of his paintings are there to be enjoyed in full color. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
Described by W.S. Blunt as 'the greatest of the all the great Victorian poems', this sequence of 103 sonnets was composed between 1847 and 1881, and finally published complete in Ballads and Sonnets just six months before Rossetti's death. These passionate celebrations of the ecstasy of love threatened by change and Fate inspired the Aesthetes and Decadents of the eighties and nineties, leading to Walter Pater's Mona Lisa and Oscar Wilde's Salome.BR > This new edition of Rossetti's poetic masterpiece is presented here with Introduction, Notes and definitive texts and date. All variants are given for each poem (some sonnets exist in as many as eight versions), and each sonnet is given a documented date of composition and first publication. The illustrations include some rarely-seen images, notably a self-portrait by Elizabeth Siddal, the poet's wife, in whose coffin he placed his original poems, only to exhume them eight years later. ROGER C. LEWIS is Emeritus Professor of English, Acadia University, Nova Scotia, Canada. ... Read more
