Product Description
Schroder House, built in 1924 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, is the first and perhaps the most famous structure designed by revered de Stijl architect Gerrit Rietveld. A pilgrimage site for architects and historians, this small townhouse is considered the first truly modern residence. Its revolutionary open-plan layout provided an alternative to confining small rooms, its strip windows broke down the barrier between inside and outside, and its primary color scheme and shifting wall planes were symbols of its rupture with tradition. This title on the building's history presents a wealth of new information, including new photographs showing details uncovered in the recent restoration, archival images from when the house was built, and floor plans of each level of the house. It also contains material from the extensive archive amassed by the client, as well as information provided by Bertus Mulder, Rietveld's assistant at the time the house was built. ... Read more

Product Description
From his first great design masterpiece, the Red-Blue Chair, to his final design for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Gerrit Rietveld created a significant body of work and left a remarkable legacy. His simple yet dynamic design style has greatly affected international furniture design and has made a significant contribution to the history of architecture. His unconventional approach and extraordinary furniture, hailed by Theo van Doesburg as 'the new sculpture', inspired many of his contemporaries just as it continues to inspire today's designers; he has he has been cited as a source of inspiration by designers ranging from Verner Panton to Konstantin Grcic. This detailed yet accessible monograph is structured chronologically and richly illustrated with photographs and sketches of Reitveld's furniture design and his twenty-odd architectural projects. Following Rietveld from his humble beginnings as a cabinet-maker to his final years as a world-renowned architect, this book will present both his lesser-known work and his most celebrated, such as "The Zigzag Chair" of 1934. One chapter focuses exclusively on the Schroder House of 1924, which is among the very few twentieth-century buildings to be accorded UNESCO World Heritage Monument status. Produced in collaboration with the Centraal Museum, which holds the world's largest collection of Rietveld's work, this book includes a number of never-before-published images of Rietveld's work and his life. Author Ida van Zijl, who is the Deputy Director of the Centraal Museum and who has organized a variety of exhibitions that have included Rietveld, gives a thorough, accessible account of Rietveld's life and his work. She also explores his significance in the wider context of avante-garde movements, such as his influence within De Stijl and Functionalism, and well as the lesser-known but equally interesting work he produced with an eye towards mass housing and industrial production. Designed by Wim Crowel, the best-known Dutch graphic designer, the book provides a rich mixture of beautiful images and a fascinating story. Most crucially, this book will give Rietveld the attention he has long deserved as a designer and architect, presenting a comprehensive coverage of his output and a full analysis of his achievements. ... Peter was born in Stockton-on-Tees in North-East England, and Alison was born in Sheffield , South Yorkshire . They met while studying architecture at Durham University and married in 1949. Together, they joined the architecture department of the London County Council before establishing their own partnership in 1950. Work They first came to prominence with Hunstanton School which used some of the language of high modernist Ludwig Mies van der Rohe but in a stripped back way, with rough finishes and deliberate lack of refinement. They are arguably among the leaders of the British school of New Brutalism . They were associated with Team X and its 1953 revolt against old Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM) philosophies of high modernism. Among their early contributions were streets in the sky in which traffic and pedestrian circulation were rigorously separated, a theme popular in the 1960s. They were members of the Independent Group participating in the 1953 Parallel of Life and Art exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and This Is Tomorrow in 1956. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Gerrit Rietveld (24 June 1888-26 June 1964) was a Dutch furniture designer and architect. One of the principal members of the Dutch artistic movement called De Stijl, Rietveld is famous for his Red and Blue Chair and for the Rietveld Schröder House, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rietveld was the son of a joiner and began work as an apprentice to his father. He afterwards set up in business as a cabinet-maker. Rietveld designed his famous Red and Blue Chair in 1917. In 1918, he started his own furniture factory, and changed the chair's colors after becoming influenced by the 'De Stijl' movement, of which he became a member in 1919, the same year in which he became an architect. He designed his first building, the Rietveld Schröder House, in 1924, in close collaboration with the owner Truus Schröder-Schräder. Built in Utrecht on the Prins Hendriklaan 50, the house has a conventional ground floor, but is radical on the top floor, lacking fixed walls but instead relying on sliding walls to create and ch...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Excerpt: Gerrit Rietveld Academie -Gerrit Rietveld AcademieThe institution for fine arts and design located in Amsterdam is founded in 1924 after a fusion of three older art academies. At first the newly formed institute was called Kunstnijverheidsschool, short for Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs. From 1939 to 1960 the institute was mainly under influence of the functionalism and political critic views of De Stijl and Bauhaus. This was because of the role that socialistic architect Mart Stam had on the institute as being the director of the institute. In the 1960s Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld designed a new, more functional building for the institute together with his colleagues Joan van Dillen and Johan van Tricht. Gerrit Rietveld died quite some years before the realisation of the building and to honour its builder the academy was renamed in 1968 from Kunstnijverheidsschool to Gerrit Rietveld Academie. In this period the influence of autonome art and individual expression on the academy grew which shaped its face and in contemporary times still is the face of the academy. From of 1993 the institute falls under the law of higher education and scientific research. The teaching goal of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie is to educate the individual personality of each student, to extend his/her potential into a versatile practice. The Rietveld Academie consists of two buildings: The main building was designed by Gerrit Rietveld between 1950 and 196...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14516061 ... Read more

Excerpt: Hofwijck (or Vitaulium in Latin) is a mansion built for 17th-century politician Constantijn Huygens. It is located in Voorburg on the Vliet canal from Den Haag to Leiden, and its formal address is 2 Westeinde, Voorburg, the Netherlands, but its location today is better known as the Voorburg railway station. After he became a widower, Huygens bought land on the Vliet in Voorburg with plans to build a summer home while the Vliet itself was still being dug in 1638. At the time it was quite fashionable to have a summer home on a river or canal, and old maps of Voorburg show Hofwijck as one of many. The building itself and the gardens (originally on both sides of the Vliet) were designed by Huygens himself in cooperation with the architect Jacob van Campen. The estate was to be "a harmonious piece of paradise on earth, with a garden in Gods image and likeness." Huygens was very much inspired by the works of classical Roman architect Vitruvius. Pieter Post was in charge of the actual building activities. The building was erected in unplastered brick and is in the Classicist style. It stands in the centre of a square swan pond. Hofwijck was inaugurated in 1642 in the company of friends and relatives. In the collection on display are various items from the Dutch Royal family that have to do with the work of either Constantijn or his son Christiaan. In the display room for Christiaan, various types of clockworks are shown, as well as some original clocks. F...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5023836 ... Read more
