5-0 out of 5 stars Hannibal-more a Saladin than an Alexander?
This short, well researched, easy to read book gives one a good grasp on Hannibal and what he is really all about. The Semitic Carthaginian empire of the Southern Med of the 250 BC era,is being gradually nibbled away by the city of Rome and her alliances. The mercantile shipping class of Carthage decide to challenge Rome by hiring a large mercenary army led by Hannibal,a Greco-Phoenician warlord. The stakes are the Mediterranean Sea lanes and its tributaries and all the fabulous wealth it entails.
A theme throughout the book is the domination of the Med by the Roman navy and her private interests. Although Carthage has a formiddable navy,it can't compete with Rome's seapower. One of the reasons for Hannibals' trip over the Alps is because he can't take the direct route across the Med to Italy's boot without great risk due to the Roman navy. Also Hannibal hopes to collect allies among dissaffected tribes hostile to Rome on the land route, however he can't collect enough.Rome absorbs 3 major losses including the 60,000 casualty loss at Cannae, with a field army still intact and slowly begins to attrit Hannibals army which sinks to defensive measures in the heel of Italy. The Romans can absorb losses and incompetent military commanders,Hannibal however can't afford even one loss.A loss could mean the end of Hannibal's shaky alliances.Hannibalselephants were never a factor and probably made for some good steaks over Roman and Cathaginian campfires.
So what is the significance of the entire event? For one Rome realizes that it must consume the southern Mediteranean economic interests or be consumed by Carthage. Carthage becomes a Roman province.Hannibal becomes the first in a long history of invasion of western Europe by arabic semitic peoples. The one eyed Hannibal appears more a Saladin than an Alexander. The semitic peoples and their ruling classes are temporarily setback by the Romans but will regroup for another crack or two(or three) at the European prize.
The Roman generals Fabius and Scipio the Younger(Africanus) are given adequate coverage as the 2 who finally figured out how to stop Hannibal. ... Read more

Excerpt: Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French pronunciation: ; February 25, 1841 December 3, 1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty, and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau". Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, Haute-Vienne, France, the child of a working class family. As a boy, he worked in a porcelain factory where his drawing talents led to him being chosen to paint designs on fine china. He also painted hangings for overseas missionaries and decorations on fans before he enrolled in art school. During those early years, he often visited the Louvre to study the French master painters. The Theater Box, 1874 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Courtauld Institute Galleries, LondonIn 1862 he began studying art under Charles Gleyre in Paris. There he met Alfred Sisley, Frédéric Bazille, and Claude Monet. At times during the 1860s, he did not have enough money to buy paint. Although Renoir first started exhibiting paintings at the Paris Salon in 1864, recognition did not come for another ten years, due, in part, to the turmoil of the Franco-Prussian War. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=24546 ...
