Product Description
1898. Drawings by Remington, the renowned Western artist, with notes and verses by Owen Wister and others. Wister writes in the Introduction: No artist until Remington has undertaken to draw so clearly the history of the people...He has pictured the red man as no one else...He has told his tragedy completely...Remington has recorded the white man who encountered him-recorded this man also in every stage from dignity to sordid squalor. Pioneers, trappers, cowboys, miners, prospectors, gamblers, bandits-the whole motley rout goes ineffaceably into Remington's pages. And, finally, he has not forgotten nature herself. The mystery of the untouched plains and the awe of the unscaled mountain heights have been set down by him not only truthfully, but with potent feeling and imagination. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars As close to the horse's mouth as you'll ever get
This book is a small treasure. Not only is the author well versed in his subject, but he writes extremely well, chooses his words carefully, and writes in the vernacular of his time on the western frontier. And where else can one read biographies of such illustrious frontier characters as Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Luke Short, Bill Tilghman, and Ben Thompson written by a man who actually knew them up-close and personal and who actually ate, rode, slept, worked, gambled, and in some cases fought beside them.Based on his intimate knowledge of these men, Masterson provides precise physical descriptions and thoughtful impressions of their strengths, weaknesses, and character traits. He also shares many stories about these men based on his personal experiences, his conversations with them, and the recollections of others who knew them well and some who fought along side them.

I did find the book wanting in one respect, however.Although, most of Masterson's essays are based on his close personal knowledge, there seem to be some instances in which he appears to be repeating stories that he may have heard elsewhere, which he may have picked up from other sources, or which may simply have been the prevailing stories told at the time the book was written (1907).Some of these appear to be a little bit stilted and a few are somewhat superficial and don't seem to be entirely accurate. This is particularly true of his discussion of the Earp brothers' troubles in Tombstone; the gunfight at the O.K. Corral; and that gunfight's aftermath -- all of which he seemed to gloss over; as well as the chapter on Buffalo Bill Cody.True, Masterson had been in Tombstone but, to the best of my knowledge, he wasn't there when any of these events took place. In any case, he clearly had only a cursory knowledge of and an inaccurate view of those happenings.Similarly, I got the impression that Masterson may have known of Cody's exploits but that he had no direct knowledge of them nor did he really know Cody all that well.

In any event, Bat Masterson has written a valuable little book.It is sad for America's western heritage that he didn't also write his memoirs. But this book is a treasure. So, despite its few flaws, it is a must read for anyone interested in western history or simply in any of the above mentioned frontiersmen.

His philosophy and humor intrigued many readers in his articles of European travels published in the 'Golden Eye,' 'Overland,' and the San Francisco Daily Press. This story is an amusing account of his experiences in California. The illustrator attended the Yale School of Fine Arts and is unsurpassed in his works on the West. ... Read more
