5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and engaging account of Rembrandt's life.
This hard to find book is written as an autobiography in the best storytelling tradition. Mr. Weiss must take certain liberties in assuming therole of Rembrandt but the result is a facinating and engaging account ofRembrandt's daily life. This book creates a real person instead of the dryhistorical artist of other scholarly works.Perhaps it could best bedescribed as a Michener version of Rembrandt's life. ... Product Description

Females are the focus of many significant works by Rembrandt, from mythological heroines to street vendors. Nonetheless, the female image has been an underappreciated aspect of Rembrandt studies. This book examines how Rembrandt's portrayals of women reflect his intense dialogue with pictorial tradition and the cultural climate of seventeenth-century Netherlands. In this intriguing study of Rembrandt's artistic development, Gilboa reveals the artist's uniquely individualized image of the feminine.

Product Description
On what began as a fine day, a bear named Rembrandt lost his hat.
As all of us do now and then, Rembrandt meets up with an unlucky day. He loses something special, something that belonged to him, something hard to replace. It is a frustrating predicament, especially as a bossy bird, a bored cat, and an outspoken rabbit decide to help. Too polite and accommodating to refuse, Rembrandt must find—little by little—a way to take care of things on his own.
With unique mixed-media illustrations, Mary Newell DePalma brings to life this world populated by quirky animals and stylish hats, and together art and text reveal the merits and rewards of patience and perseverance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes my son belly-laugh
My 3-1/2 year old son belly-laughs through over half the book.It is a very well written book that is wonderfully illustrated...and silly enough to create a ruckus at my house! It inspired an afternoon of trying to make some hats of our own.I think we'll be reading this book again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding the Perfect Hat.....
"On what began as a fine day, a bear named Rembrandt lost his hat.He had stopped in the park to watch a clown juggle eggs, and while he was watching, a gust of wind snagged the tip of his hat and carried it away, just like that..."A good day turned suddenly bad, and even with the help of a well-meaning bird, cat, and rabbit, poor Rembrandt can't find the right replacement for his much loved and prized possession.....Susan Blackaby and Mary Newell DePalma have authored a simple, little magical tale, full of endearing characters and hats of every shape, size, and color.Ms Blackaby's gentle text, with its humorous dialogue, poses the problem. But it's Ms DePalma's vibrant and engaging illustrations that really tell the story and steal the show, and little ones will enjoy all the marvelous, expressive details found in each picture. With its satisfying, happily-ever-after ending, Rembrandt's Hat is perfect for youngsters 4-8, and a sweet lesson in patience and perseverance that shouldn't be missed

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable Story
I bought 2 copies of this book and took one to my grandchildren in Virginia.6 yr. old Charlotte listened to me read it and on each page asked me which hat I liked best. Two weeks later SHE read it to ME, needing help with only a few words.....again we chose which had we liked best on each page.Suzie is a very talented writer with a wonderful sense of humor!Children (and grandmothers) will live this!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Search for the Right Hat, and So Much More
My younger daughter is now 11 years old, so the nightly bedtime stories that I read to her for years are mostly a thing of the past, but not completely.Sometimes I'll stumble upon a children's book that is especially noteworthy, both for the story content and the illustrations, and "Rembrandt's Hat" is definitely one of those.Rembrandt himself is a sweet and unassuming bear, with gentle eyes.Losing his hat, and struggling find the right replacement, is a simple predicament that we can all relate to.His quirky animal friends all offer sincere and humorously inadequte suggestions, until Rembrandt himself solves the dilemma.Blackaby's dialogue is smart, and DePalma's illustrations will have you chuckling. We especially got a kick out of the way DePalma included little fragments of words, maps and even Chinese kanji characters on every page, with no obvious rhyme or reason behind them."Rembrandt's Hat" is a delightful read for kids and parents alike. We give it an enthusiastic two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hat's Off to Susan Blackaby!
Rembrandt's Hat captures both young and mature readers. My 12 year old related Rembrandt's search for his comfortable favorite hat to his search for identity. My three year old just loved the hats - she's always losing her favorite things, so the topic tickled her.
I myself loved the book (occasionally bolting from my comfy chair, yelling "cramp!") for Blackaby's witty prose.Blackaby's gentle sentences convey a world of hidden meanings.
I recommend this book for all ages.Rembrandt's Hat is a classic to keep on your shelf for many coming generations. ... Read more

Product Description
Rembrandt is revered as one of the most talented and prolific artists the world has ever known, and not without reason. His work was in high demand in Amsterdam during his lifetime, and has continued to enthral viewers ever since. The artist's early Baroque style through to his more introspective later paintings demonstrate his incredible skill in manipulating light and mood, while his striking etchings and engravings convey the energy and spontaneity of a sketch. From portraits to biblical scenes, landscapes to self-portraits, Rembrandt was diverse in his subjects and themes. Here, both his paintings and his engravings are brought together in a highly informative and desirable box set, allowing the reader to compare and contrast the artist's work in an abundance of beautiful images. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rembrandt's Art and Life
this is a great addition to a study for children on artists.Rembrandt's story is told at an upper grade school level.

The other fantastic feature is the beautiful color photos of his woks and two pull out pages of his etchings.

And the book also delves into analyzing Rembrand's works and explaining the imagery of the paintings.

At 90 pages, this book is a good introduction to an artist at a child's level and the photos and sketches in the book make it totally worth owning. ... Read more

Product Description

The 17th-century in the Netherlands is known as the Golden Age of Dutch art, and the art produced during that period is among the most popular in history. During this time, the Dutch Republic reached unprecedented power. Banking and the first truly global trade routes generated staggering levels of new wealth that, coupled with political and religious freedom, created a vibrant atmosphere in which the arts flourished. Celebrated portraitists Hals and Rembrandt painted haunting images of the country's new civic leaders and wealthy patrons. Genre painter Vermeer conjured unforgettable scenes of daily life, while Cuyp, de Witte, and Heda captured the Dutch countryside and its prosperous new cities and created intricate, richly symbolic still lifes. This sumptuous book features these and other Golden Age greats, along with a selection of fine Delft pottery, glassware, and silver that attests to the luxurious refinement of the era.

5-0 out of 5 stars AGreat Introduction to Dutch Golden Age Art
This book published by the Vancouver Art Gallery is the catalogue of an exhibit ofover 100 masterpieces of seventeenth century Dutch art from the Rijksmuseum. Although, the most famous of the museum's paintings includingRembrandt's "Night Watch" and "The Jewish Bride", Johannes Vermeer's "Milkmaid", and Frans Hals' "Merry Drinker" were not part of the exhibition, the book has reproductions of many other of the museum's masterpieces. With the exception of Gabriel Metsu, all the other great masters as well as many lesser known painters are represented. The works are divided into sections which deal with different subject matter: still lifes, city and marine scenes, landscapes, portraiture, religious images, and everyday genre scenes. Each full color page reproduction is accompanied by a short essay discussing the work and life of the artist which is beautifully written. Besides paintings, there are reproductions of drawings, prints, and decorative pieces including glass, silver, and pottery. However, there was oneproblem. When I looked at the list of works of the exhibit at the end of the book, three paintings {Rembrandt's " Beheading of John the Baptist",Adriean van Ostade's " Peasants in an Interior", and Fernindad Bol's "Portrait of a Man") were not illustrated. I would have liked to see the reproductions of those works. In spite of that flaw, I still lovedthe book and is a great introduction to the wide range of artists during this important period in art. ... Read more

Product Description

"Singularly interesting and stimulating. . . . A passionate and original work of scholarship."—Richard Wollheim, Times Literary Supplement

"With the publication [of Rembrandt's Enterprise], Svetlana Alpers has firmly established herself in the front ranks of art historians at work today. . . . The book is not a long one. Yet, there is more perceptive scholarship packed into its four chapters than is typically found in a whole shelf of the more common outpourings of academic writers. Rembrandt's Enterprise is less a book of archival discoveries than of fresh interpretation of the revered artist and his milieu. . . . Alpers makes us see how Rembrandt's complex and enormously popular art has embedded itself in our ways of thinking about who we are and how we live, even in the late 20th century."—Christopher Knight, Los Angeles Herald Examiner

5-0 out of 5 stars Before Koons and Hirst, there was Rembrandt...
This book is at the same time erudite and easy to read. It studies Rembrandt's relationship to his art (his peculiar touch, his brushstrokes), to the theater (its influence on the scenes depicted in his paintings), to his studio (the part of his assistants, his attitude towards them) and to the art market (he was famously said to love only three things, "freedom, art and money"). Well served by twelve coloured close-ups presented at the beginning of the book as well as by numerous black and white illustrations, the text is riveting, full of insightful information and analyses. I own many books on the Dutch master and this one is undoubtedly a favourite.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real answer for a false problem..
Are you tired of the fuss about real or false Rembrandts? Then read prof. Svetlana book. First of all, Rembrandt was allways interested in such confusion and gladly endorsed it. If he could get a fee for all false stuff under his name or painted by his pupils, that would be fine. So, dont worry, in the end, all the Rembrandts in one way or another are authentic... ... Product Description
This beautiful book presents highlights from the collection of Maida and George Abrams, arguably the finest private collection of Dutch seventeenth-century drawings in the world. The works range from studies by renowned masters-including Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Rembrandt van Rijn, Jacob van Ruisdael, Jacques de Gheyn II, Hendrick Goltzius, and Hendrick Avercamp-to drawings by lesser-known draftsmen whose contributions are essential to understanding the art of the period. The book features seven drawings by Rembrandt, a diverse group by his pupils, a comprehensive survey of Dutch landscape drawing, and figure studies and scenes of daily life by genre artists such as Willem Buytewech and Adriaen van Ostade. The works are explicated in William Robinson's detailed catalogue entries and in two essays: George Abrams reflects on recent acquisitions for his collection; and Martin Royalton-Kisch examines the Abrams' holdings within the tradition of specialized collections of Dutch drawings in England, France, and America. ...
