A Dynamic Book for Art Students and Teachers
I bought a copy of this book in '92. It is absolutely, the best book that an art student or teacher can purchase. I would, however, note that this is an advanced level book. If the reader understands the Elements of art and the Principles of organization, this book will open new doors in understanding of Pollock's abstraction as well as an understanding of most non-objective art. The in-depth study into Pollock's use of color, balance, movement, and rhythm goes beyond that of just descriptive words. The book includes easy to follow diagrams and step by step breakdowns of many of Pollock's paintings.

Again, remember, at times the book is very involved, but with a little background knowledge, this book can propel the aspiring abstractionist to new levels. ... Read more

Any one who has the faintest idea of who Jackson Pollock was in the art world should not pass up the oppertunity to read this book.The authors explore the scaffolding of the artists ideas by opening his sketch books to viewers and revealing his bare-bone sketching style. I was fortunate enough to see the Surrealism USA exhibit on tour in Phoenix in July.The collection was astounding.I found this book in the Phoenix Art Museum Store, however, $50 seemed like a lot to spend on a book while on a weekend vacation.I was thrilled to find it on Amazon for much less.The book is beautiful, the photographs are museum print quality and oversized, mostly one or two on each page. The creativity of the most celebrated artists of the modern period has been enriched and expanded by their work in the print medium. Exploiting the potential of such techniques as woodcut, lithography, etching and screenprint, as well as other processes, these artists have added immeasurably to their expressive vocabularies. Many have availed themselves of the expertise offered by master printers in professional workshops and have benefited from the fruits of such collaboration. They have found inspiration in traditional printed formats, such as portfolios and illustrated books, and have used them to explore thematic interests. As a result of these experiences, printmaking has exerted influence on their work in other mediums and has become integral to their creative thinking as a whole. Finally, the fact that prints are made in editions rather than as single impressions has enabled these artists to reach a much broader audience than would otherwise be possible.~This volume includes the work of artists from the late 19th century to the present and demonstrates the imaginative ways in which they used print techniques. The potential of the woodcut was explored by Paul Gauguin and Edvard Munch, and the woodcut later became a major preoccupation of the German Expressionists Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde and Max Beckmann; lithographed posters were a specialty of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec; Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró experimented with drypoint, etching, and lithography, among other techniques, in new and original ways; Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns exploited the painterly aspects of lithography and the commercial look of screenprint. Jackson Pollock was one of the most innovative painters of the 20th century. While Picasso and Braque's Cubism shattered the tradition of single, fixed-point perspective, and Matisse broke with the notion of naturalistic color, Pollock abandoned the tradition of easel painting and executed his paintings on the floor, some on a monumental scale. He developed a way of working in which he poured, dripped, or splashed the paint onto the canvas, allowing the pull of gravity to play a full part in the execution of the work. Walking around the painting, at times standing on it, Pollock became immersed in the act of painting. The source of his art, he claimed, was the unconscious. Pollock's radical approach to abstract painting was underscored, however by a residual interest in the future which, until recently has consistently been ignored in interpreting the celebrated dripped paintings.
