Product Description
We are pleased to bring this classic work back into print. A compendium of the life and work of Maxfield Parrish, it is an essential part of a Parrish library. For the collector, the publisher has included a value guide to some of the products that bear Parrish images. Examples of Parrish's most famous book illustrations are shown, including selections from Mother Goose in Prose and the Arabian Nights. Also included are his famous magazine covers-from Life, Collier's, Harper's Weekly, etc., as well as all the landscapes that he painted for Brown and Bigelow, who reproduced them as calendars every year from 1936 to 1963. One of the highlights of the book is the chapter on Parrish's technique, examining in depth his materials, favorite methods, and unique way of painting. In addition, there is a lengthy excerpt from an unpublished manuscript by Maxfield Parrish, Jr., explaining step-by-step his father's glazing technique and use of photography in his work. This definitive study also contains numerous revealing excerpts from Parrish's unpublished correspondence with family, friends, and clients. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Golden Age Captured in Paint
Note: I made some immature person angry by giving negative reviews of books written to "prove the Book of Mormon." Rather than answer my criticism, this person automatically gives my reviews negative votes. Oh, well.

Your "helpful" votes are appreciated, and please remember that a short review is not necessarily a bad review if it leads you to a great book.

I love "Daybreak" (see cover) with a nude figure standing above a girl sleeping in a columned pavilion. If you like this painting, then check out different reproductions (the colors vary widely and change the nature and mood of the painting. Really change it.

"Twilight" is another great painting. For me, it is evocative of a great mystery. You want to step into that farm yard and explore the house and barn. No people are shown, but it gives me the feeling that ghosts live there (without being scary--in a dreamy sense).

"Afterglow" is also intreguing, showing a New England church as the stars come out.

The book is full of both color and black-and-white illustrations. I would love to see "Landing of the Brazen Boatman" in color. A robed figure is walking down some stairs of a strange temple while a boatman awaits.

What a gift of imagination Maxfield Parrish left to the world!

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and prcatical
A comprehensive survey of the artist's work, it covers not just his paintings, but also his posters, advertising and magazine and book illustration and the murals. Very well illustrated and with a comprehensive text it chronicles the artist's development and his vast array of work.

One of the most interesting chapters is that which explains in detail the methods Parrish employed to achieve his remarkable results. This includes his use of photography and the painstaking glazing techniques he employed.

A very interesting and useful publication; it is not one that sits idly on my book shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Glimpse of ethereal beauty
The version of this book that I own is from the second printing (1974). What a beautiful book! In some ways Parrish seems to be the dreamy counterpart to Norman Rockwell. An amazing attention to detail and lighting. To reiterate a point raised in other reviews, this book would benefit from more color plates, but that is a minor criticism. While I have not yet purchased any of the other books in print on Maxfield's work...this is a fine place to start. There is a generous sampling of landscapes, product advertisements and magazine covers. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference for illustrators and art enthusiasts.
This book has always been the "essential" Maxfield Parrish reference for me.It contains page after page of information about the artist's incredible personal and professional life.It also goes into great depth detailing the illustrator's perfected (and tedious) technique of creating illustrations. From crafting meticulous miniatures for layout to the final process of layering oil glazes onto the canvas. It's all there.

I would highly recommend this book to Illustrators, art teachers, and overall art enthusiasts who want to expand their knowledge about illustration and a true master of the past. This book has been cited in other publications such as "Step by Step Graphics" for the depth analysis of his technique.

My only small criticism is that I would've liked to seen more color prints within the book.A few too many black and white reproductions of the artwork. That aside, I feel this book is of tremendous value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abundant, gorgeous color plates.
I, like you, want to own Daybreak--perhaps more so than any other painting.Sometimes an illustration entertains, perhaps greatly. Some evoke admiration, even gaping admiration. In the case of several Parrish paintings, admiration is merely the aftertaste of a much more powerful emotion: the craving to be in the space the artist has created, to have or to be the characters therein.A desire to truly exit this world and remain in the other. The list of works that affect me in that way starts off like this:It's A Wonderful Life, Oz, Narnia, Harry Potter's magical England, Parrish's Daybreak & Land of Make-Believe & Air Castles et al., Robert Heinlein's Glory Road, ERB's A Princess Of Mars...We read or watch or view them over and over again in an attempt to ease the longing.

This volume satisfied that craving long enough for me to catch my breath. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good job
The book has a lot about Gilbert, and, strangely, the plates are not sequential. Sometimes paintings are mentioned by name without reference to plate number, so you have to flip pages to find what you're looking for and to determine whether it is there at all.For those interested in Parrish, the stories are entertaining and the graphics production is very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
one of the best books on maxfield parrish. you won't be sorry to own it and see many of his best works with informative explanations.

The illustrators of this era are true artists. It was nice to find this book, which I find impossible to locate in retail stores.

4-0 out of 5 stars Maxfield Parrish: The Masterworks
A good quality book with extensive text, excellent illustrations and a description of Parrish's technique in his own words. The number of color illustrations is satisfactory and should not disappoint at the current asking price of $53.55.Parrish's later landscape paintings are reasonably well represented in full page, full color illustrations, and although I would have liked more of them, it is not a significant failing of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for every Parrish fan!
I bought this book and I never regret of getting another Parrish art book again. This artbook is excellent with deep details of Parrish's way of study through his paintings.Theories based on his view of perspective and composition, it is something great to read about! However, one little thing I personally find missing is the "Dream Days" series, that is missing from this artbook and should have been included.Otherwise, get the book and you'll fall in love with Parrish blue all over again. ... Product Description
Maxfield Parrish was one of the most popular American artists of the 20th century. His engaging covers for Scribners and Life, murals such as Old King Cole and the Pied Piper, and posters, calendars, and paintings have delighted viewers for over 100 years. This is the first critical examination of Parrish's place in the history of American art and culture.Amazon.com Review
Maxfield Parrish, the prodigiously gifted,turn-of-the-20th-century illustrator famous for his limpid bluelandscapes and dreamy pubescent models draped in gossamer threads, hasrolled in and out of artistic favor for nearly a century. In 1964,critic Lawrence Alloway wrote about Parrish's odd place in the historyof American art: "He was the most popular artist the country everproduced, with prints in a quarter of all American homes at one time;and yet his kitschy compositions were considered risible among theeducated art elite." Parrish himself had a sophisticated sense of hisown place in the pantheon: "There are countless artists whose shoes Iam not worthy to polish whose prints would not pay the printer," hewrote. "The question of judgement is a puzzling one." But newmovements of the 1960s, including photo-realism and pop art, led tocritical reappraisal of Parrish's oeuvre, and a few of the later newimage painters, such as Joan Nelson, found sweet inspiration in hisatmospheric skies and evocative, shadowy forests.

Parrish is finally receiving his due with this truly intelligent, fascinating book. It is the catalog to a traveling exhibition organized by the author, Sylvia Yount, the curator of collections at the Museum of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia--Parrish's alma mater and hometown, respectively. With Mark F. Bockrather, a conservator who elucidates Parrish's formidable craftsmanship, Yount has done a fine job of resurrecting Parrish yet again. She offers a sensitive analysis of the place his pastoral, idyllic, storybook innocence played in a world that Freud, the Great War, the Depression, and yet another world war inexorably tore to shreds. --Peggy Moorman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful work and nicely presented
For a century, illustrators have been looked down upon by "fine artists."Finally, Maxfield Parrish, a truely FINE artist, gets his day. He's represented not as an illustrator, but as an artist.Havingseen the originals 20 minutes prior to buying the book, I can say withconfidence that the reproductions are the truest I have ever seen.A greatin the art world (Daybreak was estimated to be in 25% of all Americanhomes), the book is the best look back at an American great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good mid- price Parrish book
This is a good entry point into the world of Maxfield Parrish for the budget conscious. It provides the usual essay on the artist's life. What I found really useful was a description of his techniques in the fourthsection. It includes infraredand microscopic cross section analysis of hiscanvasses. If you are looking for an even more economical book on Parrish, try Maxfield Parrish by Laurence and Judy Cutler by Gramercy books alsopublished in 1999. It always intrigues me that published reproductions ofhis works always 'color' differently from book to book. ... Read more

Product Description

Maxfield Parrish, Master of Make-Believe describes the life and popularity of this famous early twentieth-century American artist. This beautifully illustrated catalogue includes all types of Parrish's work, from his sumptuous murals to his fun and lively works based on Mother Goose's fairytales. The works included come from collections all over the United States, including museums like the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where Parrish studied, as well as private collectors who have been persuaded to part with their treasures in order to give the artist the exposure that he deserves.Readers unfamiliar with Parrish's name will find an artist with an extraordinary talent for using colours, as well as an ability to create fantastical worlds, for children and adults. "I am hopelessly commonplace, I don't know what people see in me!", the artist once commented in his standard low-key delivery. What we see is an artist who still believes in beautiful places of gorgeous imagery executed in masterful realism based on imagination, talent and execution for its concept. Maxfield Parrish's art is instantly accessible and real. The book accompanies an exhibition by the same name organised by the Trust for Museum Exhibitions, Washington, DC.

I just love the beautiful paintings of Maxfiled Parish and have wanted to place his works around my home for a long time. However, being on a tight budget makes this difficlut....at least it did until I got this book of posters. While the prints aren't as large as I would idealy purchace, the quality and quantity for the price can't be beat. This is a good, inexpensive way to get good-quality art onto your walls even on a pin-up poster budget.

Product Description
Maxfield Parrish (American, 1870-1966) employed a slow, delicate, and labor-intensive technique to achieve the crystalline clarity of his paintings: rather than paint in opaque oils, he built up layers of transparent pigment--a method that led to extraordinary subtlety of palette and, often, to an effect as if the painting were backlit. Among the twelve luminous images in this calendar are Stars, Sunrise, Waterfall, and Ecstasy.

2-0 out of 5 stars BAD REPRODUCTIONS
It's sad that such an otherwise valuable book suffers from shockingly poor reproductions.More than half of the illustrations are either grossly too light or too dark, with crude contrast balances. The colors are also frequently wrong. In short, the printing of this bookwas a rushed, cheap, hack-job done in China.Basically, the book is nearly worthless.I'm very disappointed, this could have been a very wonderful art book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value and very informative.
Yes, the images are somewhat small due to the book's size, but then again that is why it is one quarter the price of the coffee table books! Some of these reviewers, I swear...

I would consider myself a Parrish fan but not a fanatic. Therefore, this book is perfect for me. It is absolutely filled with high-quality color illustrations, is well bound, and provides substantial background material. I really appreciated the sections which also showcase other American illustrators who were contemporary with his work. Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars an interesting addition to Parrish books
A small-format book like this can never be the best Maxfield Parrish reference, but I did enjoy the authors' slightly different take on his work. The pictures include many pieces that I had never seen before, and the text is thorough and entertaining. (Though the non-chronological order of the writing can be confusing.) I was intrigued to find that Parrish's long-suffering wife was also an illustrator, though, sadly, no examples of her work are illustrated. The authors do show the work of many other contemporary illustrators, including several that I had never heard of. I believe the choice of images was greatly determined by the collection the authors were drawing from, but the pictures were still interesting to see.

I have to say I'm less secure about the accuracy of this book's text, now that I've read some of the reviews discussing factual errors in the same authors' book on J. C. Leyendecker, but for those interested in Parrish, this book will at least partly satisfy.

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing overall...
When I ordered this book I must admit I was not as thorough as I should have been when looking over the item specifics. I thought this was a larger version than it turned out to be. Measuring 6 1/2" x 8 1/2", the image reproductions are barely postcard sized and even smaller throughout. I should have gleaned the very idea from the price (but that can also be deceiving from book to book). Another thorn in my satisfaction level is it contains a loose errata sheet with corrections of many discrepancies. I've always thought it was chintzy to not include the corrections in the text when reprinted material goes back to press. Otherwise, it seems to be a very informative tome on Parrish as well as touching on the other illustrators of the day like Barclay, Betts, Christy, Goodwin, Oakley and many more notables. The book is nicely printed and bound on heavy paper. It simply falls short on its overall visual scope, which is the one thing an illustration reproduction retrospective should strive for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a fine book!
I have just finished reading the book "Maxfield Parrish and the American Imagists", quite literally from cover to cover and I could not allow the occasion to pass without writing a review. It was, indeed, my profound pleasure to have read this book. I have been an MP aficiondo for probably 45 years of more. During this time I have acquired a very small and modest collection of his art prints as well as a dozen or more books and other miscellaneous items over the years. More importantly along theway I have gained a depth of appreciation of MP's genius as an artist and thinker. The publication of this book in 2004 represents a compendium of this American icon's work that brought it all together for me. It represents a resource and reference that I will be sure to refer to from time to time. Thechoice of format, quality stock, a faithful rendering and reproduction of the artwork and well-written text are impressive and unexcelled. Excellent! ... Read more

Product Description
The world knows Maxfield Parrish for his legacy of extraordinary paintings--technical tours-de-force whose subjects ranged from the inspiring to the farcical. But Parrish is best appreciated in the context of his own life and times. This book elegantly provides that context with an overview of his brilliant book illustrations and of the era when the field of illustration flourished.

Part lively Parrish biography and part lucid historical analysis of a unique epoch in American art, Maxfield Parrish and the Illustrators of the Golden Age draws upon the archives of the American Illustrators Gallery (New York City) and other resources to present works by Parrish, Pyle, Wyeth, Smith, Green, Schoonover, and their contemporaries Alice Barber Stephens, Anna Wheelen Betts, Ethel Franklin Betts, and Mead Shaeffer. Parrish's paintings are reproduced by authorization of the Maxfield Parrish Family Trust. Text by Margaret Wagner.

Product Description
Maxfield Parrish (1870–1966) remains one of America’s most beloved artists, widely known for his incredibly detailed and lavish works. His landscapes are perhaps the least well known of his masterpieces, although they were the closest to his heart. Indeed, in his later years, Parrish dedicated himself almost entirely to landscape scenes, sometimes reworking earlier pieces to remove human figures.

In this witty and illuminating book, Parrish expert Alma Gilbert argues persuasively that Parrish’s better-known illustration career was a thirty-five-year detour on his path to achieving his true goal, a dedication to reproducing nature in all its splendor. The 50-plus color plates in this book show how masterfully he achieved that goal, while the text provides fascinating insight into the stories behind these glorious images. Also featured are lovely photos of Parrish’s estate, The Oaks, where he found refuge and inspiration, shots of the artist and his family, and hitherto unpublished correspondence. Together, these elements help sketch in the context surrounding this remarkable man and his extraordinary art. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very disappointed in this book.I have been a huge Maxfield Parrish fan since the early 70's.His landscapes are my favorite. But this book has very few paintings from the artist and seems to focus more on the photos of the farm where he lived. I felt that I was very misled by the title 'The Landscapes'. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I thought it was a waste of money.I have seen more of his Landscapes in magazine articles!

2-0 out of 5 stars Is this book about MP's work or Alma Gilbert World?
If I could have found a copy of this book to preview before ordering I never would have bought this book. Far, far too many pages and current photos devoted to the landscape surrounding his home. And as I said before,Is this book about the landscape paintings of Maxfield Parrish or is itabout Alma Gilbert and her ties to his life? This book was a disappointmentto me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book with rarely seen landscapes
Some of Maxfield Parrish's least known but most vibrantly beautiful works are the landscapes featured in this book. Here is his ultimate mastery of light and color.

Although commercial illustration built his fame andfortune, Parrish's true love was landscape painting. Many excerpts from hiscorrespondence attest to this fact and provide a remarkable glimpse intothe background of the artist.

There are several pages of photos ofParrish's estate, "The Oaks", which provided the inspiration formany of his works. Now owned by the author, it is evident how thesemagnificent grounds are reflected in the paintings.

The book concludeswith 34 full page color plates of landscape paintings produced for theBrown & Bigelow Co. from 1936-1963. Having been a Parrish fan foryears, I found several new favorites here. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very brief, and mostly for the completist
The Cutlers have put together a very attractive book. It's well printed, and it's Parrish artwork - of course it's attractive.

The text tends towards the dry, I'm afraid. It says much about the few generations of ancestors the led up to Maxfield himself, and offer a vast wealth of minutiae about Parrish's life. Did you know that one of his neighbors was a best-selling author during early decades of the 1900s? Wow. Lots of the text isn't nearly that thrilling.

The pictures, though, are beautiful. They make the most of Parrish's brilliant sense of light, landscape, and romantic vision. There are works here that haven't often been shown before, especially from his later landscape ouvre. The cynic might say "OK, It's a girl on a rock, without the girl." Parrish said so himself, though not quite in those words. Whatever you might say, these pictures are excellent craft: evocative, well put together, even appealing to people that "don't like art."

It's a pleasant, but not earth-shaking contribution to the Parrish collection. Enjoy the pictures, even if they're not all like his younger and more familiar work. Skip the text, unless your interests are very academic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, not well done!
I personally found the book to be a big disappointment...both in quality of content as well as knowledge of subject matter.

There are too many similarities to other published works to suit me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Parrish 'Buy"
Of all the books on Parrish, these authors are the most responsible in the history of the artist, in their analysis of the art works, and their research of the genre!! The illustrations are directly from the original paintings and glow as do the originals themselves.

Who can go wrong at $9.99 with such printing quality as this hardback?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift idea
This is a delightful collection of Maxfield Parrish's art, presented in 4 small, elegant volumes. Each book covers a different category of Parrish's work including ads, book & magazine covers, and fine art prints.

Themost popular paintings are here as expected, along with many seldom seenpieces. There is also a very insightful text that chronicles Parrish'slife, career and inspirations, and how the various paintings came about.

I especially enjoyed the book illustrations with mythologicalcharacters, genies & dragons, and fantastic landscapes. Anotherfavorite is the advertisements, with 10 Edison Mazda lamp ads among manyothers.

These quality books with vibrant color illustrations on finepaper would make a great gift for any Parrish enthusiast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, a classic to be treasured for years to come!
I've been collecting books for some years now, and among my favorites are the Calla Editions. Being an ardent fan of fairy tales, folk tales and fables, the Calla Editions fulfill my craving for beautifully-illustrated books and imaginative tales. I finally purchased "The Knave of Hearts", the result of the successful collaboration of Louise Saunders, wife of Scribner's editor Max Perkins and renowned illustrator Maxfield Parrish.

Parrish's works are particularly interesting because of the beautiful coloring used and the element of humor in the illustrations, a touch of whimsy that delights and enchants. "The Knave of Hearts" was the last children's book that Parrish illustrated and it is a work of pure beauty. The book is over-sized, 11 1/2" by 13 3/4", 40 pages in length, and features 23 color plates with full-color endpapers. This is an unabridged republication (thank you Dover!) of the edition originally published by Charles Scribner & Sons, NY, in 1925. A must-have for collectors and those who love beautiful books!

3-0 out of 5 stars beautiful, but mixed up pages
I was thrilled to find that Calla had published a reissue of this beautiful book. My husband bought it for me, and it arrived quickly from Amazon. The book is perfect - except: the last several pages are mixed up. It goes from page 22 to 28 and then repeats earlier pages. Now I don't know how the story ends! Did anyone else notice this in their copies? I'll send it back to be replaced, and hope to receive a copy without the misprint.

Other than the page mix up, it is well worth it. The large size is appealing, as is the heavy paper and bright print quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
This book is beautiful and amazing for any Parrish fan.Well worth the modest price. You will be thrilled to own it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous reproduction of an out-of-print classic
As a fan of Maxfield Parrish, I was intrigued to see that a publisher had brought out a facsimile edition of "The Knave of Hearts," a book I knew of only by the illustrations found in books about MP. This edition is just astonishing. I've never seen such heavy-weight (80#!) pages. This is a truly heirloom-quality book. If you buy one for small children, make sure to order a backup! You'll want it for when they get older. Bravo to Calla Editions!

4-0 out of 5 stars fine twentieth century verse
Black Sparrow Press has done it again. They seem to be the avatars of modern poetry.Eileen Myles is another fine living poet to get the Black Sparrow treatment. This collection combines both old poems from the 7os aswell as newer material from the 90s.The old and new material play off ofeach other very well. She has the ability to write personally withoutwhining. This is a quality often missing in poetry today. Her life hasbeen an interesting one and her poetry is a startling testament to thatfact. One poem I really enjoyed was An Attitude About Poetry. It sums upher attitude toward poetry and it is well stated.Other poems likeMysogyny and To The Maiden of Choice (to name a couple) reveal her gift forirony and her passion for life. This is a great collection.I reccommendit for anyone that wants to read new poetry that sounds a barbaric yawp. ...
