A good overview and example of her work.
This is a good overview of Georgia's works with examples from most of her periods and themes. An easy view and read.

Georgia O'Keeffe by Nancy Frazier
As a parent of a teenager, I took a peek inside to find out if there was anything on her days at Chatham Hall, a high school O'Keeffe attended in Virginia a century ago, which was then Chatham Episcopal Institute.

A few quotes from the book:

"she would remember that period as important especially because of her long walks in the hills "with the line of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the horizon calling me, as distances have always called me."' (p.10)

"I only remember two things I painted in those years....I slapped my paint about quite a bit and did not care where it landed."

"Of tremendous importance during this time was the admiration and encouragement Georgia received from the principal at Chatham, Elizabeth may Willis, who was also the art teacher.She saw Georgia's talent and encouraged it unstintingly.Even in later years Willis followed O'Keeffe's career, inviting her to substitute as art teacher when she herself took a few months off, and traveling to New York to see exhibits of her student's work many years later." (p.11,12)

"Georgia ... graduated from Chatham at the age of 17" and "went on the study at the Art Institute of Chicago...."

About Chicago Art Institute, according to Frazier, O'Keeffe said "I don't remember learning anything except that I finally became accustomed to the idea of the nude model." (p.15)

Apparently she blossomed as a painter later. O'Keeffe was "encouraged ... unstintingly" at Chatham.She even enjoyed patronage of a sort from Chatham in her employment as substitute art teacher. About her, Lewis Mumford later wrote "Miss O'Keeffe is perhaps the most original painter in America." (p.7)

"She was not unfriendly or antisocial....She joined in pranks with high spirits while keeping her reputation as a nonconformist."

Wonderfully written with beautifully reproduced prints.It was great to get information of her development along with excellent reproductions of her work.(...)

My Favorite of Calendars!!
Yes this is the 7th one I've bought. I love Georgia O'keeffes' art. Her colors are vivid, her lines sensual. A great way to get great art into your home or workplace.

Collaborations between an artist and a conservator
First book ever to publish the correspondence between a known artist (O'Keeffe) and conservator (Caroline K. Keck).Very useful for the reader to learn how the work of a conservator can affect the look and long-term preservation of paintings.

The book also contains important information on O'Keeffe's materials and techniques and the many small sample cards of color she prepared in order to make the choices for the palettes of her paintings.

Georgia O'Keeffe's roots in abstraction
Fifty-one full page color plates arranged chronologically from 1915 thru the 1970s bring out the "pulsing, spiraling, swirling circular forms" that O'Keeffe consistently used as a basis for her paintings and drawings and occasional sculptures. Although O'Keeffe did not singularly introduce or use spiral forms, more than any other American or European modern artist, she "developed an entire vocabulary of circular forms" which identifies her work over her long career. She was too imaginative and innovative to be confined to these forms, but in her paintings of flowers, skies and landscapes, rocks, and her "pelvic series" in the 1940s, she returns again and again to them. She builds on these with great flourishes, bold colors and shadings for depth, and repetitions and morphings of aspects of circular forms. Stuhlman's essay focuses on circular forms as the basis for O'Keeffe's art throughout her career. Lynes's essay points to the sources for these in the Southwest landscape she was attached to. The focus on O'Keeffe's circular forms goes a long way toward explaining the pleasing, alluring effects of her art works; and it adds depth to analysis of them.

wonderful gift
I sent this book as a gift, based on the glowing review on this page. My donee/friend wrote: "What a wonderful surprise and delight the O'Keefe book has brought me today!It is indeed something very special, withelegant color illustrations, plus many photos from various times of herlife, and biographical details all through the text. There is a wonderfulphoto of her (by Ansel Adams) -- she wears a dark sweater, and is sitting,sketching, at the rocky entrance to what may be a cave --- and all of herdesign ideas seem to be there in the photo: her own interesting form,contrasts of dark and light, austerity yet beautiful rhythms....I had noidea what a pathfinder she was, going her own road by interpreting objectsin an entirely personal way. Outstanding book from an outstanding exhibition
This is the companion catalog to the O'Keeffe exhibition at the Phillips gallery in Washington, DC, and is a wonderful volume on O'Keeffe whether or not you were fortunate enough to see this exhibition.What impressed memost about the exhibition (and the book) is how intelligently it was puttogether.It examines O'Keeffe's development as an artist by tracking bothher philosphy and her influences, and some rarely shown works were chosento represent this in the exhibition (and are reproduced in the book).Ofall the books on O'Keeffe that I've read, and of all the exhibitions I'veseen of her work, this one by far does the best job of explaining both theartist and her work. ... Turner, I believe did a good job at summarizing her art with her life. She showed the art with what O'Keefe looked at herserlf. "Georgia O'Keeffe: An American Perspective" is a definitive collection of more than one hundred remarkable paintings of a uniquely impressive, fine painter of the 20th Century, Georgia O'Keeffe, who was born in 1887 and died in 1986 when she was one year short of 100 years. Lauris Morgan-Griffiths, a long-time fan of O'Keeffe's art who has visited her home in New Mexico, did a very good job in compiling the paintings represented in this 17" x 14" x 1" art book with 176 pages. Each artwork is shown in various sizes with captions and interesting essays. The author studied photography and printing at the London College of Printing. She is a journalist and writer specializing in art, design and photography. She chronicled O'Keeffe's artworks from 1915 through 1977--the same year that the legendary female artist was awarded the "Presidential Medal of Freedom," one the two recognitions bestowed upon her, the other was "National Medal of Arts" in 1985.

Like the author, I am also a long-time fan of O'Keeffe having collected some of her works of art and books such as Nicholas Callaway's "One Hundred Flowers" and Britta Benke's Georgia O'Keeffe, 1887-1986: Flowers In The Desert in addition to this beautiful art book. To my eyes, some of her most remarkable artworks represented here include the following:

"Petunia No. 2" (Oil on Canvas, 1924) - This is among the first flowers that was exhibited. This beautiful artwork is housed at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe.

"Petunias" (Oil on Hardboard Panel, 1925) - O'Keeffe once said: "When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else."

"Purple Petunias" (Oil on Canvas, 1928) - According to the author this is "a beautiful study of life, of a lightness of spirit."

"Music, Pink and Blue No. 2" (Oil on Canvas, 1919) - Most of her fans are aware that O'Keeffe listened to music while painting.

"White Flower On Red Earth 1" (Oil on Canvas, 1943) - She was in her mid-fifties when she painted this unnamed white flower.

"Bleeding Heart" (Pastel on Paper-faced Cardboard, 1932) - This piece of art is evocative of O'Keeffe feelings about her husband's growing infidelity and was openly having an affair with another woman that continued until his death.

"Single Lily With Red" (Oil on Board, 1928) - It has been said that O'Keeffe painted this at the height of her emotional distress due to her husband's infidelity.

"Green Leaves" (Oil on Canvas, 1923) - She also loved painting leaves and gave them the same level of appreciation she had for flowers.

"Wave, Night" (Oil on Canvas, 1928) - To O'Keeffe, sea was "a complete revelation." One of the things she loved doing was visiting some friends in Maine, and enjoyed "running down the boardwalk to the ocean and watched the changing color of the sea, the repetitive flow of the waves rippling in over the beach."

"2 Calla Lilies On Pink" (Oil on Canvas, 1928) - It is astounding the way O'Keeffe painted these Calla Lilies. The eye-catching color combinations are lovely and what a sight to behold!

"Jimson Weed" (Oil on Canvas, 1936) - "O'Keeffe's love of nature was ignited at an early age and never left her. It was a passion so strong that she truly identified with the natural world." Jimson weed is also known as a "miracle flower" that grew wild in New Mexico.

This art book is a perfect introduction to the life and works of Georgia O'Keeffe who was one of the few female painters who made it as one of the greatest artists whose works are exceptional and uniquely beautiful. One of her most admired paintings, "Calla Lilies With Red Anemone" was sold in 2001 for $6.2 million, the highest price for any female artist sold at auction.
