5-0 out of 5 stars Awonderful book!
I really liked this. Lots of color reproductions of O'Keeffe's paintings, including several "fold-out" double pages.Covers her early mid and late periods. This is also a book about the museum devoted to her in New Mexico, The size of the book is nice too.A bit smaller than "coffee-table" huge dimension.A book you can browse through. Can be an introduction to Georgia O'Keeffe's art and life for somebody just learning about her, or can be extra fun for a real O'Keeffe fan. ... Georgia was a women who had a speicial talent in art. She went to many different schools to learn about the many different types of painting. She was critized my male artists because she was a women who wanted to paint. One man who helped her in her career was her husband who owned an art gallery in New York. Her paintings are very unique compared to other artists. She painted very big and colorful. Her drawings had cartoon characteristics which many people didn't like because it was not traditional. I liked this book very much because it showed how women in those days had to be very motivated to survive the pressure in the men's world. Also it showed how Georgia and other painters brought a knew style of painting into the new world.

Product Description
The new Art Encounters series was created as a platform for young readers to develop an appreciation for the work of the great masters. Each book is a piece of historical fiction based on a single painting from one of the great masters and set at the time in which that work was painted. This series gives readers an inside look at the artist, their techniques, style and inspiration. The first title, The Spirit Catchers, is based on Georgia O'Keeffe's "Ram's Skull with Brown Leaves". History and fiction merge in this uplifting novel about a boy whose artistic talent awaits a great mind to uncover it. A child of the depression, Parker begins his relationship with Georgia O'Keeffe by stealing her property, notably a camera. She is prepared to let him rot in jail when she develops the photos he has taken with the stolen camera and recognizes the boy's raw ability. Set against the backdrop of New Mexico's stark beauty, Parker's struggle to find his artistic vision clashes with O'Keeffe's fierce independence and private nature. Parker tries to connect with his surroundings through the use of a camera, while O'Keefe uses it as an aid for finding points of view otherwise difficult to obtain. This book is a literary interpretation of O'Keeffe's painting, "Ram's Skull with Brown Leaves," as well as an intimate look at the artist's fame, her relationship with Alfred Stieglitz, and her creative process. ... I really liked the book, read it in 2 days and although there are references of Georgia O'Keffee, it was fiction-I do not normally read fiction-so when I started reading and on the first page it disclosed that it is just that, a story and not true, I read it anyway and hope of all hope wised that some of it actually may have happened. Or it was all just the writers imagination.
It read so well that it all seemed possible.
I think the only true part was the location and the artist's home.
Worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars O'Keeffe's Paintings in beautiful reproductions
This book contains selections from Nicholas Callaway's other O'Keeffe books- One Hundred Flowers, In the West, and New York Years. If you own only one of them, this is the one to own. There are some surprising paintings in here, especially if you've only seen the flower paintings before. The book is quite large, and the color reproductions seem pretty accurate from the few paintings I've actually been able to compare. Wonderful book!

Product Description
This classic ground-breaking volume--the first to consider Georgia O'Keeffe's works on paper--explores the medium of watercolor, charcoal, pencil, and pastel. O'Keeffe's earliest mature works, which led to her first New York exhibitions and initial acclaim, were works on paper. These works can be viewed in the larger context of O'Keeffe's career as an artist. They move from stylized, flat patterning of the early charcoals through the rhapsodic organic forms and fresh uses of color in the water colors to the tighter, more focused compositions of the later pastels, charcoals, and pencil drawings. Finally, the works on paper of the 1960s and 1970s are characterized by an extreme simplification and almost decorative flatness. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars minor works by a major artist
Art critic E.M. Benson is quoted in the introduction of this book saying "I never saw an O'Keeffe that reminded me of anything but O'Keeffe", and the pieces selected for this book, though most of them are minor, early works, are an indication of how her talent would develop, with her unique vision and terrific sense of color.
As is stated in Barbara Haskell's text, they "provide valuable insight into the origins of her vocabulary and basic approach to art".

The illustrations include eleven watercolors reproduced in black and white, from 1916-1934, a monotype from 1917, twentyfour color plates of watercolors from 1915-1922, and ten pieces from later years, mostly pastels and drawings, from 1925-1977.
With good quality paper and fine color reproduction in a semi-gloss finish, this is recommended for art students, as it is always interesting to see the promise of early works, and die-hard O'Keefe fans. ... Read more

The artist Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) and the photographer Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) first met in 1916, when she heard that he was giving her drawings their first public showing - without her consent. The following year Stieglitz began his portrait of his future wife, according to his idea that a portrait was not just one photograph, but a series that would portray the many aspects of a person. Expanded from the original edition, which was prepared with O'Keeffe's assistance in 1978, this book includes a representative selection of 79 of the hundreds of photographs which were taken over a period of 30 years. ... Product Description
"Bram Dijkstra is one of our most consistently brilliant, lucid, original, and independent explorers of modern culture. His newest book illuminates Georgia O'Keeffe, the landscapes of her mind, and America itself."--Catharine Stimpson, New York University

Georgia O'Keeffe has long been recognized as one of America's most adventurous early modernist artists. But critics often suggest that she became a revolutionary despite her American background, not because of it.

Bram Dijkstra challenges that point of view. In this searching reappraisal of O'Keeffe's work, the distinguished cultural historian shows that her art was decisively shaped by the America in which she grew up. In doing so, he casts new light on the facts of O'Keeffe's remarkable life and offers incisive new readings of many of her most important paintings.

Art historians have largely accepted the view that O'Keeffe's art was shaped by Alfred Stieglitz and the work of the European modernists she encountered under his tutelage--a view actively encouraged by the famous photographer himself. Dijkstra counters this idea by taking us into the cultural environment of her childhood and by illuminating the details of her early education in art. He shows that O'Keeffe's mature style found its origin in such apparently unlikely sources as Edgar Allan Poe's speculations about the androgynous nature of the soul before industrialism, and in what Dijkstra calls the "transcendental materialism" of the tonalist movement in turn-of-the-century American art.

Dijkstra also explores O'Keeffe's important--but until now widely neglected--identification with the feminist aims and artistic concerns of the radical periodical The Masses. And he shows that even the daring new styles of illustration featured there, and in other magazines of the period, significantly influenced her development of a personal style. Dijkstra argues, moreover, that O'Keeffe's very American search for an organic abstraction of form that would celebrate nature allowed her to develop a humanist style that deliberately challenged the early European modernists' emphasis on mechanistic constructions of form against nature.

Beautifully written and painstakingly researched, Georgia O'Keeffe and the Eros of Place is a major reassessment of O'Keeffe's place in American culture and a tribute to the artist's steadfast refusal to abandon her "provincial" belief in the shaping spirit of place. ... Read more

The vast landscape of New Mexico won the heart of American artist Georgia O'Keeffe on her first visit there in 1917, and the open sky, parched earth, and bleached white bones she found there soon became the prominent subjects of her paintings. She granted John Loengard, a photographer for Life magazine, the rare opportunity to photograph her in her home at Ghost Ranch in 1966. Fifty of the black-and-white photographs he took that day fill this 79-page, small-format hardcover and form a classic record of a day in the life of an eminent yet elusive artist. 5-0 out of 5 stars Darn! Another Book Out of Print!
No point reviewing it in detail. Hartley, Dove, and O'Keefe are three of my favorite 20th C painters, and I was reminded of this book by seeing some of their works in the new De Young Museum in San Francisco. Hartley's stock seems to be rising these days. The Walker Museum in Minneapolis is the best place to get to know him. I had a chance to buy a Hartley canvas some twenty years ago, but I thought it was overpriced. Terrible mistake! It would sell for six to eight times more now. With critical assessments shifting from the who-influenced-whom approach to a more open-eyed confrontation with the paintings per se, Hartley is bound to rise even higher.

The new De Young didn't thrill me at first. It looks a lot like Darth Vader's garage from the outside, and it was built to house an essentially provincial collection. HOWEVER... It's getting a comfortable feeling inside, with excellent viewing angles and light, and the collection includes three wonders: 1)great stuff from Indonesia, well displayed and intelligently labeled. 2)great stuff from Mesoamerica, also well displayed. 3)about four good gallery rooms of 20th C American paintings, including the three mentioned above, and Diebenkorn, Jess, de Kooning, Hopper, TH Benton, etc. I like to jog through Golden Gate Park, stop at the De Young to view just one gallery or even one painting, and then jog out to the Pacific. ... Product Description

Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s own descriptive letters, awardwinning author Kathryn Lasky imagines a day in the life of this legendary artist at her Abiquiu, New Mexico, home. Before the first shades of lavender color the morning sky, Georgia rises – eager to walk the rust red hills and discover images that she will later paint: a bone glowing white, the black wings of a raven against the gray sky, a slice of silver moon.

This fresh, imaginative approach, combined with Ora Eitan’s spare, evocative paintings, invites readers into Georgia’s world, revealing how this artist’s creative process is affected by the natural world and small moments of daily life. A biographical overview of O’Keeffe’s life, along with a reproduction of one of her paintings, extends this most unusual portrait of a beloved American artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars In my mind's eye this book captured the essence and personality of whom Georgia O'Keeffe really was!
The old woman rose before dawn and felt the age of her body talking back to her.She had to hurry because she wanted to get outside at the exact time the "first lavender [would] begin to creep across the huge sky."She dressed quicky putting on a simple black dress, stockings and shoes. She easily twisted up her trademark bun and was ready to begin her day.It was still dark out and only a sliver of the moon lit the sky, but Georgia could be seen looking out of her window try to hurry so she wouldn't miss the lavender. She quickly set the water boiling for her tea and replenished the water for her dogs.

It was now ready to head outside and wait. She gathered up her painting supplies and "her walking stick for scaring off rattlesnakes."The sky was still gray and as she walked her body got rid of the stiffness sleep brought to it.A raven flew overhead and Georgia stopped to inhale the "spicy smell of the sagebrush."The sky was still in the process of change and now it was purple. She gathered up a piece of bone from the desert floor and studied it.The lavender was coming soon and she had to sit "down on the desert floor" and she would be ready.

In my mind's eye this book captured the essence and personality of whom Georgia O'Keeffe really was. The author, along with the illustrator, brought together the art and the woman behind it in a subtle and beautiful manner. In the back of the book is a concise, but very comprehensive, biography of the artist and an author's note describing her inspiration and admiration of O'Keeffe. This book would be a nice addition for the middle school art student who has been reading about or studying her works and a perfect one to grace the shelves in any art room!

Product Description
Maria Chabot met Georgia O'Keeffe in Northern New Mexico in 1940. O'Keeffe, one of America's most celebrated artists, was fifty-three and had just purchased a house at Ghost Ranch where she had painted over several previous summers. Chabot, a San Antonian and an aspiring but unknown writer, was a robust twenty-six and familiar with the largely Spanish-speaking culture of the region.

The two were drawn to each other for different reasons. To be free to paint, O'Keeffe needed capable help to sustain and provision her remote household, and although Chabot needed a place to live where she could pursue her writing with minimum distraction, she was also seeking a mentor.

For four summers beginning in 1941, when O'Keeffe was in New Mexico, Chabot lived with the artist at Ghost Ranch, managing her house and guests, and organizing the famed camping-painting trips from which came some of O'Keeffe's most distinguished works of the period. In 1946, Chabot agreed to conceive and oversee the reconstruction of a ruined adobe house in Abiquiu, NM, that would become O'Keeffe's permanent home in 1949.

During the periods when O'Keeffe was in New York where she lived with her husband, famed photographer Alfred Stieglitz, the two women wrote each other with remarkable frequency. Their letters describe their love for northern New Mexico, the hardships of life there during World War II, and their interactions with the diverse cultural groups of the region. The letters also offer insights into the women's very different ways of dealing with the world and their differing perceptions of a complex and sometimes tempestuous friendship. ... Read more

Product Description
Georgia O'Keeffe has dominated twentieth-century American art and proved herself one of its most original talents. Jan Garden Castro's The Art & Life of Georgia O'Keeffe offers the most complete account of both the artist's fascinating private life and her extraordinary career.

In 1917 Alfred Stieglitz, pioneer photographer and impresario, organized O'Keeffe's first one-person exhibition, the last show at his famous gallery "291." She also became the subject of many of his finest photographic works and the center of his personal and professional world for the rest of his life. Her acceptance into the Stieglitz group brought her in touch with a wide circle of creative individuals, including Ansel Adams, Arthur Dove, John Marin, and Charles Demuth, to name a few. While learning from these colleagues, O'Keeffe also maintained a fierce independence from them. She had a certain mystique as a woman and an artist, and many of her contemporaries immortalized her in their work. She was the first woman artist whose face and life were of great interest to the public.

Georgia O'Keeffe's career has spanned much of the history of modern art in America. Here are more than a hundred paintings, many rarely exhibited or reproduced, photographs of O'Keeffe at various stages of her life and of the landscapes that inspired her, and a text richly documented with letters and interviews. This material, combined with Jan Castro's insightful criticism, reveals O'Keeffe's legacy as an artist and the force of her intriguing personality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, defining book
Who is Georgia O'Keeffe? Why did she paint those flowers so HUGE? Why did she paint things of the desert? What kind of relationships did she have? Why is New Mexico so important?

Ask no longer. The answers to all those questions and so much more are found right here in "The Art and Life of Georgia O'Keeffe" just as the title indicates. I love this book! I have poured and poured through it, reading excerpts of her life, about her art. Even the controversies are here. Wouldn't you know that stories and explanations of such an icon of both art and a bold way to live one's life would be here. What a woman! What an artisan!

But such a life and resulting art were not without pain. She and Alfred Stieglitz (her husband and famous photographer) had a controversial relationship (especially for the time period). They practically ripped their clothes off at their first meeting. He had to have this woman (they eventually married after his divorce), but artist that he was, he also had to have other women. His unfaithfulness was the one thing that could unravel this strong woman. But, oh my! She, too, was unfaithful, especially after moving to New Mexico, the home of her heart.

During the time I taught art history at the high school level, I used this book for information about Georgia O'Keeffe. Everything I needed was here, including fascinating personal stories from childhood to the productive and relatively peaceful (not boring!) years in New Mexico. How her art developed from the usual realistic views of nature and places to the very personal O'Keeffe viewpoint are here. Stieglitz was an essential catalyst. Her relationships with both friends and fellow artists are illuminated.

If there is a better book about O'Keeffe, I hope I discover it. As for me and now, "The Art and Life of Georgia O'Keeffe" is highly recommended for its personal stories, explanations of her art, and evaluations of both.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Art and Life of Georgia O'Keeffe
SUMMARY:Georgia O'Keeffe's life, and quite a number of her paintings, are presented here in this fairly large paperback book, along with some of the people and subjects that shaped this great contemporary artist.
POSITIVES:One of the best compilations of Georgia O'Keeffe's artwork that I've seen for awhile, it not only shows her, her life events, and the work she created, but the people who influenced her.You are brought along a journey through O'Keeffe's life, and also what can be gathered through her paintings that reflected her own inner qualities.Best of all in this book, are the countless artistic pieces that she has produced, some photographs by Stieglitz, and other important information that is very valuable in any contemporary art collection.
NEGATIVES:However, the author, despite her intense research and beautiful compilations, does not appear to have put much effort into coordinating her pictures and the explanations that go with them. The organizational aspects of this book are definitely not its best quality, dropping my opinion when it comes to giving it a fair review.I also think you can do better when it comes to finding a book with a comprehensive review of O'Keeffe's life and work.
AGE RANGE:10 and up for comprehension, but much older for enjoyment.(It could be quite boring)

Happy Reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Successful Look at O'Keeffe
Surely it is difficult to sift through an artist's life and write about only the meaningful moments/events.Castro does a good job with this, including what is important and omitting the tedious. Her art criticism is simple and easy to understand and her approach seems balanced. My major complaint with the book is that while she may discuss a painting on page 15, it may well appear on page 200 - with no note or appendix making it possible to find the plate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, but should be sturdier
I love any work by Georgia O'Keeffe, and was thrilled to find this calendar. While the highlighted art is fabulous, the actual binding of the calendar fell apart within a week. This is the first time I've seen this happen with a Pomegranate product -- I was very surprised and saddened. It won't keep me from returning to buy more of their items, but I will try to find them on sale.Bottom line:if you love O'Keeffe, you'll love this planner.Just know that it might not last the year.
