Now Jonah Winter and Ana Juan have drawn on both the art and the life to create an insightful, playful tribute to one of the twentieth century¹s most influential artists. 4-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book, esp for adults
i got this when my son was around 2.5 or 3 years old. it's a very beautiful book and he enjoyed it, but he had a lot of questions about about the magical, mystical parts and frida's emotions that maybe could have been answered better if he were a little older. i guess i'd say this is a book i enjoy more than he does at this stage. still glad that i bought it, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Opening the eyes of young children
My son and I went to a restaurant that it is full of Frida's paintings. He did not like Frida's face expressions in the paintings and said: "that woman is very angry". This book helped my son to understand how artists paint their own reality and in Frida's case, she showed her physical pain in her paintings (it was easy to understand for him how he also chooses specific colors when he paints, and those colors represent his emotional stage). It was a good conversation starter for my son and me (he is seven) about how life can be very hard for some people, but still they can get the best out of it - including such colorful paintings as a result of a difficult life and physical pain.I recommend it to all parents that want to show to their young children the strength of women, the art of women, and the importance of expressing yourself in art forms.I

5-0 out of 5 stars Spanish Version
I own the Spanish version of this book, and I love it.So do all my students - I teach Preschool Spanish (ages 3-6). My 5 year old daughter is an artist and she loves the vivid colors and imaginative characters that follow Frida through her life. The children I teach do not know Spanish, but they are able to look at the pictures and understand the story. They regularly request this book and enjoy looking for the 'spooky' characters. ... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a tasteful gift box
This sturdy box makes a lovely gift, and one that will be useful long after the blank note cards have been used. It contains 10 cards that consist of 5 designs: 2 are paintings, one a self-portrait in bright colors with birds on her shoulders, and "Two Nudes in the Jungle", in earth tones. 3 are photographs; a portrait of her at age 24, another is the color photo that graces the box cover, and the third a marvelous black and white study of Frida with Diego Rivera, and this is the only card that is not repeated in the enclosed booklet. The envelopes are also nice and come in terra-cotta and deep yellow, and the cards are tied with a ribbon and a little milagro (amulet) of a hand.

There is a pocket on the inside of the box cover, that holds a 48 page booklet, which is interesting for its small size; it is filled with photographs, a handful of paintings and sketches, along with some words from her diary, and a short but concise biography.
This makes an excellent gift for a Frida Kahlo fan, or any art lover who likes to write notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A woman of courage and strength...
This has been a staple gift that I always keep in my mind when trying to get a present for a woman of courage and strength. It's an elegant box of cards/book that I discovered in the 1990's and my box (now devoid of the cards) has served as a safety box for important things.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift for an art "aficionado"
This makes a very nice gift for the art lover who has everything. The presentation is exquisite and captures the very essence of Frida Kalho. Inside the book-shaped box, one will find an excellent booklet retracing her life, somewhat in the style of her journal, with lots of collage-likeeffects. The ratio of text to image is oustanding. Along with the bookletis a set of stationery featuring pictures of Frida Kalho and reproductionsof some of her paintings tied with a ribon, holding a "milagro"or Mexican charm. This last detail, along with the red and gold Mexicanfolk border around the box really spell out care, quality and a will todepict as accurately as possible the profile of one of the most intriguingartists of the century.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely pleased with this purchase of concise history .

This best-selling book, now available in an attractive flexi format, reveals the story of two creative geniuses whose important contributions to twentieth-century art were equaled by the public’s fascination with their tumultuous romance.

This captivating book delves into the forces that shaped Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s lives and art, and made them important painters in their own right. Elegant reproductions of their best-known works and historical photographs illustrate the thoughtful text, which explores the political, social, and cultural upheaval that was at the center of their relationship. What emerges is a portrait of the artists, the tension between their love for each other and their commitment to their work, and the indelible legacy of paintings, murals, and words they left behind. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro into the Life of Kahlo & Rivera
This book is a very good introduction to the tragic love story of Frida Kahlo and her husband, the famous Mexican muralist and womanizer Diego Rivera. It presents an insight into their stormy relationship and how it affected her personal life and her art. If you are just getting acquainted with Frida Kahlo this is a great "Frida Kahlo 101" book. It's very well written and easy reading. There are several color illustrations of works by both artists as well as several black & white photos.Although several illustrations of their works are included, there is very little discussion of the works....this book is, for the most part, biographical. And, yes, as another reviewer on Amazon.com pointed out, there are a few typos in the text, and some of the sentence structure is a bit "unusual" and there are a couple of facts that aren't quite right...but just overlook that and you'll find this book very interesting and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
This is a wonderful short collection of color prints and includes an account of the lives of two great artists, troubled though they were. For art lovers who don't love spending a fortune on their art books, this volume is a natural. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars FRIDA KAHLO AND DIEGO RIVERA
This book gave me a glimpse into Frida's life, the turmoil she must have constantly felt to love a man whose weakness was all women. I could almost feel her thoughts through the author's words.
The ending brought me to tears.I wish I knew her.Once I started reading, I couldn't put this book down!thank you for a glimpse into Frida and Diego's lives.

2-0 out of 5 stars Errors, Typos - Poor quality - Photo selection good.
I'm baffled that a book can be published with so many typos and gross errors.Frida's name is even misspelled "Kahalo" in one place. It states her tragic accident happened on "17 December 1925" which it did not (it was September) and it says this twice. On the very next page it shows her diary entries discussing her pain from the injuries, the entries are dated October 1925 and on.I mean it's really distracting and totally unacceptable.Sentences were incomplete and you are left rereading and looking for the rest of the statement. Some of the sentences just didn't make any sense. I ended up reading with a pencil in hand to make corrections. As for the actual bio info, I agree it's interesting, but Frida and Diego were unquestionably fascinating people even in poorly written text.Thankfully I checked this out from our public library.I would NOT recommend this book to anyone.Get another bio from a different publisher. One that is reputable, responsible and does good work.I give it two stars for photo selection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does Life imitate Art?
This book provides better than average insight into lives of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. While people are now eagerly awaiting the Fall 2002 Selma Hayek movie on Frida, this book does provide some background into the world of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. If you are unfamilar with these artists this book would be a good place to start. ... Read more

Product Description
Published in its entirety, Frida Kahlo's amazing illustrated journal documents the last ten years of her turbulent life. These passionate, often surprising, intimate records, kept under lock and key for some 40 years in Mexico, reveal many new dimensions in the complex personal life of this remarkable Mexican artist. The 170-page journal contains the artist's thoughts, poems, and dreams-many reflecting her stormy relationship with her husband, artist Diego Rivera-along with 70 mesmerizing watercolor illustrations.

The text entries, written in Frida's round, full script in brightly colored inks, make the journal as captivating to look at as it is to read. Her writing reveals the artist's political sensibilities, recollections of her childhood, and her enormous courage in the face of more than 35 operations to correct injuries she had sustained in an accident at the age of 18. This intimate portal into her life is sure to fascinate fans of the artist, art historians, and women's culturalists alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diario Personal de Frida Kahlo...en español

5-0 out of 5 stars TIMELY CONSIDERING THE OVERDUE COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION NOW ON DISPLAY IN THE CAPITAL OF MEXICO
Interesting that Calderon now opens a space for a comprehensive display of Kahlo's works in the capitol city, considering the great differences in the politics they espouse so ardently. It is like Rockefeller hiring Diego Rivera for a mural in Manhattan, and scandalized sees Marx and Lenin within!

But such wonders are beyond me, and humbly and happily and gratefully let us receive this excellent facsimile with transcription and commentary of this diary maintained by Frida Kahlo in the final decade of her proud though tormented life. Carlos Fuentes, the famous Mexican novelist contributes one commentary, paired with an introduction by Kahlo scholar Sarah Lowe. Then follows a reporduction of each page of the diary, each page of which we see clearly from Kahlo's own hand, unlike the dubious and revisionist Reagan Diaries recently released. Following the diary pages, each page is then transcribed, commented and put into context very thoroughly. COmprehensive chronologies, bibliogrpahies and indices complete this excellent edition useful to any scholar or Frida fanatic.

Let me note that I received today the second edition, published in September of 2001, and that I have the Spanish edition, which I find more direct and useful than straining to peer through the dim gauze of someone else's transalation of Kahlo's own words. Highly recommended. Deeply and truthfully moving, as everything which falls from the hand of Frida.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great book and it has so much detail about a master.
Frida was more than an artist, she was a woman who knew what she wanted and how to get it. Her only downfall was that she had deep doubts inside her most inner self and shared it with very few.

I guess we all do, but she always wanted people to think she was though when in fact she was very fragile. ... Read more

Product Description

"My painting carries within it the message of pain". Frida Kahlo—born in 1907 near Mexico City—learned about pain at a very early age. She contracted polio at six, and then at eighteen suffered serious and permanent injury to her right leg and pelvis in a terrible bus accident. Young and undaunted, she went on to fall in love with the great mural painter Diego Rivera at a time when their native Mexico was going through a period of thrilling political and cultural upheaval. Rivera and Kahlo were a legendary couple—both were impassioned, lifelong communists while fervently attached to traditional Mexican Indian culture, and both were driven by a relentless artistic ambition that surmounted all the dramas that plagued their marriage.

Later, Frida became the friend and lover of Leon Trotsky. She was greatly admired by the Surrealists and sat for some of the greatest photographers of her day. Her art largely consisted of self-portraits, like the famous paintings The Two Fridas and The Broken Column, though she also left many striking still-lives.

In Frida Kahlo: Painting Her Own Reality, Christina Burrus assesses Frida Kahlo’s extraordinary work—a maelstrom of cruelty, humor, candor, and insolence reflecting the essence of a free, beautiful, courageous woman who concealed her physical pain behind peals of infectious laughter.

Product Description
When Frida Kahlo died in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera asked the poet Carlos Pellicer to turn her family home, the fabled Blue House, into a museum. Pellicer selected some paintings, drawings, photographs, books and ceramics, maintaining the space just as Kahlo and Rivera had arranged it to live and work in. The rest of the objects, clothing, documents, drawings and letters, as well as over 6,000 photographs collected by Kahlo over the course of her life, were put away in bathrooms that had been converted into storerooms. This incredible trove remained hidden for more than half a century, until, just a few years ago, these storerooms and wardrobes were opened up. Kahlo's photograph collection was a major revelation among these finds, a testimony to the tastes and interests of the famous couple, not only through the images themselves but also through the telling annotations inscribed upon them. Photography had always been a part of Kahlo's life-her father Guillermo Kahlo was one of the great Mexican photographers at the beginning of the twentieth century-and her collection constitutes a roll call of great photographers: Man Ray, Brassai, Martin Munkacsi, Pierre Verger, George Hurrel, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Manuel and Lola Alvarez Bravo, Gisele Freund and many others, including Kahlo herself. It is likely that many of the unattributed photographs in the collection were taken by her, though we can only be sure of the few that she decided to sign in 1929. Frida Kahlo: Her Photos allows us to speculate about Kahlo's and Rivera's likes and dislikes, and to document their family origins; it supplies a thrilling and hugely significant addition to our knowledge of Kahlo's life and work. ... Each sticker is about 1.5" W x 2" H, printed on fairly heavy stock, brightly colored and excellent representations of Frida Kahlo's art. I was going to use them to seal envelopes, but I like them so much I'm just keeping them to look at for awhile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great sticker art for the price
I used this lovely sticker book stickers to make some very nice blank cards.I used a dark cardstock (dark green, black, dark blue, dark pink) and was able to make 16 cards.A very practical and multiple use item!A nice item for Kahlo fans.
Great price.I'd like to see a little more variety in this book, and a little more color. These are nice stickers but the theme and color palette are pretty uniform not representative of this artists colorful and rich portfolio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stickers-Great Item
I am a big fan of Frida. The stickers are a perfect addition to my collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be sure you use the "look inside the book" feature
It will show you half of the collection of stickers in this little booklet. The stickers are lovely, but I would have preferred different choices from Frida's paintings. Not bad for the price, though - they'd be a nice addition to a birthday card or as an enclosure with a book of Kahlo's art. ... Read more

Product Description
A magnificent visual book in full color with over 150 photos and notes about the making of the major feature film by the award-winning director (The Lion King, Titus) about one of the most famous artists and feminists in the twentieth century, starring Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina, coming from Miramax Films.

This is the true story of Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera, the larger-than-life painters who became the most acclaimed artists in Mexican history and whose tempestuous love affair, landmark journeys to America, and outrageous personalities made them legendary. Filmed mainly in Mexico, the movie traces Frida's life from her unbridled high school days to her death at age 47.

This vivid book includes production notes, details on cinematography, set and costume design, and visual effects, music, notes by director Taymor, interviews with the cast, excerpts from books about Frida, reproductions of artwork, a historical timeline, and background sketches on the real figures portrayed in the movie. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Frida
Because of this amazing book, I started a journey through Mexico that has changed my life. The life of Frida Kahlo inspired me to learn Spanish, change my teaching postion, and start a non-profit organization.Rarely does a novel infuse itself into one's consciousness, motivating social change.Thank you Ms. Herrera for this priceless treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book with Invaluable Content
Of all of Newmarket's wonderful series of Pictorial Moviebooks, this one is my favorite. The sidebars identifying many of the "real people" who appear in the film are helpful, but the best part is the side-by-side comparison of the paintings & the moments in Frida's life which inspired them. The wedding sequence is especially illuminating: the scene from the shooting script, the stills of Frida [Salma Hayek] examining herself in the mirror in her lace wedding gown, & the picture of the actual wedding painting all combine to reveal Frida's essential self-invention.

If you loved this film, you will definitely want THIS book which supplements BOTH the film & the Herrera biography.

Enhanced with an informative Foreword by Kayden Herrera and with introductions by Julie Taymor and Salma Hayek, Frida: Bringing Frida Kahlo's Life And Art To Film is a superb companion title to Julie Taymor's electrifying and artistic movie "Frida", showcasing the true story of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, the Mexican painters whose acclaimed work and passionate love affair distinguished them during the twentieth century. Featuring full-color photographs on virtually every page which illustrate the screenplay text, as well as interviews with cast and crew members and production notes, Frida is fun to simply page through, a highly recommended addition to academic film libraries, and is a "must-have" acquisition for admirers of the movie celebrating one of the twentieth-century's most remarkable female artists. ... Product Description
Frida Kahlo: Photographs of Myself and Others comprises a cache of rare and never before-published materials from the Vicente Wolf Collection. Few artists have fully captured the public's imagination with the power of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. As an incomparable artist, political activist, and the wife of celebrated muralist Diego Rivera, Kahlo's life was alternately joyous and tragic. This astonishing collection brings together portraits of Kahlo by such luminaries as Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Tina Modotti, Julien Levy, and Lucienne Bloch as well as snapshots of Frida and Diego at work and at home. Selections from the collection have been featured in the major exhibition, Frida Kahlo, organized by the Walker Art Center and later shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This book presents a fresh and captivating look at the iconic artist, her exuberant husband, and their coterie of famous friends. ... Read more
