Product Description

Heartwarming stories that recall Christmases past:

·         O.Henry’s all-American tale, “The Gift of the Magi,” originally published in 1906.

·         Leo Tolstoy’s Russian folktale, “Where Love Is, There God Is Also” from 1887.

·         And Charles Dickens’ little-known classics "The Seven Poor Travellers" and "What Christmas Is As We Grow Older," from 1854 and 1851.

“One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one’s cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas…. She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result. Twenty dollars a week doesn’t go far. Expenses had been greater than she had calculated. They always are. Only $1.87 to buy a present for Jim. Her Jim.” – from the beginning of “The Gift of the Magi”

Product Description
I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil--to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school committee and every one of you will take care of that.

I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks--who had a genius, so to speak, for SAUNTERING, which word is beautifully derived "from idle people who roved about the country, in the Middle Ages, and asked charity, under pretense of going a la Sainte Terre," to the Holy Land, till the children exclaimed, "There goes a Sainte-Terrer," a Saunterer, a Holy-Lander. They who never go to the Holy Land in their walks, as they pretend, are indeed mere idlers and vagabonds; but they who do go there are saunterers in the good sense, such as I mean. Some, however, would derive the word from sans terre without land or a home, which, therefore, in the good sense, will mean, having no particular home, but equally at home everywhere. For this is the secret of successful sauntering. He who sits still in a house all the time may be the greatest vagrant of all; but the saunterer, in the good sense, is no more vagrant than the meandering river, which is all the while sedulously seeking the shortest course to the sea. But I prefer the first, which, indeed, is the most probable derivation. For every walk is a sort of crusade, preached by some Peter the Hermit in us, to go forth and reconquer this Holy Land from the hands of the Infidels.

It is true, we are but faint-hearted crusaders, even the walkers, nowadays, who undertake no persevering, never-ending enterprises. Our expeditions are but tours, and come round again at evening to the old hearth-side from which we set out. Half the walk is but retracing our steps. We should go forth on the shortest walk, perchance, in the spirit of undying adventure, never to return-- prepared to send back our embalmed hearts only as relics to our desolate kingdoms. If you are ready to leave father and mother, and brother and sister, and wife and child and friends, and never see them again--if you have paid your debts, and made your will, and settled all your affairs, and are a free man--then you are ready for a walk.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is not a Boojum
This story is available online -- with the illustrations in a separate section. Still, I wanted a paper version. The text is legible, the edges of the illustrations are "rubbed" a bit, but that's forgivable.

The notes, introductions, etc., are not half of the book, like they are in the updated edition. This is the perfect version for those who want the story without excessive extras. ... Read more

Product Description
'The charm of certain vacant grassy spaces, in Italy, overfrowned by masses of brickwork that are honeycombed by the suns of centuries, is something that I hereby renounce once for all the attempt to express; but you may be sure that whenever I mention such a spot enchantment lurks in it' - Henry James. In these essays on travels in Italy written from 1872 to 1909, Henry James explores art and religion, political shifts and cultural revolutions, and the nature of travel itself. James' enthusiastic appreciation of the unparalleled aesthetic allure of Venice, the vitality of Rome, and the noisy, sensuous appeal of Naples is everywhere marked by pervasive regret for the disappearance of the past and by ambivalence concerning the transformation of nineteenth-century Europe.John Auchard's lively introduction and extensive notes illuminate the surprising differences between the historical, political, and artistic Italy of James' travels and the metaphoric Italy that became the setting of some of his best-known works of fiction. This edition includes an appendix of James' book reviews on Italian travel-writing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book with a view...
The films 'Room With a View' and 'Wings of the Dove' make one wonder about the Italy reflected in classical paintings executed before the destruction of WWII. My curiousity was heightened in an art history class when the instructor showed a photo slide of the Ponte Vecchio and told the amazingstory of the Nazi pilot who disobeyed orders to destroy the last bridge theallies could cross on their advance north.

This beautiful book bringsto mind the saying, "The Past is a Foreign Country." Italy of the19th Century is a place none of us can know except through records left byone who witnessed it. The book consists of essays James wrote on histravels to various places in Italy including Venice, Rome, and Florence. Hevisited some places several times and the text reflects the changes heobserved on revisits.

He records an Italy whose poverty for a timeprevented the intrusion of developers, who later made many changes perhapsfor the worse.James was not a worshipper of old buildings, he appreciatedthem, but he was also aware of the suffering of the Italians, many of whomexisted in dire poverty. His reflections on various cathedrals, churchesand other objects of artistic interest are humanized by his comments aboutthe individuals he encounters. He muses on the morality of travel,"whether it has been worthwhile to leave his home[and] encounter newforms of human suffering."His awareness of the Italians themselvesmakes his writing a bit like that of Paul Theroux, a travler and writer inour times.James differs from Theroux however. My sense is that James is alittle less likely to criticize and a little more willing to overlookunpleasantness. Perhaps that makes him less of a realist, or perhaps Italywas a more pleasant place in the 19th Century. ... Read more
