Product Description
Always on the move - he was brought up in Lima and worked in Paris and Brittany - Paul Gauguin left France for good in 1891 to settle in Tahiti. The canvases he sent back were to have a profound influence on 20th-century art; their revolutionary use of brilliant pure colour and rejection of naturalism were an inspiration to a generation of younger artists, from Matisse to Picasso. Indispensible to an understanding of this complex man and the artistic, commercial and personal pressures that drove him, are his own letters and other writings, which contain explanations of pictures that meant a great deal to him and what he was trying to achieve in his work, and evocative descriptions of Tahitian life. This is a collection of extracts from Gauguin's correspondence - to his wife in Denmark, his agent in Paris and his friends, including Strindberg and Van Gogh - and from his journals "Noa Noa" and "Avant et Apres". The extracts are juxtaposed with illustrations of his oil paintings, watercolours and letter sketches. ... Read more

Product Description
This second book in the new Art Encounters series centers on Paul Gauguin's painting Landscape with Peacocks, or Matamoe, and recreates the world the artist found in Tahiti when he painted the picture in 1892. This action-packed South Sea adventure is about a young sailor, Joe Sloan, and his mission to avenge the death of his friend, Robert. Joe searches for Robert's girlfriend, a Tahitian girl named Tehane, to deliver the sad news personally. He doesn't have to go far before fate reunites him with his friend's killer, the Marquesan warrior, Gun, and his evil master, a man known as the White Wolf. As Joe navigates the unknown territory of Tahiti and its people, he finds an unlikely ally in French artist Paul Gauguin. In the course of the story, readers are introduced to Gauguin and his work, the artist's relationships with the Tahitian natives, and his artistic temperament. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It
This is such a masterfully written book.Even apart from the fact that it is based on historical events (interesting enough!), I thought the story worked so well as just a damn good story. If you have any interest at all in Paul Gauguin (or even if you don't!), I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This splendid celebration of the illustrated book as an art form begins with remarkable works produced in France by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Gauguin at the end of the 19th century, and traces the international development of the modern illustrated book to the last decade of the 20th century. Major artists of the modern movement, among them Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, turned to the "illumination" of poems, classical literature, and their own writings to make books that are now collectors' objects, luxuriously produced. Such limited editions have continued to be produced alongside other types of artists' books aimed at a much larger audience. The more available artists' books have served a different purpose, often expressing aesthetic and political principles, in the hands of such artists as Kasimir Malevich, Marcel Duchamp, Ed Ruscha, Joseph Beuys, and Barbara Kruger. Accompanying texts consider the historical background, complex relationships between artists and book manufacturers, technical constraints, and recent changes.
