Jahrhunderts gehörte Thomas Gainsborough mit zu den gefragtesten Malern Englands. Angehörige des Adels, des englischen Ho-fes und namhafte Politiker sahen es als ein Muß an, sich von ihm porträ-tieren zu lassen und rühmten sein malerisches Können. Sogar König George der Dritte und seine Frau Königin Charlotte ließen bei ihm Porträts anfertigen.Obwohl Gainsborough vorwiegend durch den Zweig der Porträtmalerei bekannt wurde, galt seine eigentliche Leidenschaft der Landschaftsmalerei und des Musizierens. Allerdings muß festgehalten werden, daß das Porträtieren für einen Maler seiner Zeit der erträglichste Wirtschaftszweig war. So sah er sich in sei-nem Berufsfeld sowohl als Geschäftsmann und als auch als Künstler in einem.Das Gemälde „Mr. and Mrs. Andrews" aus dem Jahre 1748/49 stellt einerseits ein Experiment dar, reale Landschaftsmalerei und Porträts in einem Bildnis zu verknüpfen. Bevor allerdings näher auf dieses Bildnis eingegangen werden kann, wird zu Beginn in einem kurzen Exkurs auf Englands politische Vormachtstellung und gesellschaftliche Umwälzungen hingewiesen.Die Topographie ließ die englischen Landschaftsmaler nicht los. Unter den Landschaftsmalern des 18. Jahrhunderts nimmt Thomas Gainsborough eine herausragende Position ein.
