Actually, I would say four stars and a half!
This book is surprising. It doesn't quite have the format of a traditionnal art book, but it is an excellent book. I own many books on Chagall and this one was truly a great surprise! I would compare it withthe book "Chagall: The art of dreams" by Daniel Marchesseaubecause both are like mini-encyclopeadias about the artist. The differenceis that this one by Monica Bohm-Duchen is bigger, and I would say easier toread ( each page of Marchesseau's book is literaly loaded with informationand pictures! ). The quality of the illustrations is superb, and theinformation on Chagall's life is never boring and hard to understand forpeople like me who doesn't really have big knowledge on art. This book draws a comparison between two of the most prominent Jewish artists in the twentieth-century: Polish-born magician story-teller Isaac Bashevis-Singer (1904-1991) and Russian-born creator of visual magic Marc Chagall (1887-1985). In addition to their East European Jewish background both were exposed to Western culture. Chagall absorbed such turn-of-the-century avant-garde styles as Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Abstract Art, Surrealism; from these he created a unique blend, to which he brought the various Russian influences he had absorbed and his own special highly imaginative and inventive personal style. Bashevis-Singer brought to his works philosophical, psychological, scientific, medical and legal knowledge. While both artists were affected by these Western influences, they remained firmly entrenched within the Jewish culture - the Yiddish language and life in the 'shtetl' - from which they drew their inspiration. Their world consisted of a special blend of reality and dream, realism and fantasy. Ruth Dorot demonstrates that they shared, albeit unwittingly, a common 'meta-realistic' style combining the earthly with the supernatural and the transcendental.Their works allude to real place names, dates, facts and historical events; but at the same time contain occult forces, angels, demons, mysticism and mystery. Richard Francis Burton was essentially the first to produce an unexpurgated translation of this wonderful book of tales.Though Burton's English is often excessively stilted, Jack Zipes has quite handily adapted(and condensed from the original 10 volumes) this magical grouping ofstories, as told by the enchanting Scheherazade, who tells the nightlytales to save her own life.A classic and must have for anyone's library. ... I love Chagall but...
A couple good prints and drawings but nothing overall to really recommend it except the price.
But since I love Chagall I can handle it. But if you really want something decent first go to the library and page through everything you can before you buy. Art Museums also are a great source to pick a winner. Art books can get very pricey so it is best to look around if you can beforehand. Once you find ones you want Amazon can be the best spot to get a real bargain. ... Read more

Those of you who have had the chance to see the book "Chagall" by Jacob Baal-Teshuva (or to own it!) from TASCHEN editors will absolutely want to buy this set of postcards! And what is really cool is that theytook probably the most beautiful reproductions of the book to create thosepostcards! I think about "The joy of the village", which isprobably one of the most wonderful painting of Chagall. The postcards arequite big and perfect to put in a small frame.
