Product Description

Published on the centenary of the death of Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), this stunning book celebrates the artist’s depictions of his native Provence. While Cézanne is recognized as one of the fathers of the modern movement, this publication focuses on his own sense of achievement, especially as a painter exploring the landscape in and around his hometown of Aix-en- Provence. Although he spent time elsewhere in France, especially Paris, Cézanne repeatedly returned to Provence, where he lived nearly all of the last twenty years of his life.

In studios at the Jas de Bouffan and at Les Lauves, and on painting expeditions into the surrounding countryside, Cézanne created some of his most original and compelling works, not only landscapes but also portraits of  local characters, friends, and family; still lifes, and imaginative figure paintings, such as the monumental bathers painted in the last decade of his life.

Beautifully illustrated with some 160 paintings and watercolors, Cézanne in Provence offers fascinating insights into a true genius in the history of art and his beloved native countryside.

Product Description

Paul Cézanne remains one of the world's most beloved Impressionist painters. His works are among the most popular at major museums around the world, and visitors flock each year to Aix-en-Provence, where the garden at his home and studio in Les Lauves remains meticulously maintained to honor his memory.

Now in Cézanne's Garden, award-winning garden writer and photographer Derek Fell offers a groundbreaking approach to the study of the man and his art. Setting images of Cézanne's paintings against breathtaking photographs of his garden as it exists today, Fell offers fresh insight into the man, his art, and the natural world that inspired him. Readers will see how Cézanne's unusual garden -- a wooded landscape layered with brilliant greens and punctuated by strong structural elements -- reflects the artist's innovative theories on color, texture, structure, and light.

Using Cézanne's own letters and the musings of painters who knew him, Fell draws an astonishing portrait of this socially awkward, hardworking man, complete with his favorite outdoor motifs, his favorite still-life subjects, and even his favorite flower: scabiosa. As he traces the development of the artist's career, Fell takes readers on a tour of gardens from Cézanne's early life -- the Jas de Bouffan on his family's estate and the nearby Château Noir -- as well as from his adult years, namely his garden and studio at Les Lauves, showing how it was then and how it stands now.For the practicing gardener, Fell also shows how to create a Cézanne-like garden of one's own, including how to create favorite Cézanne motifs such as vertical gardens and leaf tunnels.

Beautifully illustrated with more than one hundred original photographs and a dozen Cézanne masterpieces, Cézanne's Garden is a revealing look -- using art, photography, and reflection -- at one of the world's most cherished artists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Grand Tour of an Artist's Inspiring Gardens
Cezanne was a remarkable artist who spanned the gap between Impressionism and Abstract Art.To me his best work was in his landscapes and still life paintings. The former were usually inspired by gardens at the Jas de Bouffan, Chateau Noir, and his own garden at Les Lauves in Aix-en-Provence, as well as the natural garden of nearby Mount Sainte-Victorire. Cezanne's garden and studio have been restored and can be easily visited.

Dereck Fell has captured the spirit of place evoked by Cezanne's garden, and other, similar gardens, as well as the beautiful French countryside in "Cezanne's Garden." This is one of a series on the gardens of Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. Derek Fell is a well-published garden writer-photographer and he has certainly captured the spirit of Cezanne in the wonderful color photographs and insightful commentary that fill this book. One is left with a better appreciation of Cezanne and his world and a great appreciation of the "natural" gardens of the period. This is a side of Cezanne that is not much discussed in art history books, but to me it is an essential part of understanding the artist. While Monet's garden is often mentioned (how can one ignore the inspiration for his water lily series or the Japanese bridge!) other artists of the period were also avid gardeners who, like Monet, often drew their subject matter from their gardens and those of others. Each of these gardens had their own flavor, with Cezanne's in part taking on some dark overtones of the macabre, decay and sexuality.

A wonderful glimpse into the personal world of the artist Cezanne! ... Read more

Product Description
Michael Doran has gathered texts by contemporaries of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906)--including artists, critics, and writers--that illuminate the influential painter's philosophy of art especially in his late years. The book includes historically important essays by a dozen different authors, including Emile Bernard, Joaquim Gasquet, Maurice Denis, and Ambroise Vollard, along with selections from Cézanne's own letters.
In addition to the material included in the original French edition of the book, which has also been published in German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese, this edition contains an introduction written especially for it by noted Cézanne scholar Richard Shiff. The book closes with Lawrence Gowing's magisterial essay, "The Logic of Organized Sensations," first published in 1977 and long out of print.
Cézanne's work, and the thinking that lay behind it, have been of inestimable importance to the artists who followed him. This gathering of writings will be of enormous interest to artists, writers, art historians--indeed to all students of modern art. ... Read more

Paul Cézanne

Paul Cézanne(19 January 1839 – 22 October 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painterwhose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. Cézanne can be said to form the bridge between late 19th century Impressionismand the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. The line attributed to both Matisse and Picasso that Cézanne "is the father of us all" cannot be easily dismissed.

Cézanne's work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, composition and draftsmanship. His often repetitive, sensitive and exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields, at once both a direct expression of the sensations of the observing eye and an abstraction from observed nature. The paintings convey Cézanne's intense study of his subjects, a searching gaze and a dogged struggle to deal with the complexity of human visual perception.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Easy Mountain to Climb
This book breathes life into so many famous names from the Impressionist years of the 19th century, and the places where they lived, worked and squabbled together. Where more conventional biographies seem somehow dry and dusty, the novel-style of this book seems strangely more real! An excellent read, but do have a good book illustratedwith Cezanne's paintings to back it up, and preferably the Impressionists as well. Not that the information is inaccurate: it is simply frustrating to be unable to see some of the references. But then, that is the joy of this book: it throws Cezanne and his contemporaries together again into a living landscape, and makes the reader want to meet them and visit these places.

Sadly out of print, this should be republished, perhaps with an illustrated version. ... Read more

Product Description
Cézanne's painting The Eternal Feminine, painted in 1878, has been given considerable attention in the literature on this artist, though it has generally embarrassed scholars because it suggests aspects of the artist's personality that many connoisseurs in the past would rather have repressed. The painting has been known by a variety of titles and, as Wayne Andersen has discovered, has also been altered. He traced these alterations to an art dealer who made them in an effort to render the painting more marketable. This volume is the first to interrogate the original state of The Eternal Feminine and to resolve its mysterious importance to Cézanne and, more broadly, the history of art. Devoting a separate chapter to each of the titles by which the picture has been known, Andersen resolves its hidden meaning while providing a fresh look at Cézanne's artistic process. ... Read more

Product Description
Cézanne and the Dawn of Modern Art presents selected paintings by Paul Cézanne alongside works by younger artists that reveal the powerful influence of the man hailed as the founder of modern painting. The driving forces in the reception of Cézanne's art were not art critics, art historians, or even the artist himself, but rather other artists--primarily the Fauves led by Matisse, de Vlaminck, and Derain; and the Cubists including Picasso, Braque, and Léger--all of whom absorbed and elaborated on Cézanne's revolutionary ideas about color and composition.

Against this background of Cézannisme, the book presents key works by Cézanne and younger artists in revealing juxtapositions. Readers will discover analogies and variations between the works of the "father of modern art" and those of his successors in a series of related motifs--portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. This volume is, indeed, a compact history of the icons of modern art. It offers new insight into one of modern art's most complex artists, traces the influence of Cézanne's work on a succeeding generation of 20th-century artists, and examines tendencies in Cézanne's art that paved the way for both the Fauve and Cubist movements. From the moment he begins to put down a stroke, the painting is already there. -Pablo Picasso on Paul CézanneEdited by Felix A. 5-0 out of 5 stars Should be in any art lover's bookcollection!
As this book will prove to anyone who doubts it, Paul Cezanne is definitely the Father of Modern Art.Of course, that is ironic because Cezanne was said to be against many of the principles of modern art.

That said, this book is a wonderful source for art history lovers like me.There are many beautiful reproductions of paintings in this book, spanning Cezanne's entire career, that are ALL IN COLOR.And that makes the book quite a gem on its own account. However, not only are the paintings in color, but also since this is a tall, wide book, the paintings take up a page, even a whole page, if need be.The book also explores Cezanne's personality--how it affected his art, as well as his life.It is not serious reading, by it will enable one to better appreciate his art more. This book, despite only being $..., is priceless. It will probably be worth much more in coming years. There is no excuse not to buy this book if you love art history--I know you'll enjoy it immensely!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Introduction
This book is a fine introduction to this great artist. The reproductions of the paintings are superb. One thing I really like is that although the author supplies many useful (and jargon free) comments and observations about the Cezanne's life and work, the author also lets the artist speak for himself through choice selections of his writings. I understand what Cezanne was doing better now. It makes a good gift book too as it is very accessible and not very long.

3-0 out of 5 stars More biography than painting
This book is well illustrated for the cost of the volume, but it is more of a biography than a book on paintings. It is also well written in readable prose, but the pace of the narrative is broken up by the fact that the illustrations rarely correspond to the place in the text where they are discussed, requiring a fair bit of page flipping. This could have been easily remedied by the publisher.Furthermore, many of the illustrations provided are not discussed at all, or only mentioned in passing. Nevertheless, several key aspects of Cezanne's approach and influence are briefly mentioned, and the text can be enjoyably read in an afternoon. These comments refer to the hardbound edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great series!!What a great book!!
This is the second book I have from the Pegasus Library and I am impressed yet again with the high quality of this book.I love art books, but finding books with high quality images and interesting text is sometimes difficult given my limited price range. This book on Cezanne comes with a commentary which I found better written and more informative than many of the essays found in the huge tomes which seem to dominate the art book world. But every art lover knows the commentary is but a distant concern compared with the quality of the images themselves. The reproductions in this book are bright and clear, crisp enough to see the details, but not unfaithful to the originals.I could go on and on, but I will stop...in short, buy this book! ... Product Description
PAUL CÉZANNE (1839-1906) is an important figure in the progress of modern European painting. In his dedicated concern with form and structure, he stands apart from the mainstream of Impressionist painting, extending its range into a new art of visual analysis.
Cézanne, sensitive and shy, shunned the Parisian café society of his fellow artists, preferring to live and work alone in his native Provence which provided the inspiration for so many of his paintings.Less immediately appealing to a wider audience than, for example, Monet and Degas, Cézanne is nonetheless of immense importance through the influence he exerted on so many of the artists who followed him, such as Picasso and Matisse.
Blessed with financial independence through the efforts of his banker father, he fortunately enjoyed a freedom to pursue his art without the demands of making a living felt by so many of his fellow artists. ... Read more

Product Description
In the voluminous scholarship that's been written on Paul Cézanne, little has been said about the twenty-four portraits in oil that Cézanne made of his wife, Hortense Fiquet Cézanne, over an extended twenty-year period. In Cézanne's Other: The Portraits of Hortense, Susan Sidlauskas breaks new ground, focusing on these paintings as a group and looking particularly at the differences that render many of them unrecognizable as the same person. She argues that Cézanne sidestepped the conventional goals of portraiture-he avoids representing a consistent, identifiable physiognomy or conventional feminine postures and does not portray the subject's inner life-making lack of fixedness itself his subject, which leads him ultimately to a radical reformulation of modern portraiture. Sidlauskas also upends the notion of Mme Cézanne as the irrelevant and absent spouse. Instead she reveals Hortense Fiquet Cézanne as a presence so crucial to the artist that she became the essential "other" to his ever-evolving "self." Coupling historical texts from philosophy, psychology, and physiology with more recent writings from women's and gender studies, cognitive psychology, and visual culture, Sidlauskas demonstrates that Mme Cézanne offered intimacy at arm's length for the painter who has been dubbed "the lone wolf of Aix." ... Product Description
Paul Cezanne, perhaps more than any Impressionist, felt1 an attachment to his birthplace that would endure throughout his lifetime. From the farmhouse where he was raised at Jas de Bouffan to his final home at Lauves, his native region of Provence would provide both the creative and physical sustenance necessary to fuel his unique artistic vision. In a letter, Cezanne once wrote of Provence, "When you are born there, you're done for. Nothing else is appealing."

And so he spent most of his life there, taking long walks in the country, hunting, camping, and, of course, painting all that this beautiful area of France has to offer: the strange Chateau-Noir, the undisturbed silence of the Bibemus quarry, and the majestic Mont Sainte-Victoire, which would become a recurring theme in Cezanne's paintings. When not out wandering the Provencal countryside, Cezanne often brought nature inside in the form of apples, pears, peaches, oranges, and other fruit that he painted as still fifes.

As beloved as Provence was to Cezanne, so too were his favorite Provencal dishes. Although he once claimed that his favorite meal was "potatoes in oil," he enjoyed a variety of foods prepared by his mother and later by his cook, Madame Bremond. Fifty of these special recipes are included in this book, attesting to the simple and bounteous Provencal cuisine that Cezanne held so dear.

Authors Jacqueline Saulnier and Gilles Plazy fondly revive Cezanne's Provence by concentrating on the painter's life and career at his four main Provencal addresses. Special attention is given to the cuisine that is brought temptingly to life by internationally renowned photographer Jean-Bernard Naudin's full-color photographs. Images of Provence, Cezanne's paintings, and recreations of his still lifes add to the extraordinary beauty of a book to be treasured for its portrait of the artist, his home, and his way of life. ...
