Product Description

Often regarded as merely the creator of sentimental images of mothers and children or an expatriate heavily influenced by Impressionism, Mary Cassatt is not typically regarded as an artist of radical convictions. In Eve's Daughter/Modern Woman, Sally Webster reevaluates these dismissals with a historical, aesthetic, and symbolist analysis of Cassatt's unique venture into the male-dominated realm of large-scale mural painting, Modern Woman.

Commissioned for the Woman's Building at Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, Modern Woman also stood as a personal and professional manifesto. This book undertakes a complete overview of Cassatt's mural, synthesizing a wide variety of interpretations and original observations to present the first complete treatment of the work. Webster connects the symbolism of the painting to Cassatt's life as a woman artist and a member of the Parisian avant-garde, and to the history of woman's emancipation. She ends with a detective story as she joins the hunt to unravel the mystery of the now-missing mural, last known to be in the possession of Mrs. Potter Palmer (of Chicago's Palmer House family).

5-0 out of 5 stars Art for kids and adults
The books suggest this series for infants to 3, but we find that our 3 yr. old grandson responds better now than when he was younger. We love these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Right
Finally, a children's art book that is printed well. Most kids art books are printed on cheap paper and full of cartoons. They miss the point.Visual Art is all about the nuances of color and light. That means glossy paper and good print job. This book goes beyond that - it is bound on carboard with smudge proof coatings.Perfect for small hands.

Important!Kids need to be exposed to art before they enter the verbal world of school where visual skills and gifts are not only ignored - they are punished.Open their hearts to the emotion and freedom of visual expression early, and keep it up despite the verbal limitations of public school.Your visual kids need it for their soul as well as their creativity. And, even though the schools don't know it, or forgot it, kids exposed to art will do better in all other disciplines. For the kind of perfected art in these books is the result of hard work and self discipline as well as skill, inspiration and creativity. ... Product Description
Via paintings, prints, and pastels created by Mary Cassatt throughout her career, this book explores the main facets of feminine life--solitary, social, public, and intimate--and offers an intriguing look into the world of women in the late 19th century. 50 color photos. 10 archival prints.Amazon.com Review
For readers who are looking for an instructive first glance oran introduction to Mary Cassatt, this book is perfect. Themedium-sized volume contains a biography of Cassatt by art historianDebra Mancoff and also offers reproductions that are surprisinglylarge and clear. These plates give readers as accurate a view as ispossible in a book of Cassatt's virtuoso brushwork, sure-handed lines, and soft, deep aquatints.

Mancoff includes many of the artist's piquant remarks (as well asquotes from her friends and acquaintances, who found Cassatt oftencharming, always impressive, and sometimes "slashing" in heroutspokenness). Upon seeing Degas's work for the first time, Cassattflattened her nose against the window of the shop where they wereshown, "to absorb all I could."When Degas urged her to exhibit withthe impressionists instead of in the stuffy, official French salon, she "accepted with joy," she wrote."I hated conventional art. Ibegan to live." Mancoff has a nice touch with details, and her bookshould be just right for anyone who wants to learn more about thisgifted and ambitious artist. The long, enriched captions for theplates are like the tape-recorded tours that accompany majorexhibitions. They give the reader enough historical and criticalbackground to make the works of art as meaningful aspossible. --Peggy Moorman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reproductions, good text, great price
This book supplies excellent reproductions of most of Mary Cassat's most famous paintings. Having seen the original of the cover painting in the Art Institute in Chicago, I can say the often distorted color tones are accurately photographed here.

The text is a very readable discussion of how Mary Cassat's paintings reflect women's lives in the late nineteenth century. Those looking for more painterly criticism--composition, palatte, influences, brush-work, etc. will not find much of that in this book. As Digby Baltzell wrote in his "Puritan Boston, Quaker Philadelphia," by 1900 American painting was dominated by John Singer Sergeant, Cecilia Beaux, and Mary Cassat, all of whom shared a Yankee background (mixed with French for Cassat and Beaux), connections in Philadelphia, extensive European experience, and a firm place in the social elite. Without idealization or false nostalgia, Debra Mancoff shares Mary Cassat's loving regard for the importance of the feminine side of this world of gentility.

Did I say it was a great deal? If good reproductions in a solid hardback binding of a great painter's oeuvre are what you are looking for this is a very good buy. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), the American-born Impressionist, was captivated by the challenges and artistic possibilities of making prints. These works were a central part of her discipline as a draughtsman, allowing her to focus on the essentials of form, gesture, and expression. During Cassatt's extended residence in France, Ambroise Vollard, the cutting-edge dealer in Paris best known for his appreciation and promotion of the works of Cezanne and Picasso, was stunned by the vitality and modern vision of her works on paper. In particular, Vollard was fascinated by the sequential development of the prints, which provided an extraordinary visual record of her creative process. Vollard later acquired Cassatt's entire collection of her prints and drawings, most of which had never been exhibited. These works remained in his holdings until his death in 1939, when they were acquired by the distinguished French dealer and collector, Henri M. Petiet. Part of this trove of works was finally brought to light in 2000 by Marc Rosen Fine Art, Ltd. in the ground-breaking exhibition "Mary Cassatt: Prints and Drawings from the Artist's Studio" held at Adelson Galleries. Another aspect of her artistic experimentation was displayed in the 2004 exhibition, "Art in the Mirror: The Counterproofs of Mary Cassatt," which presented previously unknown pastel transfers.

The full depth of this astonishing cache of Cassatt's graphic works is revealed in the final exhibition of this series, "Cassatt from the Collection of Vollard: Prints and Drawings." The exhibition and this accompanying catalogue include nearly 100 etchings, aquatints, and a group of important early drawings, which reveal the range of the artist's creative process and add to our understanding of her innovative approach to art. Of particular interest are the works dealing with the artit's central themes addressing the place of women in society and her unsentimental representations of women with children. In addition to the illustrations the catalogue includes a foreword by Warren Adelson, an introduction by Marc Rosen, and essays by Nancy Mowll Mathews and Sarah Bertalan. ... Read more

Product Description
Mary Cassatt always wanted to be an artist. But to reach her goal, she had to overcome many barriers. At the time Mary lived, people frowned on girls from wealthy families having a career. Her parents did not want her living the "odd" life they thought artists lived. Few art schools even accepted girls and women as students. And the "art world" held one idea of what paintings should be but Mary had a different idea. After much travel, study, and hard work, she won over her parents and the critics. Today Mary Cassatt's "impressionist" paintings hang in the best museums and collections throughout the world. She helped change attitudes that for so long kept women from their dreams. She even played a part in winning for women the right to vote. This book is written for 8 and up readers. There are over 20 color pictures of her paintings for you to enjoy. ... Read more

Product Description
One of the greatest--and most popular--of the Impressionists, Mary Cassatt created some of her most inventive and appealing images in the print medium. Documenting a startling new discovery, this exquisitely produced book unveils 204 major prints and drawings that have been sequestered in a private collection for nearly half a century.

Sometime before 1914, as Cassatt neared the end of her career, she was coaxed into selling her "studio collection"--etchings, monotypes, color aquatints, and drawings that she had kept for sentimental or archival purposes--to the dealer Ambroise Vollard. He added a few pieces to the collection from other notable Cassatt fans, including her friend Edgar Degas. When World War I disrupted the art market, Vollard tucked this remarkable collection away and never exhibited it before his death on the eve of World War II. The entire group was acquired by a French collector, who showed only a few works to friends and selected members of the art community.

Many of the prints, which are in pristine condition, are previously unknown variants of Cassatt's work; others have never before been seen in any version. Because Cassatt's output as a printmaker was quite small and because her color prints are praised for being among her most radically innovative works, this discovery is an extraordinary event in an art world where demand for Cassatt's art seems insatiable.

The catalogue section of the book documents in exacting detail and in superb illustrations the 41 color prints, 127 black-and-white prints, and 36 drawings that constitute what is now known as the studio collection. Essays by leading experts tell the story of this rare collection and explore Cassatt's virtuosity as a printmaker. The result is an important and unusually beautiful publication that will intensify interest in this much-loved artist and stimulate a new appreciation of her significant contributions to modern printmaking. ...
