As well as painting, he worked as an engraver, wood-carver, ironsmith, architect, journalist, playwright, composer, singer, and actor. He was also a pioneer producer/director of British silent films, with his own studio at Bushey, Hertfordshire. He later became professor of fine art at Oxford (188994). His portrait paintings included those of Wagner, Ruskin, and Lord Kelvin. He was knighted in 1907.

Extractions: Hubert Herkomer was born in Bavaria. His father, a wood-carver emigrated to Southampton when Hubert was a child. He attended the South Kensington Schools from 1866, and studied under Luke Fildes. Herkomer produced engravings for the Graphic magazine, early in his career. He worked in a variety of areas, particularly social realism, including the famous paintings On Strike, and Hard Times, illustrating the inhumanity shown towards employees by both farmers and industrial employers at that time. Herkomer was a very successful, and versatile individual. He produced many portraits, some of them of male sitters being a little short of inspiration and flair. In truth this was less his fault than the requirements of the sitters to look sombre, serious, and dignified. He became ARA in 1879, and a full Academician in 1890. In 1899 Herkomer was en-nobled by Kaiser Wilhelm 11 (1859-1941), becoming a von, which he always added to his name thereafter. He was knighted in 1908. He built a grandiose Victorian house in Bushey, Hertfordshire, named Lululand, after his second wife who was killed rescuing a child from a road accident. At Lululand, Herkomer had his own theatre, where he produced plays, and his own operas.

Extractions: HERIOT, by derivation the arms and equipment (geatwa) of a soldier or army (here); the 0. Eng. word is thus here-geatwa. The lord of a fee provided his, tenant with arms and a horse, either as a gift or loan, which he was to use in the military service paid by him. On the death of the tenant the lord claimed the return of the equipment. When by the 10th century land was being given instead of arms, the heriot was still paid, but more in the nature of a relief (q.v.). There seems to have been some connexion between the payment of the heriot and the power of making a will (F. W. Maitland, Domesday Book and Beyond, p. 298). By the 13th century the payment was made either in money or in kind by the handing over of the best beast or of the best other chattel of the tenant (see Pollock and Maitland, History of English Law, i. 270 sq.). For the manorial law relating to heriots, see COPYHOLD. HERISAU, the largest town in the entire Swiss canton of Appenzell, built on the Glatt torrent, and by light railway 7 m. south-west of St Gall or 134 m. north of Appenzell. In 1900 it had 13,497 inhabitants, mainly Protestant and Germanspeaking. The lower portion of the massive tower of the parish church (Protestant) dates from the 11th century or even earlier. It is a prosperous little industrial town in the Ausser Rhoden half of the canton, especially busied with the manufacture of embroidery by machinery, and of muslins. Near it is the goats whey cure establishment of Heinrichsbad, and the two castles of Rosenberg and Rosenburg, ruined in 1403 when the land rose against its lord, the abbot of St Gall. About 5 m. to the south-east is Hundwil, a village of 1523 inhabitants, where the Lands gemeinde of Ausser Rhoden meets in the odd years (in other years at Trogen) on the last Sunday in April.
