Extractions: Thayer was an amateur naturalist and a passionate bird-lover. He believed that his professional training in color, value, and design, combined with observation of nature, gave him the tools to understand how animals disguise themselves from predators. He devoted considerable time and energy to defining, promoting, and defending his ideas on the subject. Thayer developed a love for the mountain that overlooked his studio. Through his efforts to protect the forests on the slopes of Mount Monadnock he became a staunch conservationist. To support that work, he founded the Thayer Fund which, through the National Audubon Society, paid for wardens to protect bird sanctuaries up and down the east coast.

Extractions: A few years back I saw a few paintings by Abbott Thayer during a museum visit, and I seem to remember reading that he was a camouflage artist. But, now I can't even find mention of him in my general art books. Any suggestions? Dear Visitor, You have a good memory. Abbott Thayer had a lifelong interest in nature and developed a theory of camouflage that was used by the military. "Thayer developed a theory of natural camouflage in animals, which appears in its most complete form in the book Concealing-Coloration in the Animal Kingdom (1909), nominally written by his son Gerald. Interspersed in the text are illustrations of various animals, which demonstrate their invisibility under certain environmental conditions. Thayer's precepts were challenged by some scientists and by Theodore Roosevelt, but his research brought the issue of camouflage before the public, and some of his theories were put to military use during World War II." Extractions: Angels and Ideal Figures Thayer's angels are his best-known paintings. As one art critic mused: "They come near to us, there is a lovely hint of the human and intimate in them, yet they are not of the earth." Thayer made no attempt to explain these enigmatic figures, saying only that the wings were meant to lift the figure out of the commonplace. Yet for him these winged figures had personal meaning. The first angel was a portrait of his daughter Mary, painted in 1887 at the time of his wife's illness. His later angels appear as protective figures hovering over the landscape that Thayer worked so hard to safeguard. During the same period, Thayer painted some of America's most alluring images of women. Some evoke classical mythology; others seem to step out of the Renaissance. These ideal figures represent a golden age, uncontaminated by the materialist world.

Extractions: Jaybird by Rex Burress Some of our bird friends are full time residents that stay in the community year in and year out, enduring whatever whim of weather that nature gives us. One of those stay-at-homes is the scrub jay that occupies the thickets in the Feather River landscape as well as the canyons of the Oakland hills and nearly all the land in-between mountain and ocean. I saw a lone jay on a cool May morning down by the Feather River, sitting on a branch in a spot of sun, but after I stopped to study its coloration, there was a dash for the nearest thicket where the nervous bird could hide. Like many brush birds, jays are constantly shifting about, as if to pose a difficult target for a passing predator, and many, like the kingfisher, green heron, as well as the jay, don't like to be watched. You see the hardy Aphelocoma coerulescensthe blue oneflash from a thicket, sometimes shrieking loudly like all jay species are prone to do. Its call of alarm often warms other animals that some dangerous creature is entering the forest. The Eastern Blue Jay, known for its dark chest "V" pattern and lovely blue...the first bird Roger Tory Peterson painted...is especially vocal, even in the winter woods where their raucous call disturbs the cold silent forest. They manage to make a living even where snow covers the ground, and, like the colorful cardinal, brighten the somber season. Owls and crows might dislike their noisy proclamations, however, and even the fox and the fox hunter feel the thrust of those shrill revelations.

Extractions: Capital Culture FOUR BLOCKS NORTH of the main tourist attractions on the Washington Mall lies a cultural gem no Scorpion reader visiting the anti-nation's capital should miss. The National Museum of American Art along with the National Portrait Gallery, is housed in the Old Patent Building. The main entrance is located on F Street between 7th and 9th Streets. The building itself is of historical and architectural interest, being a Greek Revivial building, "temple of the useful arts", begun in 1836. The principle enticement for a vist, however, will be found on the second floor of the N.M.A.A. Here are exhibited numerous works of nineteenth and early twentieth century art which explicitly celebrates Northern European aesthetics. The second half of the nineteeth century and the early years of this century can now be viewed as the latest (hopefully not the last) efflorescence of Northern civilization. Nordic societies were at a high water mark of power, wealth and knowledge vis- -vis the rest of mankind. They were in the midst of a technical-industrial revolution at home which provided the impetus to complete the settlement of two continents (North America and Australia) and the exploration of another (Antartica). Expansiveness of spirit was in part a cause and in part a result of the physical and material advancement of the race. Nordics of this era generally felt a consciousness of kind, a pride in the present and a faith in the future. The psychological environment animated most Northern artists of the day to extol traditional Western aesthetics in their creations.
