Extractions: Byam Shaw carried the torch of Pre-Raphaelitism across the turn of the century, a period when books and exhibitions had renewed interest in the Brotherhood's work. In his paintings he revived the Brotherhood 's use of bright, pure glazes and restated their belief of the importance of truth and sincerity in art. Moreover, he turned to literature and history for inspiration. Literary allusions and elaborate symbolism were used to great effect by William Holman Hunt in his The Awakening Conscience to reveal some of the more pressing social problems of the age. . Extractions: Shaw was born in India but completed his education at St John's Wood Art School in England. He graduated to the Royal Academy Schools in 1890 and became the leading figure in a London-based group of watercolourists, known as the 'label school' because of their characteristic signature of a trompe l'oeil cartouche. An exhibition of Shaw's work at the Royal Academy in 1898 showed his very personal and stylized Pre-Raphaelite technique, interweaved with a distinct Art Nouveau influence. Shaw was greatly influenced by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and works such as The Blessed Damozel were based on poems by Rossetti. Shaw was a prolific illustrator of books and short stories and his work in this field includes 39 volumes of Shakespeare. Shaw founded the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1910. Extractions: "An able revivalist in his own person of the Pre-Raphaelite school" - Magazine of Art Byam Shaw was a late follower of the Pre-Raphaelites , and was especially influenced by John William Waterhouse . He was born in India (his father was a legal official), the family returning to England in 1878 or 1879. Both parents encouraged him in art as a child, only giving him the most decorative books, and surrounding him only with that which was beautiful. From 1880 he was tutored by J. A. Vintner, until 1887 when his father died. His mother, keen for Byam Shaw to continue painting although the rest of the family opposed the idea, arranged for him to be taken to see John Millais , who advised that the young man should immediately start working towards a studentship at the Royal Academy Schools. To this end, he studied at St John's Wood School for two years, and was then able to enter the Academy Schools in 1890. He studied there until 1892, and then shared a studio with the artist Gerald Metcalfe. Later, together with Vicat Cole , he founded a school of art in Kensington.

Extractions: About the painting: In the Old Testament (Kings I and II) Jezebel was a Phoenician princess who was the wife of King Ahab and the mother of Ahaziah, Jehoram, and Athaliah. She interfered with the exclusive worship of the Hebrew god Yahweh, disregarding the rights of the comman man, and defying the great prophets Elijah and Elisha, she encouraged worship of Baal. Elijah predicted that Ahab and all his heirs would be destroyed and that dogs in Jezreel would devour Jezebel. A few years later, Ahab perished in battle with the Syrians. Jezebel lived on for approximately another ten years with her son Jehoram as ruler. The prophet Elisha had a military commander named Jehu annoited to be king of Israel, an act that provoked civil war. Jehu killed Jehoram and then went to Jezebel's palace. Expecting him, she adorned herself for the occasion. Looking down from her window, she taunted him, and Jehu ordered her eunuchs to throw her out the window. Later, when he commanded that she be properly buried as a king's daughter, it was discovered that dogs had eaten most of her body. Jezebel has come to be known as an archetype of the wicked woman.

Extractions: The Caged Bird John Liston Byam Shaw, RI AWRS 1872-1919 Signed and dated 1907 Oil on canvas 37 x 28 inches, 94 x 71 centimetres Provenance: Glen Byam Shaw, the artist's son; Mrs R. 0. Warren 1932; Christie's London, 23 March 1984, lot 67. Exhibited: London, The New Gallery, 1907 Oxford, Ashmolean Museum, Byam Shaw , 1986, number 27. In The Caged Bird , Byam Shaw uses allegory to the same purpose. The caged bird is literally released, whilst the girl herself will never be free to follow her heart. As the youngest daughter, her duties lie with her ageing parents. The startling clarity and gaiety of the colours set in the old garden at Condover Hall in Shropshire are in sharp contrast to the sobering reality of her situation. The model for the painting was Maud Tindal Atkinson, an artist pupil who exhibited at the Royal Academy 1907, from whom he painted a life size watercolour which hung at the Royal Academy in 1906. The symbolism of the release of a caged bird in Seventeenth Century Dutch painting signified the loss of virginity of the owner. As Maud was his favourite pupil, it would seem apparent that this hidden meaning was not lost on the artist. Peter Nahum Ltd, London has most generously given its permission to use in the
