OBITUARY - The Times June 27 th We regret to learn that Mr Frederick Sandys the eminent painter died on Saturday in Kensington aged 72. Except for a small exhibition of his works held recently at the Leicester Galleries, Mr Sandys had almost disappeared from view for many years past; but those who are familiar with the black and white work of the sixties and seventies, and those who can carry their memories back to the year Medea, was exhibited, will always regard him as a man who might, if he had so chosen, have been among the foremost artists of his time. A few years younger than John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and William Holman Hunt, he was never a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but to a great extent he adopted their methods, and followed the same ideals. Like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti with both of whom at one time he was on terms of intimacy-he was a devotee of Celtic romance, and of those classical stories which had a romantic element.; hence Morgan la Fay, the Sangraal Cycle, and the Tales of of Medea and Cassandra, formed the subjects of some of his early pictures. At his best as in Medea, and Portrait of an Elderly Lady,(seen in the recent exhibition), his work was the result not only of a genuine artistic conception, but of prodigious labour;

The retired soldier contemplates the autumn of his life watched, perhaps, by his daughter and grandchild. The background is, as usual with Sandys, wonderfully done, and reminds me somewhat of Millais 'Sir Isumbras at The Ford,' with it's clear sky, and reflections on the water. Extractions: Born Anthony Frederick Augustus Sandys in Norwich in 1832. He spent most of his life in London where he died in 1902, but Norfolk scenes appear regularly in his art. Between 1861 and 1866 he established a high reputation among his peers as an illustrator for the periodicals of the day ( Once a Week, Good Words ) He was influenced by his studies in German Renaissance prints. His name was synonymous with industry and graphic flair. It was boasted of him that he never needed to alter a drawing. In later life his energies were wasted in large pastel portraits of his major patrons such as the Colman family of Norwich. Many of his images contain puzzling symbolism. His reference to Japanese imagery in Until Her Death (there is a drawing of a samurai on the side of the vase) still puzzles. He uses a similar pose in The Old Chartis t , combined with odd detailed features in the landscape beyond. He was to use the subject in a painting now in the collection of the Castle Museum, Norwich. Extractions: The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848 by a group of English painters: Dante Gabriel Rossetti John Everett Millais and William Holman Hunt , as well as poets and critics: William Michael Rossetti, an art critic and Dante's younger brother; the art critic Frederic George Stephens; the painter James Collinson; and the sculptor and poet Thomas Woolner . Millais left the group in 1859, but as the second generation Pre-Raphaelites, other English artists joined it, including the painter Edward Coley Burne-Jones ; the poet and artist William Morris was never a Pre-Raphaelite in the true conception of the term. The group reacted against the Victorian materialism and the conventions of the Royal Academy in London and was inspired by medieval and early Renaissance painters up to and including the Italian painter Raphael. They found their inspiration at first from the bible, history and poems, but soon the subjects from modern life were also used rooted in realism and truth to nature. Pre-Raphaelite art became distinctive for its blend of archaic, romantic, and moralistic qualities.
