Exhibited at Royal Academy, Birmingham, Liverpool and the Paris Salon. Illustrated Longfellow's Golden Legend , and designed a stained glass window for St Saviour's, Scarborough. Extractions: Sidney Meteyard was born in the West Midlands and studied at the Birmingham School of Art . He later taught there, marrying one of his pupils, Kate Eadie. He was a painter and stained glass artist, and also did some illustrative work (most notably Longfellow's Golden Legend ). At the School he also taught various crafts, including enamelling, which he sometimes did in collaboration with his wife. He was much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites , especially D. G. Rossetti and Edward Coley Burne-Jones . His paintings can show a wistful, slightly sad theme, or be very much in the symbolist idiom. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1900-1918. Paradise Lost There are three large oils by Meteyard in the Birmingham art gallery: Love in Bondage The Return of Orpheus and I am half sick of shadows, said the Lady of Shalott (with his wife as the model).
