Extractions: Comienza su actividad artística en los años 50, alejado del expresionismo abstracto que en ese momento estaba en auge. Utiliza en sus obras objetos cotidianos tales como banderas, números, mapas o letras, no tanto como representaciones, sino para crear la idea de pintura como objeto en sí mismo, por medio de gruesas superficies pictóricas y grandes riquezas cromáticas. Se le considera, junto a Rauschenberg , uno de los mayores exponentes del neodadaísmo, corriente que surge en estos años en el ámbito de la vanguardia neoyorquina. Su obra, a finales de la década de los 50, se caracteriza por la inserción de objetos reales, como reglas o compases, y se ha considerado precedente del Pop Art. En los años 70 abandona esta práctica volviendo a una búsqueda puramente pictórica.

Extractions: Johns wurde am 15. Mai 1930 in Allendale, South Carolina geboren. Nach einem Studium an der University of South Carolina, zog er 1952 nach New York, wo er Robert Rauschenberg kennenlernte, der ihn in den Kreis der New Yorker Avantgarde einführte. Seit 1954 malte Johns Vorläufer des Pop-art, wie die amerikanische Flagge, Schießscheiben, Zahlen oder abstrahierte amerikanische Landkarten. Später baute er Gegenstände des täglichen Lebens, wie z.B. Besteck oder Geschirr, in seine Bilder ein und erregte damit 1964 auf der Biennale in Venedig einiges Aufsehen. Im gleichen Jahr fand seine erste Einzelausstellung in einem Museum in Columbia statt. Johns lebt in Stony Point, New York. Home Kunstarchiv

In 1954 he began painting works in a manner radically different from the abstract expressionist style that then dominated American art. His canvases were devoted to such familiar objects as targets, American flags, numbers, and alphabet letters. He painted these subjects with objectivity and precision, applying paint very thickly, so that the paintings became objects in themselves rather than reproductions of recognizable items. Extractions: The life's work of an artist who has had a profound influence on American art was featured in this, the first full retrospective of Jasper Johns's work since 1977. Included in this comprehensive chronological survey were more than 225 paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures. These works, many from private collections including Johns's own, span more than forty years; a number of the recent images had never before been shown publicly. Johns's art unites mastery, mystery, simplicity, and contradiction. His methodical working process combines intense deliberation and experimentation, obsessive craft, cycles of revision and repetition, and decisive shifts of direction. Johns also frequently borrows images from other artists, which, ironically, only underscores the originality of his own vision. Johns's work with allover patterns of abstract "hatch-mark" strokes in the 1970s was represented with seldom-seen masterworks such as Scent Weeping Women (1975). His shift to realist figuration after 1980, and his concern with the work of other artists and with autobiography, was chronicled through individual paintings, pairs, and groups of works.
