Important Works: Bio: Vincent Van Gogh is probably one of the most well known and influential artists of the 19th century. The son of a Dutch pastor, the young Van Gogh worked for picture dealers along with his brother Theo. He also taught in two English schools and in his twenties, became a missionary in the coal mining district of the Barniage in Belgium, where he lived among the miners and shared their hardships. During his life, Van Gogh lived in various locations including Brussels, The Hague, Antwerp and Drenthe and in his travels, taught himself to draw and paint, in addition to taking the occasional art lesson. He moved to Paris at age 33 to live with his brother Theo (who was working in a gallery), and it was there that he came into contact with the work of the Impressionists.

His internal turbulence is clearly seen in most of his paintings, which set the stage for the direction of a new style of painting called Expressionism. It is characterized by the use of symbols and a style that expresses the artist's inner feelings about his subject. Therefore, an understanding of the paintings by Van Gogh requires insight into his turbulent life, because his style of painting is exemplified by a projection of the painter's inner experience onto the canvas he paints. In Vincent Van Gogh's own words, he said, "What lives in art and is eternally living, is first of all the painter, and then the painting." To understand an artist of Expressionism we must first explore their biography. Many of us can identify with the roadblocks that Vincent Van Gogh experienced in his many career and romantic pursuits, all ending in failure. His reaction to these experiences however, demonstrates a biological and psychological abnormality, causing behaviors that alienated those around him. As he became more isolated from society and began to pour all of his energies into painting, his eccentricities and outbursts developed pathological traits, which caused him first, to be institutionalized, and second, it led to his suicidal death at the young age of 37.

    Extractions: Perhaps one of the most famous images in the world, van Gogh's Starry Night painting was created in 1889. In the spring of that year, a troubled van Gogh entered the insane asylum at St. Remy in France. Incidentally, St. Remy was the birthplace of the prophet Nostradamus. The Starry Night was painted by van Gogh while in the asylum and it features elements that were found in the area. The cypress tree, the small village with the church and the grove of olive trees were all located outside van Gogh's room window. However, the painting, unlike all of van Gogh's others, was painted entirely from memory. The Starry Night also features an incredible night sky, painted with bright, bold brush strokes; a trademark of the artist. In a letter to his brother Theo, van Gogh described the night sky in St. Remy, "In the blue depths, the stars were sparkling, greenish yellow, white, rose, brighter, flashing more like jewels than they do at home - even in Paris; opals you might call them, emeralds, lapis, rubies, sapphires."

Vincent's mental instability is legend. He attempted to take Paul Gauguin's life and later committed himself to several asylums in hopes of an unrealized cure. Van Gogh painted furiously and "The Starry Night" vibrates with rockets of burning yellow while planets gyrate like cartwheels. The hills quake and heave, yet the cosmic gold fireworks that swirl against the blue sky are somehow restful. This painting is probably the most popular of Vincent's works. The notes above are from a card supplied with a painted coffee cup which D.Wells received in December 1993 as a Christmas present. This version of the image was copied in July 1994 by Daniel Egret from Le WebLouvre . 'The Starry Night' is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which has a Web page on the painting (including an excellent JPEG of it). Help All articles in this series Artist: Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was a social radical whose encounter with impressionism through his art dealer brother Theo enabled him to create an art at once sensual and compassionate. His genius was literary as well as visual (his letters constitute one of the greatest 19th-century novels) and, prior to his going to Paris in 1886, his idea of himself as an artist was formed as much by his reading of socially critical authors, especially Charles Dickens and George Eliot, as by his reverence for the rural painter Millet. Teaching himself to draw and paint while living a marginal life in Holland, he rejected the bourgeois art of portraiture and romantic narrative in favour of a raw scrutiny of nature and of peasants scratching a living from the hard cold ground. On the eve of his discovering impressionism, Van Gogh saw himself as a painter of peasant life - a simple-hearted, popular alternative to the urban painter-flaneur whom Baudelaire characterised as the painter of modern life. "By continually observing peasant life, at all hours of the day," he wrote to Theo, "I have become so involved in it that I rarely think of anything else."

The two artists wrote often to one another, friends, and relatives. Van Gogh's most frequent correspondent was his brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris in the late 1880s. The quotations reveal that both men were avid chroniclers of the subjects they painted: peasants, townspeople, landscapes, and houses. The painters' candid remarks about their own canvases, most of which had either just been completed or were still in progress, offer unique perspectives on the Arles period. They also refer to a number of works painted before and after the artists' time together.
