Extractions: Emily Carr is one of Canadas most beloved artists and is world renown for her rich, colourful paintings of British Columbias west coast. She also wrote several best-selling books including "The Book of Small," which recounts many of her childhood memories in the family home at 207 Government St. now called Emily Carr House. The house has been standing since 1864 and served the family well over much of that time. Now it belongs to the public and has been put to good use as both a museum and gallery. Emily Carr was brought into this world during a fierce snowstorm on the night of December 13, 1871, in an old wooden bed that still sits in what later became her bedroom. Like the other 10 rooms open to public viewing, Emilys bedroom has been carefully restored and redecorated in order to appear as close as possible to its original state. Even the smallest details are addressed for example, the paint had been wallpapered over in several rooms, so the restorers had to painstakingly strip off the newer layers in order to reach the original. In one case they even used an ultra-violet light to find out what the parlours wallpaper had looked like. Thanks to the huge efforts of the restoration team and the museums curators, a trip to Emily Carr House is like travelling back to the late 1800's when the Carr family lived, worked and played within these very walls.

Extractions: Growing Pains : The Emerging Aesthetics of Emily Carr The discussion of Emily Carr's Growing Pains was written by Greg Dixon during studies of Canadian Literature. As with all literary analysis, you are encouraged to read the original before reading the commentary. While the last chapters of Growing Pains contain focused discussions of Carr's growing aesthetic of Art, direct discussion of aesthetics is rare in the rest of the work. The young Emily Carr has an inner drive to paint, but has little interest in formal analysis. Yet the events chronicled by the mature Carr reveal a developing artistic sensibility. Through repeated contrasts of living things versus dead things, imitation versus authentic expression, and inner essence versus exterior appearances, Carr retraces her long and often painful journey towards an Art form capable of expressing the essential nature of the Western forest. The child Carr is presented as a loner who intuitively seeks refuge in the forests and lily fields near her family home. Perhaps the earliest statement of the importance of the forest to Carr's artistic work comes in the description of wandering into the forest on the family pony: I let down his bridle and we nibbled, he on the grass, I at the deep sacred beauty of Canada's still woods. Maybe after all I owe a "thank-you" to the remittance ones and to the riding whip for driving me out into the woods. Certainly I do to old Johnny for finding the deep lovely places that were the very foundation on which my work as a painter was to be built. (p. 14)

Richard Carr (Emily's father) bought the 4-acre property (original size) from Col. Moody on August 13, 1863. The house was designed by architect John Wright. The house was built on the property in 1864. It is an Italianate Victorian house well-built from Californian redwood. The address was originally 44 Carr Street, named after her father. The address was changed in 1908 to 207 Government Street. Growing up in Carr House held wonderful memories for Emily. Her father was extremely English and had a homesickness for his land. Their house and gardens therefore reflected the desire to be more "English" than ever before. Restored by the B.C. Heritage Branch, Province of British Columbia, Carr House is furnished as it might have been when Emily was a little girl. She travelled extensively throughout the wilderness of British Columbia and visited many Aboriginal groups. Her colourful, expressionistic paintings depict her travels through the province, and her style was original and daring in its day. She turned to writing in her later life, and several of her books and reminiscences have been published and are very popular today. La famille Carr a immigré au Canada depuis l'Angleterre dans l'effervescence de la ruée vers l'or. Son père, aventurier et commerçant, a été un homme prospère. Le caractère autoritaire de cet homme a cependant réveillé l'esprit rebel de sa fille Emily. Toute jeune, elle n'aimait pas l'école et préférait dessiner que d'être bonne élève. Courir dans la nature luxuriante de Victoria était beaucoup plus excitant pour elle que de se contraindre aux manières anglaises visant à en faire une jeune fille de bonne famille. Elle avait son franc parler. Elle montait à cheval sans selle, scandalisant ainsi la bonne société anglaise de Victoria. Quand on lit sur sa vie et son oeuvre, on découvre chez Emily Carr un tempérament indépendant, déterminé, voire insolent. À part sa peinture, elle nous a laissé son autobiographie, des poteries et quelques ouvrages écrits pendant les dernières années de sa vie. Elle s'est éteinte en 1945 à l'âge de 73 ans. L'oeuvre d'Emily Carr est touchante,fascinante et ensorcelante. Sa vie d'artiste s'est confondue avec sa recherche intérieure qui pris la forme d'une quête spirituelle. Elle a cherché la profondeur du sens de ses oeuvres non dans les objets, mais dans son propre regard. Grâce à elle l'esprit de la forêt et des peuples amérindiens renaît sous nos yeux. Ils nous font croire à la merveilleuse aventure qu'a du être la vie intérieure et artistique de cette femme hors du commun.
