Extractions: Bosch's Contemporaries A Virtual Gallery of Selected Paintings from the Years 1450-1510 To understand the uniqueness of Bosch's work, one has to see him among his contemporaries. The arts were flourishing in Burgundy and Brabant. In the outgoing 15th century the Brabantian towns, Antwerp, Brugge, Ghent, and Brussels, were getting rich from the far-reaching trade of their merchants, and to atone for this "embarrassment of riches", as Simon Schama has aptly called it, commissioned innumerable altars for their churches and monasteries. And the taste in Brabant was exquisite, far higher than, for example, among the nouveau-rich burghers of Cologne. A phenomenon that has not been studied, but can easily be seen by walking through the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in that town. Let me try to show you these non- relationships by comparing several seminal paintings with Bosch's favorite subjects. Rogier van der Weyden Bosch never saw the "Last Judgment" altars by Rogier van der Weyden or that by Hans Memling wich between themselves define the symbols and style of the Northern Late Gothic. Both were located far from Brabant. Rogier van der Weyden's stood in Beaune in Burgundy, and Memling's major opus was commissioned by the burghers of Danzig for their "Marienkirche." Both circumscribe the experience and knowledge of death using the metaphors of the Apocalypse. Images, we now realize, Bosch uses sparingly if at all. Looking at these two paintings the shocking inversion of these religious symbols in the "Garden of Delights" and his "Temptation of St. Anthony" in Lisbon - the third and forth great triptych of that time - become discernible, their flavor of antinomy and unconventionality undeniable.
Last-judgment 2 shown below. The museum attributes it to dieric bouts the elder, dated~1450, ie, it predates Bosch's by more than ~30 years. On the http://rolfgross.topcities.com/Bosch/last-judgment/last-judgment.htm
Extractions: Return to Table of Contents Encounters with the Next World We know of only two authentic polyptychs by Bosch that depict the "Last Judgement," a popular subject among his contemporaries. The apocalyptic times of the pre-Reformation were fraught with strange cults, ideas, a restless intellectual ferment, sufferings, wars, and the plague whenever the rats became too many. The End of the World seemed eminent and was predicted by all seers. But Bosch? What kind of Judgement Day would he imagine, the believer in a Garden of the Elect? Philip the Fair of Burgundy in 1504 ordered a "Last Judgement" from Bosch. This order has usually been identified with the Vienna triptych below. However, the document in the books of Philip's court specifies the size of the work as 249 x 304 cm, while the altarpiece in Vienna is much smaller, only 163 x 247cm when the wings are opened. In addition the Vienna triptych is now dated ~1482, twenty yeas before the purchase order was issued. No accounts of an actual payment for such a work can be found in the books of Philip's household. I suggest that Philip's order may have been cancelled after the debacle of Almaengien's apostasy (for a discussion see my Conclusions Last Judgement (Bosch and workshop)
