Product Description
Understanding the nature and appropriate management of soils for roads, houses, buildings, and other human-engineered artificial environments is of concern to soil scientists, land managers, environmental scientists, and biologists. Challenges include waste disposal, pest management, erosion and sediment control, construction, and minimization of radon risk. The manner in which we manage and preserve this valuable natural resource influences the stability and beauty of our communities, as well as the quality of life and the environment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Soil Microbiology, Ecology and Biochemistry, Third Edition
Soil Microbiology, Ecology and Biochemistry, Third Edition by Eldor Alvin Paul

The topics that the editor selected, are well developed and its updated bibliography. This book serves both query for the teacher as the degree and postgraduate student.

My best wishes

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good text book
This book has some excellent introductory material if you want to learn about soil microbiology. It is nicely organized with chapters (check the table of contents). A very good improvement over the previous edition in that it talks about some of the recent technology such as metagenomics. I would not recommend it as a reference book for graduate students, but a very good intro text book for grad and undergrads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry, Second Edition
Book in very good condition when arrived, was new when purchased.Cost was a little high at 62.00 dollars.Received in a timely manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard text for soil microbiology
I was a graduate student in soils and forestry when I took a class in soil microbiology that used this text. It is essentially the gold standard for soil micro texts. It isn't overly technical, but it includes a thorough analysis of the basic concepts needed to understand most aspects of soil microbiology research and application. The book uses mostlyagronomic examples, but there is enough variety of ecosystems to make it useful for those working in forestry, grasslands, and almost any type of soil. Those interested in detailed discussions of molecular microbial methods or biotechnology may be disappointed, but for the general student looking to understand what those billion microbes per teaspoon of soil are doing, this book is the best introduction out there. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent History
Sucheng Chan has written an excellent history of the contribution of Chinese agriculturists to the development of the American West.By interweaving the unusual with the mundane she has produced a text that relates statistically derived data to important generalizations regardingthe interdependency of ethnic groups, labor specializations, and regions. Highly recommended to the historian or anthropologist interested in laborspecialization and ethnic adaptation in the 19th and 20th centuries.Thisbook is available in paper as well as hardback. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This book presents a comprehensive scientific overview of the components and processes that underpin the biological characteristics of soil fertility. It demonstrates the interdependence of soil biological fertility with physical and chemical characteristics of soil. The book highlights the enormous diversity of life in soil and the resulting effects that management of land can have on the contribution of this diverse community to soil fertility in an agricultural context. It is becoming more relevant to explore soil biological processes in terms of their contribution to soil fertility. However, dilemmas do arise. Some agricultural chemicals may either overshadow or enhance biological contributions to soil fertility. The challenge is to select land management practices that improve the capacity of biological processes to contribute to soil physical and chemical fertility while increasing the sustainability of farming systems for particular soils and climates. Case studies of sustainable farming systems in relation to soil biological fertility are discussed and a global perspective is given about sustainability of soil management in relation to international agreements and environmental issues. This book is aimed at agricultural and environmental research scientists, agricultural extension officers and university students in a range of disciplines, including soil science (and subdisciplines of soil biology, root pathology, root symbioses, soil chemistry and soil physics), plant science, agronomy, animal science, land management and environmental science, who wish to gain an overview of the biological processes that contribute to soil fertility and have the potential to influence the production of food for humans and animals. It would also be of interest to leading farmers who are interested in understanding soil processes in their production systems. Soil biological fertility is often ignored but its central importance to sustainable use of land in agriculture makes it relevant to scientists and students in all disciplines related to agricultural production and environmental land management. ... Product Description

Sustainable agriculture is a rapidly growing field aiming at producing food and energy in a sustainable way for humans and their children. Sustainable agriculture is a discipline that addresses current issues such as climate change, increasing food and fuel prices, poor-nation starvation, rich-nation obesity, water pollution, soil erosion, fertility loss, pest control, and biodiversity depletion. Novel, environmentally-friendly solutions are proposed based on integrated knowledge from sciences as diverse as agronomy, soil science, molecular biology, chemistry, toxicology, ecology, economy, and social sciences. Indeed, sustainable agriculture decipher mechanisms of processes that occur from the molecular level to the farming system to the global level at time scales ranging from seconds to centuries. For that, scientists use the system approach that involves studying components and interactions of a whole system to address scientific, economic and social issues. In that respect, sustainable agriculture is not a classical, narrow science. Instead of solving problems using the classical painkiller approach that treats only negative impacts, sustainable agriculture treats problem sources. Because most actual society issues are now intertwined, global, and fast-developing, sustainable agriculture will bring solutions to build a safer world. This book series gathers review articles that analyze current agricultural issues and knowledge, then propose alternative solutions. It will therefore help all scientists, decision-makers, professors, farmers and politicians who wish to build a safe agriculture, energy and food system for future generations.

Product Description
The potential to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and global climate change is one factor driving agricultural policy development of programs that might pay farmers for practices with a high potential to sequester carbon. With chapters by economists, policy makers, farmers, land managers, energy company representatives, and soil scientists, Agricultural Practices and Policies for Carbon Sequestration in Soil explores a broad range of topics. It examines topics such as the effects of soil tillage and mulch rate, soil monitoring and assessment, soil fertility management, policy options, and the economic issues associated with carbon sequestration. This volume caps a "series" of books from leading researchers on carbon sequestration in soils by integrating the science with the economic and policy issues surrounding it. It provides agricultural scientists, farmers, and policy makers with innovative and environmentally friendly practices for improved land management and crop production. Agricultural Practices and Policies for Carbon Sequestration in Soil helps to identify strategies that can lead to widespread adoption of management practices that will enhance productivity, the soil carbon pool, and the overall environment. ... Product Description
Chemical fertilizers have had a significant impact on foodproduction in the recent past, and are today an indispensable part ofmodern agriculture. On the other hand, the oil crisis of the 1970s andthe current Middle East problems are constant reminders of thevulnerability of our fossil fuel dependent agriculture. There are vastareas of the developing world where N fertilizers are neitheravailable nor affordable and, in most of these countries, balance ofpayment problems have resulted in the removal of N fertilizersubsidies. The external costs of environmental degradation and humanhealth far exceed economic concerns. Input efficiency of N fertilizeris one of the lowest and, in turn, contributes substantially toenvironmental pollution. Nitrate in ground and surface waters and thethreat to the stability of the ozone layer from gaseous oxides ofnitrogen are major health and environmental concerns. The removal oflarge quantities of crop produce from the land also depletes soil ofits native N reserves. Another concern is the decline in crop yieldsunder continuous use of N fertilizers.
These economic, environmental and production considerations dictatethat biological alternatives which can augment, and in some casesreplace, N fertilizers must be exploited. Long-term sustainability ofagricultural systems must rely on the use and effective management ofinternal resources. The process of biological nitrogen fixation offersand economically attractive and ecologically sound means of reducingexternal nitrogen input and improving the quality and quantity ofinternal resources. In this book, we outline sustainability issuesthat dictate an increased use of biological nitrogen fixation and theconstraints on its optimal use in agriculture.
