1-0 out of 5 stars Beginning text
Introduction to Horticulture Science and Technology. This is an introductory text that covers a lot of material lightly. It does cover a few horticulture trade methods that are not common knowledge. The science part is very elementary, as it assumes zero background in biology.Example: "Sexual propagation is the reproduction of plants with the use of seeds.Plants grown from seeds are called seedlings."Not captivating reading. The list of turf grasses and their characteristics is useful, but coverage of each subject is too brief.

The first sentence of almost every paragraph could be omitted for being too elementary or just pointless.Example, under Pest Management Sub-head: Organisms That Cause Disease: Sub-sub-head: Pests Cause Damage.Sub-sub-sub-head: How Damage Affects the Grower: "People who produce plants are affected when pests strike their corps. This damage reduces the income to growers.Costs of production are increased and the quantity produced is decreased."I am a landscaper.I've skimmed the book for useful bits of information and now I'm going to throw it away. ... The application of microbial biotechnology to horticulture is of great importance, because it has the potential to increase productivity, to enhance quality and shelf-life of the produce and to develop novel techniques in food processing and for conversion of horticultural wastes into renewal energy sources. In addition, a wide array of scientific activities and resulting associated products, including biofertilizers, biological N2-fixation, microbial pesticides and microbial bio-control agents against plant pathogens focus at the interface between applied microbiology and horticulture. This volume attempts to highlight some of the significant aspects of the subjects. Volume 2 of this book will highlight subjects like food biotechnology, coffee and cocoa fermentation, applications of microbial enzymes in food processing, single cell protein and wine biotechnology among others. ... Product Description
Horticulture and gardening activity is used as a therapy in the UK for growing numbers of vulnerable people, including those with mental health problems, learning difficulties and other health and social problems. However, until now little published work has focused on how horticulture and gardening can help to promote social inclusion for these vulnerable groups. This guide looks at the ways in which social and therapeutic horticulture (STH) projects can help foster independence, build self esteem and confidence and provide training and employment opportunities for people with health or social problems. This guide will be useful for anyone thinking about setting up STH services for vulnerable groups or for those already providing STH support but who want to understand further the nature and extent of provision currently available in the UK.The guide includes: information about the type and range of horticulture and gardening activities that may benefit vulnerable clients or service users, including cultivation, construction work, arts and crafts, marketing, training and employment opportunities; policy information relating to risk assessment, health and safety issues, confidentiality and client monitoring and evaluation; examples from current practice and provision in the UK to demonstrate how STH projects can promote social inclusion for a range of vulnerable clients, including developing clients' physical, emotional and social skills through regular project attendance. The Growing Together project is a partnership between Loughborough University and Thrive and has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund. This guide complements a research study, Health, well-being and social inclusion: Therapeutic horticulture in the UK, which is also available from The Policy Press. ... Read more
