R is for Rose is Carolyn Parker's unique tribute to her passion for the rose.It is a lovely book with wonderful photography, heartfelt prose and a wealth of information about rose varieties.Rosarians will love the book and those with milder affections will savor the views of gardens and species roses. Her photography is fantastic and her design aesthetic is sharp, inventive and compelling--the floral arrangements and set shots are gorgeous. My favorite element is the rose alphabet--what a fantastic idea and what a clever play on the physical qualities of each species.

Carolyn Parker's book is like a friendly chat over a cup of tea, and at the same time it makes her extensive knowledge of rosesaccessible to a non-gardener. Her magnificent photographs and her care-full description have given me a heightened awareness of plants and flowers I might once have passed by or taken for granted. The stories Carolyn Parker tells are charming and so appreciateve of her fellow human beings, be they rose experts she traveled the world to meet or a friend she grew up with.In addition, she honors and celebrates her own inner growth as she writes.I think this book is actually a self-help book of the highest kind. ... Most of the world's poorest smallholders depend on tropical roots and tubers crops as their principal source of food and nutrition. These species produce large quantities of dietary energy and have stable yields under difficult environmental conditions. The most important crops are cassava, sweet potato, yam and the aroids, sharing important common traits such as bulkiness, post-harvest perishability and vegetative propagation. This book compiles the most up to date information on the origin, genetics, physiology, agronomy, pests and diseases and post harvest processing of these crops, while attempting to provide ideas for further research and development. ... Product Description
Practical Drainage is easy to read and presented in a non-technical style generously supported with helpful illustrations. There are three key messages in this book: water moves sideways only slowly through soil—leading to a detailed description of how drains work; the how-and-why of perched water table methods of construction; and sands are different from one another—they must be tested before use in turf root zones. These key messages are preceded by detailed descriptions of how water moves into soils and the effects of compaction on that movement. The final chapters give step-by-step guidelines for calculating drain spacings and depths, based on measurements of the hydraulic conductivity of the soil and its various layers. There are also chapters about how to measure hydraulic conductivity and how to design and install sub-soil drainage systems. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Flower Out of Place
Connolly should be writing serious literature instead of detective novels. There's a feeling of condescension about these reads in that he knows the genre is beneath his talents, but, "Hey, I gotta' pay the rent, right?".I don't think he enjoys writing these and IMHO, it shows.

Technically:
1.) He throws in a multitude of characters which he does nothing with.
2.) He throws out plot lines which he leaves hanging.
3.) His dialog leaves much to be desired.
4.) His "Police Procedural" is superficial if not non-existent.
5.) He alludes to some kind of deep relationship between sundry characters with no explanation as to background.
6.) He spends an inordinate amount of time setting up scenes and then skims over them as they unfold.
7.) His protagonist is a deeply troubled person, a character one would expect pursuing a livelihood more elevated in station than a Private Detective. He doesn't seem to enjoy what he is doing for a living (perhaps a Freudian transference?) and this pervades the novel.Reminds one of an actor who continually asks, "What's my motivation?"Indeed...

He's no John Sandford, nor Michael Connelly, nor Lee Child, nor Robert Crais. That said, if you have read through the oeuvre of these authors and similar, John Connolly is an author you might wish to spend some time with.

If you are looking for an author to read for the poetry and prose, psychology and insight, you may find this series very satisfying.

You will probably come away from this read more pensive about the human condition than any sense of having been entertained.

5-0 out of 5 stars My First Connolly Book - But Not My Last
I bought this a while back, and one day decided to give it a shot. I was blown away by both story and characters, and the wonderful quality of Connolly's prose. He paints with words, and Charlie Parker is one of the best detective/troubled human beings/ex-cops in fiction. Parker's two companions, Angel and Louis inject a sense of both comedy and darkness into the story. They are great characters. The story will, if you have any imagination at all, scare the crap out of you. In these days, the events described in the book (religious nutcases and horiffic murders of innocents in the woods of Maine) seem all too plausible. I have since read six or so Connolly books, beginning with the first, "Every Dead Thing." My recommendation is to read "Every Dead Thing" first. The Killing Kind is actually the third book in the series. I have every Connolly book, including one I bought for the Kindle -- "The Reapers," which I have not yet started.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shoddy, Mediocre & Bloated
This has to be THE worst crime novel I have ever read. When I take time out for a good read I want to relax and let the story fill my mind and effortlessly carry me on the writer's journey.I do not read for relxation or enjoyment volumes on physics, chemistry or random particle energy spectrums. If I did though, they'd be better than John Connolly's "The Killing Kind."

One of the many problems with Connolly's "The Killing Kind" is the plot.Although the book started out strong in plot development, it soon reached the point where his plot and the vast majority of the sub-plots were increasingly and annoyingly incredulous.I did not purchase this book expecting Tom & Jerry storylines.

Another of the issues with this novel is the author's need to introduce superfluous verbage ad nauseam. One does not have to describe every tree or leaf seen by every character from top to bottom. There is also a problem when more than half the words in most of your sentences are adjectives and adverbs. This is called bloating and for less-than-gifted writers usually suggests that they have such a hard time writing for effect that they have to fill pages with useless junk that does nothing for the story or the reader's journey. The same term "superfluous" applies to the long count of characters Connolly has written into this novel -- many of them adding nothing of value. One needs an appendix to keep track of who says or did what to whom, especially when he creates some trivial and insignificant characters who ultimately are quoted or referenced too long after you've forgotten who they are.

Last but not least, everybody likes an author with a verygood vocabulary. However, along with that comes the skill of knowing not only how to use the word, but when.It detracts from the quality of the nvel when you use the same word or words ten times per page for 400+ pages. That he can use the word arachnid or other technical names for other species is impressive, but using them continually ad mauseam smells a lot like the "baffle them with bull manure" trick.

The good news is that Connolly has the basics down and seems to have the ability to learn to write.Until such time as he acquires those additional skills such as those used by quality authors such as Michael Connelly or John Grisham, though, I'd give this author a miss and stick to late-night TV.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book only while...
...listening to some calm and lovely music, like Hildegarde von Bingen choral music.

I love these books, and have the whole series of Charlie Parker books by Mr. Connolly. However, this is one series that should be read as a series, as even though each book stands alright alone, they each build on the former in ways that enrich the reading of the next. His writing is always superior, and the story moves along well. The digressions into lyricism, descriptions of my favorite state of Maine, musings on mortality, all mesh together very well. This book is probably the one that hits my fears most solidly.I hope every year that he continues this saga with a new book."More, please."

4-0 out of 5 stars I see dead people.
John Connelly was born in Dublin in 1968 and spent five years working as a freelance journalist with the Irish Times. "Every Dead Thing", his first novel, was first published in 1999 and won that year's Shamus Award.

Charlie Parker hasn't had an entirely easy life : he was still a boy when his father committed suicide and it's only two years since his wife and daughter were murdered. Charlie currently works as a PI, but had initially followed his father's footsteps and joined the NYPD. He is now in his mid-thirties, and has returned to Scarborough, Maine - he lives alone in the house he inherited from his grandfather.

Although Charlie now prefers to investigate only business-related, white collar crime, he breaks his own rule in "The Killing Kind". (Things tend to get a little creepy when he investigates murders and violent crime). He is hired by Jack Mercier, a former US Senator with a solid bedrock of old money. (Mercier's varied business interests have been successful enough to ensure the old money never gets the chance to run out. Oddly, for all his money, he's something of a liberal and is also happily married....which is veen more of an achievement, given his wife's frostiness).

Grace Peltier was the daughter of one of Mercier's former business colleagues. Having recently being found dead in her car, with a single gunshot wound to her head, the official line is that Grace had committed suicide. However, neither Mercier nor her father believe that for one second. She was happy, healthy, hadn't been taking anything mind-bending, and was close to completing her Masters. The method of her death didn't quite add up either : shooting herself with her left hand seemed particularly odd, given that she was right handed. For that matter, she'd always despised guns and had never carried one. While Charlie isn't at all comfortable taking the case, he finds it difficult to walk away - although quite some time has passd, he and Grace had dated briefly. (Charlie feels a little guilty about the split and, in fairness, he hadn't exactly covered himself in glory). Grace's Masters thesis covered a very meaty topic though. It was an investigation into the Aroostook Baptists, a religious community that was once based in Maine. It was founded by a Reverend Faulkner in 1963 though, by January 1964, all trace of the community and Faulkner had disappeared. Interestingly, shortly before her death, she had spoken with a man called Carter Paragon - a nasty individual who was the head of a religious outfit called 'the Fellowship'. While nothing has ever been proved, the Fellowship has allegedly funded a number of religious-extremist and far-right groupings...the sort who would attack AIDS clinics, family planning centres, synagogues and abortion clinics.

However, it's clear that Charlie will be dealing with more that just Grace's death. The book opens with Dr Alison Beck's very unpleasant, final few hours. Beck had been performing abortions for many years and had established her own clinic in Minneapolis. Where once she had been welcomed, times have changed and - after many years of attacks from the anti-abortion lobby - the stress and strain had been starting to tell. After a worrying visit from a spider-lover and a conversation with a supporter called (ahem) Mercier, Beck had decided to take a vacation. Unfortunately, she never even managed to leave her garage : she was later discovered in her car, having died a gruesome, spider-fuelled death. Meanwhile, in preparation for some building work in North Maine, a group of workmen are clearing some vegetation. However, the work comes to an abrupt halt when the ground gives way underneath the bulldozer...and uncovers what appears to have been an extensive and `unofficial' graveyard.

This is definitely one of the best thrillers I've read. The book's villain, Pudd, is a seriously creepy character and his use of spiders as a weapon should do enough to make your skin crawl. (Charlie is very lucky to have two grimy sidekicks like Angel and Louis. The pair have a very close working relationship and don't try to keep things legal if they believe someone deserves to die). An excellent, very readable book overall...though you might want to avoid reading it on a dark and stormy night ! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Tough Read for some!
This is an in DEPTH book on hydroponics.I want to grow some veg's and berries thru hydroponics, but you get the most involved system on the planet. You have temperature, bugs, plant food mixtures (hundreds of them), and then the equipment, fans, lights, greenhouse. As near as I can tell...it will cost you about $200 a tomato
when all is said and done. I must be missing something, but I have to wait until I get my water tested to see what kind of PH I need to up/down...so I can grow something. If you have a PHD in Ag, then this book might spur you on. But, for the average guy out here....I say "Nay...Nay".

3-0 out of 5 stars Half hardy and semiclassical
"The Plant Hunters" gives every sign of having been thrown together by Tyler Whittle to boil a pot. Yet he was an enthusiast for his subject, so there are many signs of a good book trying to get out.

Nevertheless, is it more than irritating, in a book about hunting plants, to read a page or two, sometimes more, about a plant hunter without a hint of what plants he found. (No women plant hunters allowed.)

This is definitely a book about the hunters and not the hunted. Hair's breadth escapes or failures to escape dominate the anecdotes. A great many plant hunters died in the field, typically falling off cliffs, but there were other ways. More than a couple were chopped up by Buddhist monks.

Rather more about rather fewer hunters would have made for a better book. When Whittle does give a subject some elbow room, as he does with his nominee for greatest of all collectors, David Douglas, it still is not enough. About the only subject who gets just about the right amount of space (seven pages) is Nathanial Ward, who devised the Wardian case, although he was not a plant hunter himself but a GP in the East End of London.

This is an insubstantial work, suitable for idling away a few hours in the late winter when the seed catalogs have become dog-eared.

It hardly seems to have earned a place in Horticulture magazine's Garden Classics, and the edition I have is anything but a classic. Reprinted, complete with howlers, from the plates of the 1970 edition, it includes two pages of acknowledgments for permission to reprint illustrations but not the illustrations themselves.

If you are going to spend the time it takes to read this book, turn hunter yourself and find the original Chilton edition and give the Lyons & Burford/Horticulture paperback reprint a miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history and biography of plant hunters
This book is in a way the "Laertus" of botanical explorers, full of information and gossip, descriptions of the historical periods in which the explorations took place, and the technologies and economics driving the field forward. All of this in a great, slightly sarcastic tone that makes it a real page turner.

One note: for the most part, the book only discusses the actual plants in passing...a bit of botanical background might be useful. On the other hand, I'm sure it would be just as good a read without the background knowledge, as the book is more about people than plants.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fast paced overview of horticultural collecting
In the wake of reading ORCHID FEVER, I looked for other books that dealt with the plant hunters -- particularly of the 19th century. What I found was this wonderful book that is even broader in scope, providing a fastpaced review of highlights in mankind's never ending task of collecting, naming and growing plants. The author does not try to present onlysensationalized material, and doesn't try to be "complete," butinstead gives a wonderful and highly readable overview of the field. Highlyrecommended.

Kidnapping in Columbia is no laughing matter. Establishing their identity beyond what the guerillas wanted to believe was difficult. All the while, I was hoped they would not give the guerillas information to make things worse, but Tom is honest to a fault. They have an intuitive way of collaborating together in the telling of the story. The book is written from both their points of view, which sometimes is hilarious - though serious as hell. I would highly recommend the book to anyone who loves adventure, travel and of course plants! I would also recommend visiting the Lullingstone Castle web site if you want to know more about the tremendous garden that Tom Hart Dyke has developed. [...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Big, but risky adventure...
It took me 2 days to read this book. Page-turner account about two backpackers who found themselves in a deep problem... and as captives of colombian guerillas they needed extraordinary endurance, patience, and adjustment for survive next 8 months in the jungle.

I would give 5 stars, but...

1. Long fragments about flowers, horticulture, orchids was REALLY boring for me, and they are too long for average reader who's not so interested in all this botanical stuff.

2. some errors in Spanish names of people, places and dialogues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Risky undertakings
A fast paced, rousing read to satisfy the thirst for adventure and curiosity.

Two young men, one looking for bold undertakings the other for orchids, attempt traveling through the improbable and perilous Darien Gap between Panama and Columbia.

This is a story of being kidnapped and held for ransom by a revolutionary Columbian guerrilla group for nine months in a most inhospitable environment.Their day to day existence in this bug-ridden, disease-infested jungle amid these radical insurgents is a page turner.
Conveyed with wit, sensitivity and anxiety, Dyke and Winder's escapades make for a riveting read.

4-0 out of 5 stars True Adventure Fun Read
The Cloud Garden came to my attention through a review in Outside Magazine.True adventure books make for an excellent break from novels and heavier literary works. This one is a perfect example. The story is gripping, the characters are likeable, and the book is hard to put down. The bad guys are painted honestly and roundly as real people. No one is all good nor all bad. This is a story about survival, wits, humanity and the romantic ideals of adventure of which so many of us dream.Find your synopsis elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Where I Want to Go
The discoveries made by eccentric British naturalists down through the years have literally turned the scientific community on its ears. But not all exploring trips have yielded spectacular results. In 2000, a young botanist set off to Central America in search of rare and beautiful species of orchids. He met up with another young explorer in northern Mexico. Where else to go but the Darien Gap, the only place where the Pan-American Highway isn't finished.

Traveling through the Gap, collecting along the way, they were just hours away from the Colombian border when they were ambushed by FARC guerillas who were to hold them hostage for the next nine months. From then on, their survival was a matter of extraordinary endurance, incredible ingenuity and not just a bit of luck.

The book written by this pair is a combination of travelogue, adventure store, and surprisingly not without a bit of humor.
