4-0 out of 5 stars Ornamental Palm Horticulture
A pure technical book, great for the farmers of palms. Everything you want to know about palms but not a palm's identification book. This book have only a few photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ornamental Palm Horticulture (Broschat, Meerow:2000)
The book was written in attempt to gather scientific literature on palm horticulture together in a single reference text. Broschat and Meerow have done that in a very simple and effective way. This is quite an comprehensive book that tackles the main aspects of palm horticulture from propagation to pests and interior maintenance of palms. Particularly useful are the sections on mineral nutrition and propagation. The different chapters of the book are well-complemented by over 100 illustrations which give you a better idea which disease or deficiency might affect your palm.

I have read the book in less than two days and I was able to immediately diagnostic nutrional deficiencies with my Spindle, Christmas and Phoenix palms. This book is not intended to describe how to grow a specific palm. Rather, it teaches general principles to grow and maintain healthy palms. This is the most complete and useful book on palms I have read so far. Every serious palm amateur should have one at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Comprehensive Treatise
Brimming with detailed, useful information on all aspects of palm horticulture.

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited cultural information
This book is an attempt to guide those interested in palm horticulture. However, finding that palm horticulture varies widely between the species, I found this title a disappointment. Some palms can't take iron for instance, but the authors neglect to give specific information on those species which would be helpful. The same applies to those palms that need iron.As a general guide, the book is ok, but if you really need to know how to care for your exotic and rare palms you may need advice from the local botanical garden or a nursery that specializes in growing palms to determine the nutritional requirements of a specific genus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Correcting misunderstandings about this book
The authors clearly had no intention in writing yet another book filled with photos of palm species that would instruct readers on what palms to plant. There are already many books that provide the service that two of these reviewers ask for ("Betrock's Landscape Palms,""Betrock's Cold Hardy Palms," "Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms") that give detailed horticultural information on palm species. The intent of this book is made very clear in the introduction: this a book on how to deal with palms horticulturally, not a guide on which palms to choose in a landscape. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent guide to color, seasons, soil, light
I love this book-- it includes numerous unusual shrub varieties throughout and is organized in a way I find very useful in planning my garden-- sections on color include purples, silvers, variegated, etc and well as on plant combinations to make the most or colors.Sections on the seasons help plan for interest throughout the year, whatever the height and light conditions you are facing.Sections on soils and light help with grouping plants that will thrive better together.Throughout, suggested good companions of other shrubs or perennials are helpful and inspiring. The photos are gorgeous. As I continue planning, I keep coming back to different sections to inspire me with different plants I hadn't considered. While the information on planting, pruning, and other care for different shrubs is less extensive in many cases, notice is often given where a shrub is fussy, dislikes wet soils, or where blooms are delayed for several years, for example. This is an excellent book for helping you envision and plan-- or revamp-- your garden. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Horticulture
I received the book in a timely manner; also, the book came in excellent condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and teaching tool (if you don't need additional assistance).
This book makes either an excellent teaching resource or a good personal reference book.I got it for teaching horticulture to my niece and ended up spending hours reading for my own personal benefit! There is one drawback. In the early pages of the book, reference is made to additional material (for teaching) which can be obtained from the Pearson's website. This material is NOT available to anyone who does not purchase the book through that website. However, when my sister attempted to purchase 1 copy of the book through the aforementioned website, there was no way to do so.Therefore, in effect, this supplemental material is NOT available to anyone who is NOT teaching in an accredited college...although the book could be taught to someone at the Junior and senior level of high school! In fact, I spent over 5 hours on the phone (being transferred from one department to another) before being told (on the website)that, although the supplemental material is available to home-schooling parents) that, in reality, it is NOT available!

If you are looking for an excellent book on horticulture, this is an excellent resource. If you are looking for an excellent textbook on the subject, it is also excellent. However, you must be prepared to go it on your own with the book as you will get NO HELP from Pearson's!

Amazon.com Review
Take Hal Bruce's advice and get a little wild in your garden. In How to Grow Wildflowers and Wild Shrubs and Trees in Your Own Garden, he describes where to find and how to grow wild things, both for their beauty and for the good of the planet. Bruce, who is definitely not a purist, reconciles the use of exotics and store-bought plants with native plants. He gives expert (and rare) instruction on how to cultivate uncommon native plants and what to plant in resistant or unusual areas, such as aquatic gardens or sandy spots. The appendix of sources for wild plants and the chart of planting zones will prove especially handy in your gardening adventures. One might question, though, Bruce's recommendations for propagating something called "Sneezeweed." ... Read more

Customer Reviews (3)

3-0 out of 5 stars 'Wildflowers' and 'Natives' are not synonymous
I have not read this entire book, but perused enough to have concerns - beginning with the cover. The flower pictured is Nigella damascena and it is NOT a North American native. Many people are confused about Wildflowers/Natives.They are not interchangeable words. Although the author does not use the term "native" in his title I see that other people reviewing this book are - adding to the confusion.Just my thoughts :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Less "how to..." than "how to appreciate and use..."
First point:This is a reprint of an excellent, early book (originally published in 1976) that should be read by all lovers of wild plants (in the field and in the garden).Second point:The title is somewhat misleading. This is NOT a primer on how to collect, propogate, cultivate and designwith native plants in the garden. While it is filled with interesting anduseful information on the plants it describes, those looking for pictorial,step-by-step, truly "how-to" information should consult otherreference books. It also focuses on plants found in the mid-Atlanticregions of the U.S., so readers in other areas may find even less usefulinformation for their own gardens.

All hint of misleading titles aside, however, this is a great book to read for one man's perspective onenvironmental destruction and salvation.Written by Mr. Bruce during atransition period in our environmentalist evolution - between theecology/flower child movements of the 1960s and early 70s (remember theclosed, green "E"?) and the rise of the prairie restoration,Nature Conservancy, rainforest protection, and other highly-organized,politically-correct movements of the 1980s and 90s - it is a plea forpeople to open their eyes to the beauty and potential loss of theenvironments that surround them.Using the changing seasons as hisbackdrop, Mr. Bruce takes us with him on a year-long, three-times-per-week,90-mile commute through the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia countrysidethat he refers to as "Delmarva".He tells us about the flora andfauna he sees on these drives, and then goes into great description oftheir attributes, their relationship to the environment, and the history oftheir development and distribution. He then shares idea for how theseplant materials can not only be preserved from destruction, but how theycan be best used in our own gardens, large and small.

Throughout, theauthor writes with a passionate, personal, engaging perspective on theseplants and the people that protect them, never hesitating to criticizeplant features he dislikes, but glowing in praise of their attributes andvalue. It is an enjoyable read, a four-season visit to a beautiful place, with an excellent traveling companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book About Native Plants for the Mid-Atlantic States
By far the best advice about growing wild trees, shrubs and flowers native to the eastern United States. For anyone who wants to naturalize woodland borders or ponds, streamsides and meadows, or who simply wants to growbeautiful native plants that are available from specialty nurseries but notoften found in neighborhood garden centers. The description of wild, fragrant native azaleas is unsurpassed.Because Hal Bruce's personalexperience was in gardens of the Mid-Atlantic states, his understanding ofplants and habitats is particularly useful for gardeners in the Atlanticcoastal plain. ... Product Description
High Plains Horticulture explores the significant, civilizing role that horticulture has played in the development of farmsteads and rural and urban communities on the High Plains portions of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, drawing on both the science and the application of science practiced since 1840.

Freeman explores early efforts to supplement native and imported foodstuffs, state and local encouragement to plant trees, the practice of horticulture at the Union Colony of Greeley, the pioneering activities of economic botanists Charles Bessey (in Nebraska) and Aven Nelson (in Wyoming), and the shift from food production to community beautification as the High Plains were permanently settled and became more urbanized.

In approaching the history of horticulture from the perspective of local and unofficial history, Freeman pays tribute to the tempered idealism, learned pragmatism, and perseverance of individuals from all walks of life seeking to create livable places out of the vast, seemingly inhospitable High Plains. He also suggests that, slowly but surely, those that inhabit them have been learning to adjust to the limits of that fragile land. High Plains Horticulture will appeal to not only scientists and professionals but also gardening enthusiasts interested in the history of their hobby on the High Plains. ... Read more

Among the plants featured are vast flowers, terrifying sculptural cacti, outlandish topiary and extraordinary bonsai: these gardens were planned and planted by true eccentrics, with surreal creativity and great humour. Subjects include huge bright orange Japanese maples, Jeff Koons' monumental "Puppy", a giant pumpkin, other-worldly cacti and "The Largest Fig Tree in the United States". Each photograph is accompanied by a detailed caption with information about the quirky gardens, the plants and their strange cultivation.
