Description:
This pilot project determines the potential for growing Cool Climate Grapes, high yield pasture and blue gum across Gippsland (Victoria, Australia), and the likely shift in that potential as projected climate change occurs in the region. It provides an indication of the information that can be generated combining Land Suitability Analysis and climate change scenarios. By considering the changing suitability of a few key agricultural enterprises in this region, the project offers an important direction for the agricultural elements of the Victorian Greenhouse Strategy. This pilot project utilises Land Suitability Analysis (LSA) developed by the former Victorian Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) under the National Land and Water Resources Audit of Australia and further enhanced with Local Government and Catchment Management Authorities across Victoria. This modelling technique allows for an assessment of impacts on a wide range of commodities beyond the historic focus of cropping and pasture models. Following a series of workshops with agronomists, soil scientists, climate scientists, strategic planners and growers, a series of maps/overlays were prepared for Gippsland showing potential suitability of blue gum plantations, Cool Climate Grapes and high yield pasture, as an initial illustration of the methodology. This potential suitability has since been adjusted/modified using a variety of climate change scenarios developed by CSIRO Climate Impacts Group, resulting in an assessment of the change in potential suitability for each enterprise at years 2020 and 2050. The resultant work can be analysed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to consider change over time and space in the region. Combined with changes in water availability, this may act as an innovative and powerful decision support tool for policy makers in government and industry. ... Read more

Product Description
This digital document is a journal article from Environmental Modelling and Software, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Environmental systems often involve phenomena that are continuous functions not only of time, but also of other independent variables, such as space coordinates. Typical examples are transportation phenomena of mass or energy, such as heat transmission and/or exchange, humidity diffusion or concentration distributions. These systems are intrinsically distributed parameter systems whose description usually requires the introduction of partial differential equations (PDE). Therefore, their modelling can be quite complex, both for what concerns the model construction and its identification. Indeed, a typical approach for the simulation of such systems is the use of finite elements techniques. However, this kind of description usually involves a huge number of parameters and requires time-consuming computations while not being suited for identification. For this reason, such models are generally not suitable for control purposes. In many cases, however, the involved phenomena depend on the independent (space) variables in a smooth way, and for fixed values of the independent variables, input-output relations can be satisfactorily represented by linear time-invariant models. In such conditions, a possible alternative to PDE consists in representing the physical system with a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) model whose parameters are functions of the independent variables. The advantage of this approach is the relatively simple model obtained, which is directly suitable for control purposes and can be easily identified from input-output data by means of classical techniques. Moreover, optimal identification schemes can be derived for such models, allowing the optimization of the number of measurements. This can be particularly useful in several environmental applications for which the cost of measurements represents a severe constraint. In this paper, the derivation of LPV models for the representation of distributed phenomena in environmental systems is discussed, and the issue of model uncertainty is addressed. In particular, it is shown that the derived models are linear in the parameters, and therefore classical methods for handling uncertainty are directly applicable. The proposed approach is illustrated by means of a simulated and a practical example concerning soil disinfestation by solarization. ... Read more

Product Description
This digital document is a journal article from Environmental Modelling and Software, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Classifiers that aim at doing credible predictions should rely on carefully elicited prior knowledge. Often this is not available so they should start learning from data in condition of near-ignorance. This paper shows empirically, on an agricultural data set, that established methods of classification do not always adhere to this principle. Traditional ways to represent prior ignorance are shown to have an overwhelming weight compared to the information in the data, producing overconfident predictions. This point is crucial for problems, such as environmental ones, where prior knowledge is often scarce and even the data may not be known precisely. Credal classification, and in particular the naive credal classifier, is proposed as more faithful ways to cope with the ignorance problem. With credal classification, conditions of ignorance may limit the power of the inferences, not the credibility of the predictions. ... Read more

This digital document is a journal article from Environmental Modelling and Software, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Models that implement the bio-physical components of agro-ecosystems are ideally suited for exploring sustainability issues in cropping systems. Sustainability may be represented as a number of objectives to be maximised or minimised. However, the full decision space of these objectives is usually very large and simplifications are necessary to safeguard computational feasibility. Different optimisation approaches have been proposed in the literature, usually based on mathematical programming techniques. Here, we present a search approach based on a multiobjective evaluation technique within an evolutionary algorithm (EA), linked to the APSIM cropping systems model. A simple case study addressing crop choice and sowing rules in North-East Australian cropping systems is used to illustrate the methodology. Sustainability of these systems is evaluated in terms of economic performance and resource use. Due to the limited size of this sample problem, the quality of the EA optimisation can be assessed by comparison to the full problem domain. Results demonstrate that the EA procedure, parameterised with generic parameters from the literature, converges to a useable solution set within a reasonable amount of time. Frontier ''peels'' or Pareto-optimal solutions as described by the multiobjective evaluation procedure provide useful information for discussion on trade-offs between conflicting objectives. ... Description:
The ecological status of Lake Pyhajarvi may be classified as moderate due to its elevated nutrient concentrations and algal biomass production. Therefore, the Eurajoki river basin, including Lake Pyhajarvi, has been chosen as the Finnish test catchment in an EU project on benchmarking models for the Water Framework Directive. One aim of the project is to test the suitability of models for the assessment of management options proposed to meet the surface water quality targets. The catchment model SWAT is currently being tested for its applicability for analysing the effectiveness of proposed measures to reduce agricultural and sparse settlement nutrient loading. The model is being applied to the river Ylaneenjoki catchment draining to Lake Pyhajarvi. First results indicate that SWAT can be calibrated for flow and sediment yield using catchment scale parameters. For nutrients, however, parameters describing more detailed catchment processes have to be calibrated. The preliminary essay on measures such as buffer strips indicate that SWAT includes relevant management options that affect nutrient leaching. However, the descriptions of these management options require some modifications in order to describe correctly the reduction efficiency in local conditions. ... Read more
