A study commissioned by the French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development failed to come up with a satisfactory answer but found other benefits in soil carbon sequestration. The study by the French Agricultural Research Institute (INRA) found that while farm soil shows good potential to store carbon, its overall value as a sink for carbon emissions is not as significant when it comes to meeting Kyoto Protocol reduction targets. In terms of environmental benefits, says INRA, soil carbon sequestration should be evaluated according to its combined effects of abating greenhouse gas warming and improving the quality and sustainability of agricultural soil. Organic carbon can be stored for relatively long periods in soil, and represents a significant fraction of the planets total carbon. Some 1500 billion tonnes is estimated to be bound globally to soil - twice the amount present in the atmosphere. France could potentially store three million tonnes of carbon a year over a 20-year period in its soils, equivalent to 2% of the countrys greenhouse gas emissions, says INRA. But this would require massive changes in the way soil was managed, with longer periods of commitment by farmers to growing specific types of vegetation. In turn this would bring other benefits, such as reducing erosion and improving the quality of soils, says INRA.

Principal Objective of Agriculture - The principal objectives of modern agriculture are to cultivate the soil for increasing crop yields while protecting the land from erosion or misuse. An important requirement for nations is a periodic agricultural census and inventory. Such information permits the monitoring of current production and the prediction of crop yields, so that serious food shortages or distribution problems can be recognized in time and corrective action can be taken. B. Role of Remote Sensing - Because of the size, remoteness, diversity, variability, and vulnerability of the worlds crops, accurate information on production during and following the crop season is limited. Conventional, medium-scale aerial photographs have been used for decades in some regions for identification of major crops and monitoring of crop-area allotments. Such surveys also permit the identification of land characteristics, such as major soil types, drainage, and topographical relief patterns, as a basis for evaluating the best potential use of the land. The following applications have been made: Assessment of potentially arable lands Classification of agricultural lands Identification and distribution of crops cultivated Crop areas and predicted crop yields Periodic changes in crops or farming patterns Detection of crop damage Evaluation of plant diseases and plant vigor Surveys and mapping of agricultural soils Analysis of terrain and soil-forming processes

Their characteristics as well as their association with archaeological material strongly suggest a human origin.
