Droughts, winds and flooding rains have ripped away tonnes of soil; a general lack of native vegetation has left solitary trees more prone to pests and diseases, a phenomenon known as dieback. In many places the lack of suitable native vegetation has allowed rising water tables to bring salt to the surface. Replacement of local flora with crops and pasture has disrupted countless foodchains, causing an imbalance that heavily favours agricultural pests and disease organisms. Recognising that there are problems is the first step towards finding solutions. This conference is intended to facilitate the recognition of problems, and to highlight the application of possible solutions. Speakers include:

Extractions: References The concept of global change is now well understood and to a large extent accepted amongst scientists, agencies and the informed public. It is usually also accepted that the driving forces for changes are: (i) change in atmospheric composition; (ii) climate change (which arises from the first); and (iii) land-use change (driven by both socio-economic factors and by climate change). A number of associated topics, such as ozone/UV-B, acid rain and other forms of pollution are sometimes included, but are not central to the discussion in this paper. Of these factors, change in atmospheric composition is well documented, and a reasonably good prediction of its future progress can be given. Climate change may be occurring, but it is still possible that what is being observed is a normal fluctuation (IPCC, 1992). Land-use change cannot yet, therefore, be associated with climate change in the global sense, but it is occurring very rapidly because of socio-economic driving forces.

Around the river, the alluvial soils, heavier and richer, produce the Vins de Pays, and the single-varietal wines. On the slopes, home of the appellations, the soil is poorer. Formed of river-rolled rocks or sand, these lands have always been planted in vineyards. The vines grown on the "bancels" (terraces stepped up against the hills) are protected from the cold brought by the northerly winds, and receive maximal sunshine. The poor soil offers a low yield but the fewer grapes fill with sun and develop fully their aromatic powers.

N is lost from wet soils through two main processes Denitrification into the atmosphere especially on saturated clay loam and clay soils The loss applies only to nitrate-N in wet soils. N in the ammonium or organic form is not directly affected but can be affected after it is converted to nitrate. Nitrate leaching during heavy rains or snow melt, in depressional areas of landscape and in sandy soils due to poor capacity to hold water and the ease of water infiltration and movement in sandy soils (see Table 1) Table 1. By training Youth Apprentices, agriculture employers can play an active role in shaping the quality of their future workforce, improving the skill level of potential workers, and enhancing their competitive positioning in the marketplace. This program provides a framework for educators and industry to work together to produce work-ready, entry-level employees whose efficiency, productivity and flexibility will compete favorably in the global market while integrating academic and work-based learning in school and the workplace. Youth Apprenticeship is a rigorous two-year elective program that combines academic and technical classroom instruction with mentored on-the-job paid training for high school students. The Production Agriculture Youth Apprenticeship is a unique program which combines two successful work experience programs - Cooperative Education Skill Certificate Program (Co-op) and Youth Apprenticeship. Level One - Cooperative Education Skill Certificate Program During the first year of the program students will complete the Cooperative Education Skill Certificate program in Agribusiness. Students can focus on Agribusiness Plant Science or Agribusiness Animal Science. Students receive classroom instruction that supports their work experience, which is taught by a certified agriculture education instructor.
