Extractions: home Of the 50 000 known mammalian and bird species about 30 have been used extensively for agriculture, and only 15 species account for over 90 per cent of global livestock production. Over the past 15 years, 300 out of the 6000 breeds identified by FAO have become extinct. There are currently 1350 breeds faced with extinction with an average of 2 breeds being lost every week. Genetic resources are among the most valuable and strategically important assets that a country holds. Many countries have indigenous animal species and breeds that could potentially contribute far more to food and agriculture production than they are currently contributing and meet much wider human needs. These indigenous animal species are often better genetically adapted to their environment and so are more productive at lower costs. They remain productive whilst consuming lower quality feed stuffs, are more resilient to climatic stress, are more resistant to local parasites and diseases and are a unique source of genes for improving health and performance of industrial breeds. Extractions: By George Grow This is the VOA Special English AGRICULTURE REPORT. Recent studies show bacteria that are resistant to antibiotic drugs are common in meat in the United States. The bacteria can survive in the human body. Some bacteria also may cause drug-resistant infections in people. For years, American farmers have given antibiotics to the animals they raise for food. The drugs are used to prevent infections and increase the size of the animals. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that more than nine-million kilograms of antibiotics are given to animals each year. The group says less than ten percent of that total are used to treat active infections. The Animal Health Institute represents companies that make drugs for animals. The group says antibiotics help keep animals healthy. However, bacteria living in the animals can become resistant to antibiotics. Scientists suspect that people may be getting antibiotic-resistant bacteria from the food they eat. In Nineteen-Ninety-Eight, the European Union barred the use of antibiotics in farm animals. Some groups support the idea of a similar ban in the United States.

Stress is a physical condition that results from real or expected problems. People may experience stress when they lose a job or feel threatened. Common signs include increased heart rate, higher blood pressure and muscle tension. American agriculture experts say farm animals also may experience stress. Animals may experience stress after giving birth or for other reasons. They say stress may affect meat quality, milk production and the health of farm animals. Experts say stress in animals is more difficult to identify. Farmers can look for signs such as lower than expected body weight and increased risk of disease. Ted Elsasser is a scientist at the United States Agricultural Research Service. He is studying a possible sign of stress in animals. He says changed proteins called nitrated proteins may serve as an early warning system for the problem. Currently, farmers use antibiotics to treat stress in animals. However, repeated use of use antibiotics can lead to bacteria that resist the drugs.

Extractions: Sustainable agricultural systems involve animals for their unique ability to use noncompetitive, nonrenewable resources, and for their integration with other farm practices. They complement plant production systems, and provide biological and economic diversity. Management of such mixed or integrated systems is the greatest challenge. Forages are grown on over half the land area of the United States. The economic success of forage farming requires animal grazing. Nutrient cycling, soil-water conservation, and enterprise flexibility are also affected. Animal reproductive cycles are timed to seasonal availability of forage, and differences among species (nutrient requirements, behavior, and diet preferences) allow the efficient use of resources in both biological and economic terms. Controlled intensive grazing, made possible by technological advances in electrified fencing, has improved the economic and biological output of animal-forage farming. Sustainable cropping systems often emphasize the use of nitrogen-fixing legumes for their value in soil improvement and as cover crops. Increased production of these legumes, which improve animal performance, should enhance the role of animals in these resource-conserving systems. Animals can also use other crop residues, which are currently produced in the United States in excess of amounts needed to prevent serious soil erosion. Returning animal feces and urine to the soil can help cycle nutrients, and animal grazing can help control weeds in agroforestry or pasture systems. For example, sheep can effectively control leafy spurge, a serious pest in the north central United States and Canada which is toxic to cattle.
